View Full Version : [MW2] SP slows down every 5-10 seconds
Raigen

Sometimes in SP and Co-op, my game slows down like hell. I can run the game with highest settings and 4xAA or with everything on low and no AA, I still get this "lags" every 5-10 seconds. It's like a drop from ~60-90FPS to ~3-5FPS and back. Really annoying and unplayable.
On MP, I'm running everything on max. settings and 2x AA with no problem, on every map with 12-18 players.
My hardware:
------
OS: Win7 Ultimate x64
PSU: BeQuiet! Straight Power ~450W
CPU: Intel Core² Duo E8200 ~3,2Ghz
MB: MSI P35 Neo-Combo F
RAM: GeIL DDR2 800 ~2GB
GPU: XFX GeForce 8800 GTS 512 Alpha Dog Edition
------
All drivers are updated to the newest version.
Does somebody may know what the problem could be and how I could solve it?

Windows key + R. Type in msconfig.
Go to the Services tab at the top. Check the option "Hide All Microsoft Services" then click Disable All.
Click the Startup tab and then Disable All.
Restart your PC, run the game and see if it still lags.

I think I am having a very similar problem. This especially happens in SP. I will be playing, and it will run fine for a while, then it will slow down tremendously. Other times it will almost grind to a halt, with less than 10 FPS for sure.
Multiplayer is better, but I still have some FPS issues.
Call of Duty 4 never had this problem.
Windows 7 x86 (Clean install, practically no unneeded services and startup programs running etc.)
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz
BFG GeForce 9800 GT OC 512MB
Corsair XMS2 4GB DDR-800
I am running the current NVidia beta drivers. I am going to try downgrading to see if it helps the situation.

I have similar issues in SP. It seems like it only happens in certain areas of a level, like it's trying to load more data, but it's definitely not every 5-10 seconds for me, more like 5-10 minutes. It doesn't really interfere with gameplay most of the time, and it's more of an outright freeze than a slowdown. It's REALLY bad in the museum level you get after beating the game that shows up when you watch the credits. Every time the camera moves to look at a differently-themed area it freezes for a few seconds. This never happens in MP.

This happens to me every 5-10 minutes like you described, but on top of that I maintain a very low FPS most of the time. Both of those together makes the game nearly unplayable at times.

Same here:
2.6 Ghz Phenom II Quad
ATI 4870
4 gb ram
win 7 64 bit
All settings max with 4xaa at 1680x1050 resolution. It doens't lag every 5-10 seconds but when I got a little later in the campaign (Forgot what its called atm it starts with fev I think) at random points I keep getting insane lag like everything just stoped for a second or 2 and its really annoying. Plays smooth as hell when its not doing it. Only happens in SP too.

Alright, I tried turning off themes and whatnot in compatibility mode, and changed the specular map setting, but the problem is still there in the museum level. The changes seem to have made the stuttering/freezing a bit less obvious though, but that's probably placebo effect in action.

I'm getting this problem as well. It runs very smooth, but when I make a transition (turn a corner, come out of scope, enter the precision strike view, etc) the game downright freezes for as long as 3-4 seconds, which makes me sitting there completely exposed (and wastes a missile on nothing).
Multiplayer is not as bad as single player (for example that museum thing post-credits that was mentioned earlier makes my computer freeze like NO OTHER)
Help please!

Uninstall all current Nvidia drivers you have and download ones from the official source, reboot, then install.

Also might think about getting a higher power PSU and more Ram, 450 watts/2gigs is a bit low.

Already tried this, I have exactly the same problem as the OP. But it happens more like every 5 minutes and in certain parts of the map in Single Player.

Think it might have something to do with texture streaming? I usually get frame drops for 5-10 seconds while entering new areas.

