Hey, this is a problem I've put up with until now, if only because I was too lazy to do anything about it to begin with, but it's really starting to eat on my nerves now. Whenever the sun is out in the sky, it shines black. Anyone know how to fix this?

User that have an ATI card running Morrowind on Vista and 7 get the black sun.
There is an easy fix, but it looks horrible, so I'm not even going to link that.

Proper fix:
To get back the sun you will need MGE svn 118 and phal's Sun shaft rays shader. And a graphic card with shader version 2 or 3 support I think.
Download links
for MGE - http://sourceforge.net/projects/morrgraphext/files/SVN%20Builds/MGE%203.8%20SVN%20build/mge3.8-SVN_rev-0118.7z/download
for the shader - http://www.speedyshare.com/586255660.html

Here are the threads if you want to read more about it.

How to make this work.
1. get the files
2. copy the files from "mge3.8-SVN_rev-0118.7z" to the Morrowind install directory
3. copy the "Data Files" directory from "sunshaft v002a.zip" to the install directory
4. open the "NoSunGlare" directory from "sunshaft v002a.zip" and copy "Data Files" to the install directory
5. (optional) open MGE by running "MGEgui.exe", configure resolution, AA, AF and distant land
6. in MGE go to "Render State" and check "Hardware Shader"
7. in MGE go to "Misc" and check "Update shader variables" and "Supply shaders with depth info"
8. in MGE go to "Tools", click "Shader editor" and then "Edit active"
9. in the shader list search for "sunshaft_v002a" and double click it, it should move from the list to the lower box.
10. click save, close "Shader editor" close MGE

Now you should be able to run Morrowind using the normal laucher.
Did I mention you also get sun rays?...

It should change from this

The sun is bright but the "faked" sun glare is still dark. Looks like a nuke just went off... I can post some pics if the explanation is a little iffy for ya. :D

Is it supposed to be like that grayish because its dusk?

Know now that its not because its dusk... ;)

I used the original files, turned off "steam community in game" and i had to put the resolution to 1024x764. Then I can use MGE to change it to the resolution I want.

Doesn't help those who can't get svn 118 to work.

Hierox you also need to copy "Data Files\Textures\tx_sun_flash_grey_05.DDS" to remove morrowind's sun glare. The black should go away.

Thank you for you're help. I can finally enjoy Morrowind better than ever. MGE wasn't around when I played it when it originally came out. Looks extremely good now!

Its a foggy day in Balmora, but the sun is finally bright!

I have same problem, got the fix, but where the hell is the texture folder? It's not in the data files folder...

Help?

D:\Games\Steam\steamapps\common\morrowind\Data Files\Textures\tx_sun_flash_grey_05.DDS

If you don't have the folder you should create it. Though if you installed MGE it should be there.

Thanks for posting this, I followed this exactly and it did fix my sun issue. I had tried replacement sun textures previously and none of them worked, it was still black hole sun.

However, following these instructions *exactly*, now my water rendering kinda goes *chop chop chop chop* rapidly when I look at it or run. Any advice?

EDIT: I disabled Catalyst AI in the CCC and that resolved it nicely.
