The GDC 2010 website is up and looking down the list Valve have booked a room (ES 512) as exhibitors.
Let the wild speculation begin!

This could turn out very much like the E3 thread...

Is GDC really the sort of event for announcing titles? It doesn't seem so to me, but others will know a lot more than me. Are new games ever announced at GDC?

I'm not sure if I can wait until March. Good grief. If that were the announcement date it'd better release pretty damn soon after that.

It has been pointed out that Valve do not need to rely on these events and can announce whenever they like. This means the annoucement could be before this date, but they could use the room to show off some footage or something.

Really though, this time, what else could they show? And please don't say L4D3. :p (Edit: somebody has beaten me to it). E3 is more the sort of event for the big announcement, but there is no way I'm waiting until E3 2010. To reiterate, the announcement could happen at any time.

Like I said last time, I'm not getting my hopes. (I inevitably will though).

I think I read that they will be making some Addon pack for L4D2 that will have you meeting the L4D surivivors.

But I swear to god they better talk about something different than L4D or I will have to stoop down to a lower level and rage the forums.

I will bet hard money that Episode 3 will either be looked at in-depth or revealed at GDC. It's in their nature and interest to use Episode 3 as an example of the progress in the PC development circle, even if it's not in the form of a lecture.

Valve's gotta hurry it up with Episode 3. Sooner Episode 3 is out, sooner Gman can insert Gordan into another wacky all new adventure.....and we'll get Team Fortress 3 with Half Life's 3 new game engine.:-!

Valve is an entertainment software and technology company based in Bellevue, Washington. The company´s portfolio of entertainment properties account for over 20 million retail units sold worldwide and over 80% of PC online action gameplay. Valve also develops leading-edge technologies, such as the Source game engine and Steam, the leading online platform for PC games and digital entertainment.

I can't imagine them going there with nothing to show. What for, just so people can play the latest DLC or add on for L4D2? I don't see that so I'm guessing they have something to show. That doesn't translate into Ep3 necessarily, though we could hope.

Yeah, I think while Valve continually makes great games that many people take for granted, they have always been the leader in innovation. I would love to see the next "Half-Life 2" from Valve, so to speak. As Marc Laidlaw has stated before, they are always trying to improve their work and best the previous release. I want Episode 3 to be that next great step, or at least the next best thing..

I am not inclinded to think so. L4D2 was a very unique change for Valve and one that I believe to be relatively contained. No sequel for a while, I'm sure. Demonstrating just DLC at a gaming event? I don't think so.

Consider how many conferences Valve has appeared at, and not said a word about Episode 3, since that October 2008 interview. Does Valve really feel it's worth going to these and discussing dlc/updates, while their most dedicated fanbase is waiting for information on another game, just to ultimately let them down again.

I highly doubt they'll show anything of EP3 there. The Game Developers Conference (GDC) is the largest annual gathering of professional video game developers, focusing on learning, inspiration, and networking. The event comprises an expo, networking events, awards shows such as the Independent Games Festival and the Game Developers Choice Awards, and a variety of tutorials, lectures, and roundtables by industry professionals on game-related topics covering programming, design, audio, production, business and management, and visual arts.
Wikipedia, yeah :)
I've read articles about it for a couple of times, and it isn't really a place for announcing games despite that they might talk about future games. At least I can't recall such thing happening (yeah, EP3 has been already announced)... Though I think the time seems good for talking about EP3 now that L4D2 has been released and some time has passed then.

GDC is the Games Developer Conference - it's for programmers and designers, not for the press. Valve has presented at many of these conferences and they talk about things like graphics, physics, AI, Steam, and other technical issues. They're not going to announce any new products.

Here's a list of their presentations along with slides, speaker notes, and other materials:

Probably some L4D2 stuff and TF2.

For what Team Fortress 2 is now, I don't think GDC would be the greatest place to show such a thing. Maybe back when they had just revealed the art style, as well as some pretty nifty lighting equations - but I think that what TF2 stands for has pretty much been put down and passed.