I'm having the same problem described where it works smooth at first but eventually it grinds to a halt.
interesting thing is i checked the fps with fraps and the fps isn't actually dropping, it's getting stuttering from elsewhere i believe. fps sticks at near constant 50-60 fps peaking up to 150 or so.
i literally have tried everything short of reinstalling windows but i'm not far from attempting that. i've updated all my drivers. i've even tried rolling back drivers. all them clean installs with driver sweeper.
checked the temperatures and they're not outrageous. i've even tried redownloading the game. tried all different arrays of graphics settings all to no avail.
enabling/disable ati ai or adaptive aliasing does nothing.
i'm at my wits end quite frankly, i don't know what else to try.

It seems like there's nothing we can do. We're stuck with a broken game. Clearly this isn't a hardware problem.

I believe the stutter in performance is coming from our processors being pegged to 100% without reason. It even happens to me on the MP Menu screens where my mouse will skip along the screen for half a second.
My Specs: Vista 64, Q6600 2.4ghz Quad Core, 6 gigs Ram, GTX 260, 1000w PSU - My temps are good
I think it might have to do with the game not being optimized to take advantage of multi core processors and it's causing the performance to be bottle necked. I OC'd my processor to 3ghz and still had the same issues.
I have tried every logical troubleshooting method at this point and it is getting old... not sure how long I am willing to wait around for a developer fix.

When the game is running, CTRL+ALT+DEL and select the game in the processes list. Then set it to affinity and have only 1 processor checked. Then go back in game and see if this fixes it. It has nothing to do with multi core processing if this doesn't fix it.

So I have found a temporary solution:
The problem with the CPU Load is that it is falling behind the GPU and bottlenecking performance so I lowered the MAXFPS settings to try and stop the GPU from getting ahead of the CPU and it has cut down on my slow downs in MP. I think different systems will have to find different MAX FPS settings but for me I lowered it from the default 85 to 50.
Go to *:\Program Files\Valve\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\players\config_mp.cfg
Create a backup of this file first.
and then search for seta com_maxfps "85"
Replace the "85" with "50" and then Save File.
After Save, Right Click File and Select - Properties and tick the "Read Only" box and then apply it.
Like I said people will have to find the happy medium of how high they can set the FPS with still stopping the in game choppiness.
Let me know if this helps you!

don't think the problem is the cpu getting pegged to 100% as i checked it when i was checking my temps (speedfan) and it was usually hovering around 75% max load on cpu.

Ditto same issue here... My CPU is not even close to being totally pegged(I use Everest on my G15 display so I can always see whats going on) there is nothing(GPU,CPU,RAM usage) even close to being at 100%. Some levels are fine the next time its its back to the stutter...
I just had to quit playing a few minutes ago as it was starting to drive me mental.
It's hard enough staying alive on Veteran without this...

I am also experiencing bad performance issues.
1. My game will stutter for a few seconds right at the main menu.
2. Can't alt-tab from the game in a timely fashion, seems to peg the cpu to 100%
3. Really bad slowdown when entering a new scene in a sp/mp map. Believe this to be caused by the new 'Texture Streaming' engine, requiring files to be pulled from the HDD while looking into a new area. Turning down your texture resolution settings will improve this but wheres the fun in that?
4. In sp and mp if I am near a grenade (close enough to take damage, or in range for damange by any explosion) the explosion sends my sceen into a scanline frenzy, which produces graphical lag. I have to look at the sky until everything calms down then continue. I though it was the gfx card overheating mabey but this problem is only triggered by explosions and flashbangs.
My specs are in simplest form:
AMD Socket Athlon 64 X2 6000+ dual core running at 3.2GHz
2GB DDR2 Corsair (Running dual channal so 4GB)
XFX 250 GTS (Newest Drivers)
I run the game on full graphics at 1280x1024 with no AA.
Just a quick note, i have the electronic version from steam of cource and when i bought the game i had used about 220GB of my 250gb HDD, i fiqured that was where the butt hurt was coming from but i was wrong, i reformatted and I'm now running it with a 28.4GB out of 247gb and its not really helping.
I need help :( it's destroying my soul for this game.
The FPS config change did not help.

It's the 2GB memory for sure.
I recall that when I had to send back 2GB of my memory to get it RMA'd (then I was left with 2, originally had 4), I got those stutters in CoD4.

