This isn't an uncommon issue, I don't believe there's a fix =/

PC

Issue: PC users experience a "General protection fault" error
Frequency: Low
Status: This issue is being investigated

I dunno if this would help, but try "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" --- (Properties after right clicking on Borderlands, then go to Local Files tab)

Also defrag.

I'm not sure though, I haven't had this issue. I do notice, when it crashes (only when I alt tab) that I get a similiar error, BUT it does actually list files in place of your 'filename not found')

Set the CPU affinity to CPU 0 only.

This is done via the Task Manager window by R-Clicking on the Borderlands.exe process, and must be done before the game loads completely.

I personally, feel like this is a computer resource issue.

Might be a memory leak issue...as i have a pretty robust system and have only gotten a GPF error ONCE after a very, very long play session.

What are your computer specs?

Taskmanager Set Affinity(limit game to one CPU):

XP
Minimise borderlands when you have started it up
CTRL+ALT+DEL
Go to the Processes Tab
Go through the list & Right click on borderlands.exe
Set Affinity
Untick "All Processors"
Select CPU 1 only

Vista/Windows 7
Minimise borderlands when you have started it up
CTRL+ALT+DEL
Click Start Task Manager
Go to the Processes Tab
Go through the list & Right click on borderlands.exe
Set Affinity
Untick "All Processors"
Select CPU 1 only

Darkravenbw:

mine still crashes if I select CPU 1. I have to select CPU 0 to make the error go away.

So Lucky, be sure to try it both ways if you still get the crash.

whichever CPU really it shouldnt matter... i have an option of 16 on the server i run and it doesn't seem to be picky when i limit a process to 1/2 cores only.

Yeah, I'm just mentioning it so Lucky knows to try both ways if CPU 1 doesn't work.

are you setting the CPU affinity before the splash screen goes away? A lot of people have said that you have to set the affinity before the game fully loads to avoid the crash.

anyone found a solution to this problem? Luckily i got this game at ~10€. Still seeing how unstable it is i can't really say im happy with this game. Never going to buy anything +$15 that has this studios name on it.

Guys...i tried almost everything...newer drivers, i tried that CPU thing, i looked an all forums including 2K and Steam, asked for support on steam. Answer? nothing. Asked for support on 2K answer? yes...but this is not all...after 2 weeks, they answered with "we need msconfig and dxdiag..." ok...i gave them AND after 2 weeks...reply: case closed. Are you satisfied.....? I really don't need to say more...i really don't know what to do. love the game, it's catchy...but this insane ....stuff...is killing all 2K's fans...and they will think twice before buying borderlands 2...(sorry for typos).

^^ This is just a nature of PC gaming, if you have a gaming config that is different in some way, you can encounter problems developers didn't find during development.

The question you need to ask is how clean is your system? And how close is it to the typical\good gaming system? Example, if you got a inexpensive laptop and lots software installed, then you're likely to encounter a lot problems with games. If you have only installed games on a new\clean system that meets\exceeds game requirements, you're less likely to encounter problems.

PC gamers learn how to deal with problems and become good at solving them, even if in a perfect world PC games never have problems. One reason there are million of console gamers is because console games "Just work" and have very little crashing problems compared to PC games, thus some gamers prefer console games because there are less problems. If a gamer wants to play PCs games, they have accept that their config is going encounter problems, and they need to take some level responsibility for the fact if they want use the system for more than gaming, then they increase the risk of having crashing problem.
