This game is fascinating to me. It reminds me of the games I was a bit too young to really appreciate, the Ultimas and the Wizardries, yet feels somehow more approachable.

Just have the demo so far, but I'm thinking of dropping the $20.

Would love to talk to others about how to play this cool game and what character builds work well (seems kinda complicated!).

J_D,

I could be wrong, but I think this forum is actually new. I recall when I first purchased Eschalon I wanted to come to the Steam Forum and was never able to find one. It's possible I may have overlooked something, but that might be a partial explanation for why there are no other posts.

However, that said, one of the reasons I came here was because I wanted to share my two cents about Eschalon. I for one am not a big fan and if I could return it, I would. Being an old school RPG gamer, I don't care for the game.

I find the design exceedingly frustrating. You're pretty much forced to Min-Max your character if you want to be even marginally successful. I have yet to play a magic user, but so far I have tried to play a stealthy character and find myself unhappy. Two measly bats will wittle you down to near death. Perhaps as a hack-and-slash it might be fun, but isn't that contrary to what an RPG is?

Moreover it bothers me that you're limited to a male character; the excuse from the developers being that the story is designed for a male character (and god forbid they should have to design the art assets for it).

The story seems interesting if a bit hackneyed... haven't we seen the protagonist-with-amnesia enough times in role-playing games?

I've been trying to play again on my laptop, but I find myself - yet again - tired of it.

Yeah, I have to admit that I've also tired of it, even before the end of the demo. I was attracted to the idea of a "new" old game. I also liked the turn-based nature, the complexity, and what seemed to be a huge, incredible world to explore. I can't help wishing there were more games like this (whether modern in style or retro).

LIKE this... but... not too much like this.

I can't even place exactly why I went from thinking it was awesome to thinking I'd rather play something else. Maybe part 2 will fare better.

I used to play Wizardry, Bard's Tale, Ultima 1 on up..
Thanks for the info, I won't be purchasing this.
Oh, there is a newer Bard's Tale available, but it doesn't include the old versions with it.
Wish we could get the Wizardry series on Steam!

The newer Bard's Tale is not the Bard's Tale you're looking for, I'm afraid, unless you think you'd like an inferior version of Diablo based upon British fart humor. :)

It's probably decent, but, still, it's not really the Bard's Tale.

I would actually really love to try the old Wizardry games. And Might and Magic and Bard's Tale... I'm just scared they'd be really hard and I'd wuss out. :(

I really liked the game for what it's worth. It's not much of a "role" playing game, but it's a great min/maxing sort of game with a pretty good story. If you love looking at stats, figuring out which is the best to increase or how to powergame, this game is for you. I found this game really scratched an itch that modern games don't do anymore. Modern games in comparison are simplistic and easy, developers feel that everyone is entitled to beat them no matter how "HURFF DURFFF" that person might be. This game is not like that, and that's what makes it good.