I'm not sure about that one, COD4 runs a dream currently. Full gfx 4x AA full AF solid 125fps (locked at). Completely diffrent story with MW2, i expected it to be heavier but this ain't right there no way COD4 is running that great and MW2 is running like that because of my memory.

It's basically to do with video memory and shifting around textures on the fly for complicated maps, the short answer is to turn down graphics settings, e.g. specular, texture detail and so on.

That specular settings ♥♥♥♥ didn't work on my pc. Only that "maxfps" stuff worked but i had to reduce it to '25' to be able to play but i don't really want to ruin my gaming experience on that ♥♥♥♥ty fps rate.
My configuration is, basically:
CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
RAM: OCZ 3.0 GB DDR3
OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (Build Service Pack 32600)
VGA: ATI Radeon HD4890 1GB
I don't think it could be something about the configuration, or could it?
And I might add that my problem is not literally a 'freeze' in the game. For example in the first mission in the brazil where we get to catch Rojas, the game just goes in a bullet-time mode. There's no drop at fps or whatnot but the game runs like I'm playing in a constant slow-motion setting turned on. It doesn't happen randomly, it happens when I'm looking at more like far, open areas like the jesus sculpture up the mountain, canyons and things like that.

Hey I'm running an 8800GT with 512MB of RAM I had a similar problem to this. It has NOTHING to do with the graphics card. I can run everything maxed out at 4xFSAA. My desktop has 5GB of RAM and I will tell you what will be the likely cause.
At times when I played SP my hard drive would shoot up in activity for a bit then everything would resume back to normal. Then I found out two things when I looked at taskmanager while the game was running.
MW2 was eating up 1.5GB of RAM and Firefox was eating up 1GB of RAM and the total RAM usage was around 3.5GB with 1.5 reserved for caching. Why didn't Vista use all the RAM? is beyond me. All I knew was once I killed Firefox, no more stuttering at times in SP.
What you might be potentially experiencing is "thrashing"... i.e. you don't have enough RAM so Windows keeps swapping things from the hard drive onto the memory.
Now imagine this. If MW2 eats up 1.5GB of RAM in a 5GB system, then it's definitely needing moar memory from your system which only has 2GB. I'm willing to bet that Windows gives your MW2 copy around 1GB usage and have the rest cached onto the hard drive so what you experience is most likely thrashing.
Ahhh yes, the good ol days when we thought 2GB was enough... not anymore it seems :(
To test this out, just pay attention to your HDD activity light. When it pauses for a second look at your activity light. If it's a solid on then you know what the solution is: moar RAM!
Even if this isn't the case it's most likely not the graphics card. My Mobility Radeon X600 only had 64MB of RAM and I had a stuttering problem in the case that it would run at 60 and then there would be essentially a skip, go at 60, skip, etc. If that happens then it's most likely a lack of video RAM issue.
Another theory is that... some textures are stored onto the RAM and what your HDD is doing is swapping texture data that it doesn't need with texture data that it needs... which requires main memory to do. Yes, some texture data is stored in the memory from my knowledge even when your graphics card has plenty of memory to play with so that could also be the case.