As with Left 4 Dead 2, the same thing applies.

Yeah they're totally gonna dodge an announcement at E3 and instead reveal it at a low-key game developer event two months later.

First of all, Valve is not dependent on GDC or E3, GamesCom, PAX or any other game convention. They'll announce something when they're ready. This certainly wouldn't be the first time someone confirms or announces a game at GDC.

And once again, GDC 2010 takes place in March, which is about three months before E3.

I do not see what else they could concievably be demonstrating.

The GDC isn't really a place companies roll out new titles. It's more of a tech conference then anything else.

What did they show off at GDC 2009? 2008? 2007?

I knew that, I wanted him to look!

GDC isn't where they talk about new things, it's where they explain things they have already finished. The only time they talked about a project in advance of it's release there was the cartoon aspect of tf2, and that wasn't new information at the time they talked about it.

My guess for this year? The new aspects of the source engine integrated into l4d2, which I guess is technically about Ep3 since it uses the same engine, and I'm sure will take advantage of the technical improvements implemented in the engine.

New information about ep. 3? doubtful.

I believe both Fable 2 and Gears of War 2 were announced at GDC, for example. Game announcements aren't the emphasis of GDC, but that doesn't mean no one can't announce or reveal a game at the event. With that said, most of us are just desperate here.

GDC is not really an annoucement platform, its a conference by devs, for devs. I'd put my money on they talking about their development process, or where they think gaming is going, or digital distribution. Not ep3 though.

I'm too lazy to read 9 pages, so I'm sorry if this has been posted, but I'm guessing GDC will have something on this: http://www.teamfortress.com/post.php?id=3279. The biggest issue for me was windows live but for this case it was even a bit okay since playing with console players is a nice idea. Paying extra for it was not.
I still hope after helping out with Bioshock 2 they can continue the work on it and finish the Crossing. I would also like to see a Dark Messiah 2. This time with more support. I swear if they ever do the same they did with Dark Meesiah(letting Arcane drop the support for it) i would not buy a single game from UbiSoft again. Its sad that this game has nearly the same amount of informations(except for a trailer)valve has released for Episode 3. I would really like to see if this idea would work out.

In my opinion, Zeno Clash was game of the year. I'm glad somone is finally recognising that fantastic game.

And I never understand the best technology nominations. They seem to pick games that look pretty to them. And nothing that actually is innovative and advanced in technology. Like the AI in Left 4 Dead, with 100's of zombies being rendered on screen navigating complex environments, monitoring loads of gameplay data from 4 people in realtime accross the internet.
Yeah, I clearly understand why Assassin's Creed II is in there

Uncharted 2 for almost all the ♥♥♥♥ing nominations.

In my opinion, Zeno Clash was game of the year. I'm glad somone is finally recognising that fantastic game.

Well, I wouldn't go THAT far. However, the atmosphere of that place... just SUPERB. I think the biggest downfall was that while the arena melee combat was certainly well built and a nice change of pace, it didn't fit with the rest of the game well. What I wanted to do more than anything in that strange new world was EXPLORE. It was just screaming to be explored. And yet, that is exactly what you could not do. It was like two really well thought out achievements in game design that didn't mesh well together.

As cool as that would be, it's just not Valve's style to let an outside force influence their chances of talking about a product..

It didn't use to be that way... I dunno what happened recently in the past couple of years. Doug Lombardi?

It's always been that way. It was like that with HL2, and was revealed to a magazine only when Valve felt there was something ready to show, even though yes, they went back and changed a lot of things before release..

Also, consider Team Fortress 2. People thought it fell off of the face of the earth, even more so than Episode Three, believe it or not.. :p It was only shown when it was nearing completion..

I haven't played neither MW2 nor Uncharted 2, but based on what I've seen and read, Uncharted 2 has more business being among the nominees than MW2.

Not this bad... no way. They use to at least talk about their projects a bit more.

