I think that this thread should've been posted here.
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=752661
The point on that thread is of people not having a way to change name in game in all Orange Box games.
Well, there are ways to change the name, being the setinfo command one of them, and the only one I know. And it actualy works. But not only this doesn't work for all OB games, it also isn't a good "comon sense" solution to this issue. A new player will not know that this is available to him. He may not be new to the steam community, may have been playing Source based games up until now, and will have to change his steam name if, for any irrelevant reason, he wants to play with another name in an OB game.
Every online game has a name box in the options to allow for changing it. The only exception in this world is any OB game.
You may ask, why would a person ever want to change his name?
or
What's the problem with changing his steam name?
Any person may want to change his name. Or not. That depends on each individual. But having a way of changing it wouldn't hurt anyone, would it? Many persons don't really care much about playing with any name, they just put one and they go all the way with it. But many other persons like changing it to reflect their mood, their willing, having another clan or simply being known with another name in another game..., whatever it is, like I said, the reason is irrelevant but valid.
The biggest problem in this (and it's why I said it should be discussed here in this part of the forums) is when you have lots of friends and you don't know them anymore. I have 184 friends... and I only know about 20 or 30 of them, if even that much. And those are mostly the ones that never change their name much. There's plenty of friends I liked very much and I can't know who they are anymore.
All the other friends become known to me only when they talk to me and I check their aliases. But that only lasts a few days (or even an hour) until they change the steam name again.
Like I said in another post, the Steam Community is a good way to make friends and a good way to have people you like playing with you in any given game. Basically it's a friends community. But since "everyone" seems to be changing thier names everyday, that friends community gets broken. There's little to the point of having friends on steam nowadays.
I would request Valve to change that in the Orange Box games, but I don't know how much they'd care about it. Since I play HL2dm for the most part, I see their careness to be much careless and only pointing at L4D(2). I play a game they seem to despise, so I don't take their care as something we could hope for any day.
So I leave only this question, that if anyone from Valve itself could ever answer it, maybe I could understand why they thought of taking the "player name" box away from OB games. Doesn't make much sense in my point of view...
Why take it out?
PS - There could be a Poll tool in these forums too...