ok so I've been havin same sort of problem....
I have a comp that can totaly run the game fine i even see moments that the game runs fine. I just bought the game maybe a week now. all week every single room i enter i have one red bar. i had hacked when everyone was (game release) but just to play bleh but it worked perfect no problems at all. now i get this lag constantly once i buy the game!!!!!
so can see capable
AMD phenom 9500 quad core 4ghz 3.25gig ram 8500gt
my room is 100 degrees always has been never has effected play comp would shut down before that n have moved it to cold room blah blah i've installed graphics over and over directx over and over but I had noticed this started way before I even downloaded steam again and bought mw2... I was playing battlefield heros and it would just lag for no reason.... I've gone through whole comp shy of format now... done virus spyware even have the game thing to shut off all the other processess but this is no matter I do graphic design and I run 50 programs full 3d creation programs and then the game as well would run fine with all this open... now i get one red ping every room sometimes 2 yellow on the 4 bar system i get 1 bar as well at the 10 bar system
so leaning toward a fix...
I've noticed that if i delete the mp config and then click play game it will give me those few min of pristine play... after first death or 2 then lags to hell... so i'm thinking something in the config is causing the problem that leads me to think its got to be this patch... I also noticed no matter what i change the config to even if i make it read only the settings revert with in a game or 2.. if not 1 game... only seems to stay when i use this mw2 config ap i downloaded that lets u turn off more in the game than u can normally...(still lags all turned down)
but anyhow so i'd say every 5 times or so of deleting the config file it will give me that moment of pristine play.. I dont even get game load lag its like its reversed all that works fine (if its not lagging right away) loads up even waiting for others ticks away plays till what seems to be getting near the enemy. Once i see a red name boom lag hits and will last through every game, like lagged the game it self nothing to do with latency. carries over to new servers and through reopening the game..
I have changed from one processor to 4 to 3 to 2 all diff afinity changed computer graphics settings turned off services killed rocesses but this is all no matter cause would play the game fine before at any resolution had damn thing at 2000+ resolution across 2 screens with all my other stuff open drawing on the comp so i know its not the comp pretty much and has something to do with the game files them selves cause like i said I get great intro to a game once i deleted the mp config and click play without it.. also have gotten it to give me those moments with config in tact at many diff res...( wierd thing it does this as well even if i get a room with full bars get a few min n the lag hits yet again... and notice everyone running around fine in most games only call lag they say there fine...
have moved the game and steam to different drives on comp...
had bad virus problems recovered hd inbetween cleaned all up and fresh installs makes no sence what so ever... was getting hacked for a project was working on almost lost everything became really profficient in removing malware and such so i know its clean....
wondering if all of this is a new hack or that the people running there hacks are mudding up the water so to speak takin away from the game on a latency thing lagging the rest of the room cause there hack is pinging all the chars over and over...
seen it in other games... CS use to do that...
wondering if maybe there's some lil registy entry or something from goin in these servers thats cuttin the game up i've had trouble like this before and deleted one registry entry and boom worked again....
I've even gone to the point to download program to see whats eatin bandwith and it doesnt show anything else taking up speed I did notice that the game will go into the 10-20k + upload download then lower back down but think thats the game load lag
heh i mean the game worked better when downloaded for free n used zero gear... (no i dont hack aim wall what ever, in game) moment i come back months later and buy the game get this crap...
I would suggest deleting the mp config and trying to play I used both ways cash and just hitting play and the file reappears have even deleted it mid game tho when i do delete it and watch the folder the lag looks like it hits when that config file is remade in the folder... at the same time i can delete iit and get no effect still lags (mid game delete does nothing) think the file is only referenced once
so now ive been around the block once already trying everything and this is what i've gathered from the experience.... later today i'm goin to another computer at another house to download everything and see if its the same... but all in all game worked great month or 3 ago that mw2 free play wekend... playing battlefield heros lag started.. use to play fine stoppeed playing because of it got mw2 and get the same type of lag.. thought java creating something deleted reinstalled even tried game before reinstalled nothing... and yes battlefield heros still lags as well
my comp could run mw2 2X over no lag before.. I always take it to those extremes I mean i even use to try n play mw2 on vnc with my iphone and it worked fine..(no good direction control input in the iphone aps but can mouse look lie normal) also use the iphone as a game pad for the game worked fine as well...if they ever make a vnc that can use the iphones tilt its on be playin mw2 mirrored from iphone lmao!
its got to be this patch!!!!!!!!!!
or something in the registry
sidebar
i would just leave server running if ever get this going hoping to find automated server ap for for when not home so can leave it without being here err anyhow change it evey so often from my iphone... bleh mw2 <3
but somethin not right with this patch or registry or config_mp...
steam descide to lag everyone that used zero gear??? or what lol lmao idk just no reason for it but the game files... single player as well as mp does this

