Is it recommended to play Gothic and Gothic 2 first or are the stories independant from each other?

If so, I will probably wait to purchase Gothic 3 until 1 and 2 are avalable on Steam too.

Well, the story in Gothic 3 is rather thin and all important characters from Gothic 2 almost don't play any role anymore. So I think it doesn't matter much.

You could read the game's story line in wikipedia or somewhere else.

It'd take too long for someone to play the first 2 games.

And believe me the first game is complicated enough to pull your hair out.

I never played Gothic 1 & 2 and I found Gothic 3 to be pretty fun (after installing the community patches). You don't need to play the first two games.

I don't understand these recommendations to not play the first two games. Yes, they aren't required to play G3 but if you like playing games then why not enjoy those too? They're all great games.

We will soon release Gothic 2 on Steam

I liked the first two Gothic games a lot, especially the second part which is the best one of the three, in my opinion.
No, the previous Gothic titles aren't very necessary for the understanding of the story but they're still great games which you shouldn't miss out.

We will soon release Gothic 2 on Steam
Really? That's great news! What about the first one?

We never published the first one so we cannot put it on Steam :(.

Wow. Gothic 2 is now available. I really need to rebuy it here since my CDs are getting hard to read after playing it so many times. Thanks for putting it up.

It should be played in german anyways.
I normally prefere my games englisch (one of the best things about steam is that I can choose the englisch language here) nut this is a german game and it's one of the few with really great german audio.
I also have no idea how the englisch version of this game sounds.

Well, if you like you can try out the English version. You can just switch in Steam and then the appropriate language files get downloaded.

15€... The same price as Gothic 3 despite the fact that it's 3 years older.

Maybe I'll rebuy the game on steam. During a 75% off sale...

Well, this is because it is Gothic 2 with its addon "Night of the Raven" which is like two games in one.

that doesn't really matter. I would rather play through Gothic 2 a tenth time then playing Gothic 3 ever again.

not really. But NOTR is a great addition to Gothic 2.
Can you actually choose between Gothic 2 and Gothic 2 with NOTR? They are quite different. Especially for starters it would be actually better to start without the addon.

The retail version is still ~50% cheaper.

I'd say no. It wasn't even possible with some retail or magazine versions if I remember right. The Addon was installed if you like it or not.

But it would really be better to start without the Addon first because it breaks the balance terribly. Playing as a mage was nearly impossible if I remember right.

Shouldn't you guys be matching your own prices on other digital distribution sites? (/kaff kaff GOG kaff $10 kaff)

It is an excellent game, though. I love the clumsiness of this series. And the, like, 3 (very) unique/distinct English voice-actors they recycle for hundreds of characters.

Not to mention that they have the first game too.

Wait a second... 15 euros? I thought dollar was the only currency on steam. Anyway, why 15? I see Gothic 2 for 15 dollars here (Brazil), so it should be something like 9 or 10 euros right?

1$ == 1€ for most games on here. There is even a looooooooooooooong thread about that in the general section. I really wonder how you could possibly not have seen that. It's been here for over a year and this problem has not been fixed yet.

Then I'd say yay for my german retail version which had 4 Discs and made it possible to install the games seperately. But the mage was really overpowered without the Addon. I was easily able to kill every Orc the first time I entered the "Minental" and left with level 25+ (don't know any more). What I still know is that later I let the orcs storm the castle to get my captain and killed them all too. One of the dead Paladins gave me his Rune (the 5 mana-points magic missile thing (cannot remember the name) which made the mage way overpowered with all the mana I had.
playing with the addon you could just forget about all that. Most Orcs seemed to have gotten a lot of fire resistence in it which made it extremely hard.

Just saw it, thanks. I have no idea how I missed that. Unbelievable (the dollar = euro thing, not me missing that thread - well, that's kinda unbelievable too).

I never played Gothic, but played Gothic 2. (I played the demo for Gothic, liked it and bought the second one thinking it was the first.) Loved Gothic 2, seemed easy enough to pick up most of the story. I don't know how well that transfers over to the third game.

I've always been on the fence over buying the third one. I loved the second one, greatly preferred it to Morrowind. I think initially I was put off by system requirements (my old PC wouldn't have handled it very well) and of course the less than favourable reviews following all the bugs in the initial release. Now that it's on Steam, I might just have to consider getting it again.

Look what I found here (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/gothic_2_gold_edition). Two games in one for a lower price with no DRM and extra stuff.

I played gothic 2 a long time ago and its a very addicting game and a lot of fun.

Since I never got a chance to play gothic 1, I watched the movie for it. Its on youtube. A bunch of guys got together and made a movie from the game.
