I've been having weird problems with MW2. Though I have virtually no issues with lag or hacking in multiplayer games, the game itself often freezes and forces me to restart my computer. I tried every possible fix in the "common problems" thread, and some other stuff i found on the internet, updated all my drivers, but nothing worked at all. Sometimes I'll get lucky and be able to play a few games without freezing, but it happens eventually, and it's really annoying. I have a quad core processor, 4 gigs of ram and an HD4870, and I'm using XP. I just want to know, is this being worked on by IW or someone? I really like the game, but I don't think I'm able to play it very well in its current condition.

Still the same today. Anyone have any ideas?

C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\zone\english

Delete: mp_afghan_load.ff, mp_afghan.ff files or all the map .ff files (back those up)

Go to steam
Right click on MW2
Click Properties
Click Local Files Tab
Verify Integrity of Game Cache

And it'll redownload those files.

See if that works.

I crash too, but I'll usually get at least a good hour or so in. I do what Whups said except for deleting any files. So everytime I crash I just verify files and I can get back to it. You just might have to play it like this, I do, not that big a deal if it works for you. Good luck with that.

I wish they release a patch to fix all these corrupted files. It works, I got few buddies who do this all the time. Play for hours, then do it again.

Good luck.

Yeah that would be nice, I can only get through a chapter and a half in L4D2 before I crash there too. Have no problems with the previous games.

I think it's steam cloud tbh. Only beta they had with steam cloud was the L4D2 demo.

Surprisingly, that worked. It still crashes EVENTUALLY, but I'm able to get a good few hours in before it does. I guess I could play like that. Thanks a lot, man.

I'm sorry for bumping my own thread again, but I'm experiencing the same problem once more. I could actually play for a few hours after trying what Whups suggested, but the next day it was exactly the same as before - the game crashed about 15 minutes in, regardless of whether I verified the game cache or not.

I've since tried even more suggested fixes, but absolutely nothing has improved the situation even slightly. I'm sure it's not my graphics card overheating or anything overheating at all since I've checked the temps and they've all been completely normal, even lower than some other games I play regularly. So, I'm at a loss here. If anyone has found some sort of new solution, I'd be glad to hear it.

I have a quad, i7-860 CPU (4x2.86 GHz) with a Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 motherboard, Win 7 64 bit. At the moment I'm using an NVIDIA GEFORECE GTX 260 GPU, but have gone through the complete ATI 5700-5800 series of GPU's with no success. I have tested my 4 GB RAM (game actually works with only 2 GB but crash-wise it's the same). I've "SeaTools for DOS" checked my Seagate HD and I've ensured mega over-heat-sink to prevent any overheating of my GPU or any other component.

MW2 is a great game, but I am beginning to think the people at Steam/Infinity Ward couldn't care less about this fix (which, judgeing from the forum posts and google search results on the same subject, is game/connection software related without a doubt!) or their customers.

Why can't they own up? Why do they not want to take care of us - their devoted customers? Bad management is my take on that. Poor management always rersults in customer dissatisfaction - and the poor schmuck at the top is only interested in forwarding own career, and is gone when the market reacts and customers dissapear.

Well - I will be very surprized if Steam/Infinity Ward will react to any of this. I think it's too late anyway...I will monitor for a few months if tehre is any response (an honest response) - then I will leave this game and I will spread the word that Steam/Infinity Ward are not worth the money spent on them!

It's so f...... frustrating!

I agree with you....personally i am done with infinity ward...with that match making stupidity and multiple bugs and random freeze on even the greatest pc out there...they will loose a lot of market share for pc games for sure

They dont care about the pc market share, thats why you're having problems in the first place.

I started getting random freezes about a month or two ago. The game would freeze but I could still hear stuff going on in the background normally. I almost always died and then it started up normally. But it would happen once or twice a game- EVERY game. I finally tried rolling back my Geforce drivers to an older version and haven't had the problem since.

Gooberx, that's another problem... When I get a freeze, it's an ultimate version of superfreeze that can be solved only by restarting the computer.

I have the same problem, sometimes it won't happen for a few days and sometimes 3 times in a day, the screen freeze and my sound becomes ''slow-mo'' until it just stops. Nothing works so I have to reboot,

Win 7 64B
4Go DDR3 Ram
Quad Core 2Ghz(Intel Q9000)
GeForce Gtx 260M
(That's a laptop btw)

Any ideas what could be the problem?

I got completely kicked out of steam while playing MW2 today and now when I go to select a game type it says there is nobody playing???

Mine starting freezing about 2 weeks ago. I deleted the zone folder contents and I was able to play for 3 days. However, it just started freezing again.

So I am trying it again. All my hardware and PC are good and I have stress tested everything...so it has to be COD.

i7 920 DO
6gb Corsair Dominator Ram
WD Raptor Drive
GTX 285 Classified VC

Wish there was solution...I did notice though that this started to happen after steam went down for 5 mins.

This happens to me, where my screen goes black and my PC makes a wierd noise. I suspect it's my PCs processor, its like 0.2 gigahertz under min requirements. My PC is also a laptop.

If you have Vista or 7 have a look at the Event Log to see if there are any errors in there that happen around the time that your PC freezes up.

Re-bump.

Any news on a fix? I've randomly started getting this again tonight. It's amazing to think that this bug has been around since the release date, and here we are 9 months later, with the exact same bug. I guess we can tell who the favourites are.

Try puting Specular Map Resolution at any setting that isn't EXTRA.

I recently found out that the specular of this game is bugged and have some problems in some maps.. I was having horrible stutters and the map salvage won't load at all, until I set Specular map resoltion to high, and the rest on extra, untouchable. All the stutters and crash on salvage were gone.

And it happened as well on single player. So i'm afraid you're facing a totally diferent problem here.

so just to keep it clear.... your screen freezes but you still have internet? it sounds like something is overheating to me...

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q8200 @2.33GHz
4 GB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT

I go-ogled the Internet for weeks. I also had this problem...
Well here is the solution!

It is definitively a NVIDIA Driver Problem. At least, for me.
I always tries out new drivers and my problems started when I downloaded new drivers since May this year.
I went back to GeForce Release 197.45 WHQL and didn't experience any problems any more.

Groet...

Exactly my problem, but only on some days very frequently.
Today it happened only once.

a lot of people on my geek forums are saying that when Windows downloads updates (it takes priority over all) and even with a quad core it drains you and slows your calculations down. It's a shot in the dark and there are many other sultions/probable problems, but this is a common one. This is for you too OP have not read too deep into this thread yet, but always post specs when you say I have a computer problem ;)

Nope thats not the problem, I have quadcore with already updated XP and it still freezes for no reason.

Bumping this thread up because I am having exactly the same problem. Having same config except 3GB ram and Radeon 4890 and it just freezes, the interesting part is without getting too hot I can play for a few hours before it freezes again. Very annoying and very tiring when you are on a kill streak.