I had a sort of same incident, my problem was overheating of my videocards.. I blew out the dust and that fixed it for me btw i am running dual 8800gtx ultra in SLI with 8 GB RAM and a Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850. And as mentioned in earlier posts check if you have enough power from your PSU there are a bunch of sites where you can check your system.
P.S. sorry for my bad english :D

My hardware:
------
OS: Win7 Ultimate x64
PSU: antec true power quatro ~850w
CPU: Intel Core² Quad q9550 ~3.72Ghz
MB: EVGA 780i
RAM: Mushkin 1066 ddr2 2 x 2gb
GPU: BFG 9800 gt
------
All drivers are updated to the newest version.
By default the page file is setup to be the 1 x the amount of ram installed. By changing the minimum and the maximun to 1.5 times the amount of ram installed my game has quit stuttering and freezing up. It was pretty bad for some reason. i even thought maybe i was getting hacked by someone. but upon applying the changes problem resolved so far.
Click to open System.
In the left pane, click Advanced system settings. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
On the Advanced tab, under Performance, click Settings.
Click the Advanced tab, and then, under Virtual memory, click Change.
Clear the Automatically manage paging file size for all drives check box.
Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
Click Custom size, type a new size in megabytes in the Initial size (MB) or Maximum size (MB) box, click Set, and then click OK.

page file sounds like a worthy culprit gona mess with the setting see if it works can't find no reason for this lag can see that its more than a server lag tho

tuns of space... lookin on google think fan isn't changable dont think its a heat prob for every time i leave n come back would get at least a sec of no lag but that dont happen lol like now after the cool night im freezing in here still get the lag game worked perfect when it was 100* in here anyhow... I never had to mess with anything.... battlefield heros started to lag n guess been here since then... I did notice app failure last night bonjure service for itunes but think was on restarts... just ran trend micros house call and it found garbled files i had it fix them just ran heros seemed ok punk buster kept kickin me so idk if was load lag i was seeing but was way way way less gona try mw2 now

ok so trend micro house call found 12 files that were garbled... i had it fix them... i went back to mw2 and did the cashe and it said 6 fiels were missing... so i ran it again and it put the files back.... now i can get full ping in games but now i cant move keeps jumping back to where i was over and over then stop input and game moves on its own... still had rooms with 1 red bar as well but the lag has changed form from just a slow down to now warping so must be on the right track with its the game files them selves... I'm not sure the 12 files that house call fixed (names) but it has taken away all mouse lag so its got to be server lag now only... not sure... I have only installed the graphics card havent messed with quality/performace but about to see if that will make it playable..
maybe in the download of the game those files got garbled and now using the cashe to replace you get the good file... more testing needed gona try diff card settings

yup turning the card to performance increased the quality yet still gettin stuck in place rubberbanding back to where i was warping so gona reinstall the card from the disk drivers cause they have so far always gave me best effect the new drivers just suck nvidia 8500 gt I been having full green pings depending on server n still getting this lag so what ever trend micro house call did its helped

thats a good program got it a while ago(game booster).... somehow i net limiter 3'ed mw2 lololol i removed the limiter on it...(think was tryin to make it lag more to see if was just lag or comp problem) still having the lag yet i'm finding more rooms with full green or 2 yellow but still lags doesnt get that precision play i was getting before... gona see if game booster will fix this last lil bit o lag...

so I figured out SSDP was pinging away like crazy turned off the service netlimiter 3 helped me to realize by the unrelated up and down it was showing so googled it to find out was SSDP
further that made the game so pristine yet half way through a round lag would hit again and still showing up/down from the router so i'm thinking its a heat issue now cause if i let the comp sit for a min it goes pristine again lol....
but then again not sure if thats the cause it was freezing in here last night and still was doing this... so now in a few min when i try to play it should lag right off the bat cause its litterally 100* in here atm...
but kill SSDP service took all the lag away to find new lag(heat i think) try out netlimiter 3 pretty nice to see ups/downs goin on behind the sceens
will post if its heat....
