Required Ports for Modern Warfare 2
In addition to the required ports for Steam, Modern Warfare 2 requires the following ports for multiplayer:
UDP 1500 (outbound)
UDP 3005 (outbound)
UDP 3101 (outbound)
UDP 28960
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=3991-EOAV-1596
Are the ports at the right places? (Like Filter and not applications (or is that the other way around))

-----------
I got it too work by enabling UpNp in my router/modem along with opening the right ports and then turning off my software firewall on your OS (once you have OPEN NAT in game you can experiment with turning on your firewall.
note: EVEN WHEN YOU ASSIGN FULL ACCESS TO A PROGRAM IN YOUR SOFTWARE FIREWALL MOST OF THEM WILL STILL NOT WORK WITH IW.NET SAME GOES FOR GTAIV AND/OR WINDOWSLIVE FOR THAT MATTER.
I got OPEN NAT in game in combination with a zonealarm firewall with medium security on... but even that sometimes fails and i have to turn the firewall on and off.

Is XP able to detect your router?
There's a component (Under Add/Remove Programs, Components, Network [Something or other] (details) that helps XP find and ask for UPnP ports.
GFWL failed UPnP tests until that component was installed.

Did you close the program then start the game? The program may be using that port if it's still running.
Disable your windows firewall and any other firewall. If there's still an issue do the following:
Start > Run > msconfig
Services > Check option "Hide all Microsoft Services" > Click Disable All
Startup > Click Disable All
Restart and then try playing the game

Good question,
How do I know if XP detects the router?
In the router login it finds my computor.
And the portchecker says ports are opened to my IP adress.
So, its detected right?

If you have the component up and running, going to "Network Places" should show your router if discovery is turned on by the router. (Don't ask me how, I have no idea what the interface is for yours, it's partially why I suggest Tomato on Linksys routers.)

Windows XP does not detect Upnp devices by default. This means, even if your router is set to support Upnp, Windows will not configure it's ports.
To enable UpnP, do the following: Control panel>Add Remove programs>Add Windows components>Highlight Networking Services and click Details. Install the Upnp user interface and restart your pc.
Before that I would recommend to reset your router to its default settings like Nat on, UpnP on...
If all goes well, all relevant ports should be configured automatically, and although your Nat type will come up as Strict on IWnet you shouldn't have any problem connecting.
BTW, people have been talking about how dangerous it is to use Upnp. If your pc is clean and not already compromised there's no danger. Configuring a router via Upnp does not make you more vulnerable to attack.

No advantages as far as I am aware. As far as MW2 is concerned, I have ignored the in my opinion wreckless advice of IW how to configure the router. Opening ports manually, disabling firewalls, even putting the pc into a DMZ is just asking for trouble, especially when people aren't excactly sure what they are doing.

this seems to be a problem for many more people. Did you follow my advice and undo all the manual changes you made to the router and just leave it to Upnp to configure everything? If you can't remember all the changes you made consider a hard reset in order to get everything to defaults. Then make sure that Nat and Upnp are checked and then see if you for example can communicate via Messenger or some other messaging program. If you can without manually opening ports Upnp is working.

You cannot change the Nat type in MW2. you can use your web browser to connect to your router's setup pages. Type your router's IP address into your browser's address bar and hit enter. The address is likely to be 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.0 - if it isn't, click Start>Run>type cmd and hit enter. At the command prompt type> ipconfig/all and hit enter.
This will show you amongst other things the default gateway address: This is your router's ip.
Once you are on the router's setup pages, undo all the changes you have made sofar, which means everything should be at default settings. Then make sure that Upnp and also Network Address Translation (NAT)on the router are enabled. Don't forget to save the changes you made, and after that reboot the router.
If you made any changes to the Windows Firewall, undo these as well. Upnp will configure the firewall for you. Let me know how you are getting on and good luck..

Try going one step beyond turning off the Windows Firewall. Disable the service.
Hit Windows Key + R for a Run Dialog, type in 'cmd' without quotes.
on the Command prompt window, (you'll need admin for this) type the following:
net stop "Windows Firewall/Internet Connection Sharing (ICS)"
Make sure you use the quotes in that one. I've found that often times even though the firewall is disabled, it can still have an effect on your system. If that doesn't solve the problem, change stop to 'start' and re-enable it. Let me know how that works out for you.

I got answer from Activision that steam needs more ports open.
How to open port range, exampel 27000-27015
On this router Thomson TG787
This is the manual from portforwarding,
http://www.portforward.com/english/routers/port_forwarding/Thomson-Alcatel/TG787/default.htm
Use the Protocol drop down box to select the protocol type of the ports you are forwarding. If you are forwarding a single port, enter that port number into the Translate To, Top Port Range and the Bottom Port Range boxes. If you are forwarding a range of ports, enter the lowest number of that range into the Translate To, Top Port Range box. Then enter the highest number of that range into the Bottom Port Range box. When you are finished, click the Add button.
Click the Apply button near the top of the page.
Click Apply is not correct. But thats not the problem.
I can add singel ports, but not a port range.
Upper small box(port range) - 27000
Lower small box(port range) - 27015
Long box (translate to) - 27000
This is not correct. So, anyone knows how to open port range?
The manual is not correct, and the interface on this router model is bad.
I will report if this solves the problem and what ports I opened.

Hello.
It seems you have many of the ports open already, but there are larger port ranges that need to be open as well. Here is the list:
Call of Duty: MW2 transmits and receives network traffic on ports UDP: 1500, 3005, 3101, 28960 and TCP: 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port). Additionally the Steam client transmits and receives network traffic on ports UDP: 27000-27015, 27015-27030 and TCP: 27014-27050.
As long as all of those ports are completely open, you should be able to connect better with your friends.
Aha, the error is in the ports he said. 27000-27015, 27015-27030
Works with:
27000-27015, 27016-27030, 27031-27050

Yes done all that.
How can I make sure I have a static IP adress?
It's always the same intern IP.
The ports are always open.
Edit; And always the same internet IP.

Hi Gustav.
I had the exact problem as you :(. I have this Router TG787 from Thomson. I've forwarded these ports (on both TCP and UHP)
27030 - 27039
1200
27000 - 27015
1500
3005
3101
28960
27015
27014 - 27050
27000 - 27030
57540
(NOTE: Some of these ports are for Steam too...)
After that: I disabled the built in firewall on the router, and then i restarted.
I launched MW2, and it showed Open for like 3 seconds, but then it went to Strict again!
So at that point, i thoight that this problem had to do about something else. So i double checked my router config, and then I tried to DISABLE the Windows Firewall.
And BAM! IT WORKS! :D
Now I'm host 75% of the time and I can join anyone! :)
So the problem was maybe the router, but mainly the Firewall.
The issue is the Windows Firewall. Just DISABLE it and it WILL work!

Digging this post up from the grave just to properly help people on Windows XP with GFWL NAT Strict issue when the router is not at fault because disabling the Firewall is something people do not want to do just to play a game.
First:-
Open control panel
Click on Windows Firewall
Click on Exceptions tab and click on Add Program
Search for the GFWLClient.exe and add to the list so it shows up in the exceptions list.
This SHOULD resolve the NAT strict problem.
If GFWL is still not set to open, empty the internet cache by going to:-
Control panel
Internet options
Under Browsing history in the general tab click Delete...
Check all boxes and click delete