Nope. Not Team Fortress 2.. were you around for that fiasco? They didn't talk about it for what would become a decade, I believe. People (I was one of them) literally waited over a decade to hear anything about TF2, and keep in mind, this project was announced beforehand..

100% disagree. It WAS the best game of the year, nothing else I played (which was everything that keeps getting nominated) was anywhere near as fun, compelling or original. Again, in my opinion.

Son... I've been around since Keen... :)

To prove my point: we actually got screenies AND videos of TF2 before the major change, and there were interviews as well. I can certainly try and dig some up later. Things were no where NEAR what they are now as far as willingness to just start talking about projects in early development. It is much more carefully orchestrated now.

Did you not know about all that media/interviews? Were YOU around?! :p

They didn't reveal anything for years about TF2. Yes, I was around, and yes, I've seen the images. Much like HL2, there was wonder if the game was even in development..

That's not true. I believe the first shots of TF2 were released in '99 at E3. There were videos too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qUvIcbKZkI

That was pretty darned fast, considering most people's intro to Team Fortress was not with Quakeworld TF, but with TFC... which was RELEASED in '99! So they started talking about TF2's details and showing media the same year most people were made aware of TFC.

So we got plenty of media, as well as talk about what the game was going to be. Then, when we did have that stint where news dried up, they at least explained why: they were switching to the new Source engine and were changing around the design.

So as I said before in regards to Valve's take on giving us any info about EP3: It didn't use to be that way... ;)

surfrock22
01-22-2010, 11:38 PM
I think you are missing the point. I was talking about the time period between the switch from the old engine to Source. How long did it take to get real information? A lot longer than the time period between Episode Two and Episode Three, that's for sure..

I believe a lot of games or tech have been revealed at past events.

OnLive was announced at GDC.
Crytek's new engine for Crysis on consoles was revealed there.
Etc.

It seems that Valve will be very busy at GDC, but do not plan to reveal Episode Three. Probably the best we can hope for is that somebody pesters them and manages to squeeze something out of them.

We won't get EP3 at GDC, if we are lucky some new cool engine features. (just a feeling of mine).

But the best thing we might get is a interview where gabe says that there is no info about EP3 but that we will get a ♥♥♥♥load of updates for L4D2 and TF2.

The boundary of what GDC is (and even CES to that regard) is getting more and more vague. I just hope that this year it retains the development side of things, especially on the PC, and that E3 sticks to the celebration of the industry that we've come to know and love from it last year & 2006 and back.

The GDC 2010 website is up and looking down the list Valve have booked a room (ES 512) as exhibitors.
Let the wild speculation begin!

Counter Strike 2. Be Prepared. Be very prepared.

Seriously though, a new counterstrike wouldnt take much time at all to whip up. I wouldnt be surprised. And Gabe said they were either doing that next or Portal 2, although he personally favored Portal 2...

EDJE

Why, exactly?

Because I'd rather a good, sizeable game with the same engine, then an announcement for both a new engine and a game which would take more time and work.

I'm a patient guy, but I'd rather EP3 was on the source engine.

If, although, the announce Episode Three along with a few moderate updates to the Source Engine I'd be fine. :)

You are suggesting they just abolish progress? If a new engine is in the new works I see no reason to believe that it would be arbitrary.

How fallacious.

surfrock22

They can't be making a new engine and working on Episode Three at the same time?

Who knows, maybe they've been working on a new engine since the completion of Source, like the transition from Half-Life to Half-Life 2 (work begun immediately after the release of Half-Life 1)?

A sequel to Count-strike can be just whiped up? LOL! Both Half-Life 2 and Team Fortress 2 took them forever to make. I'd be very surprised if we see a sequel to the most popular online fps with-in the next couple of years.

Oh, right. Maybe an engine reveal, then? :D

Everyone is carrying on about a new engine, I seriously doubt that. If they unveil anything, which is extremely unlikely, they'd be unveiling new steam updates before then. Episode Three is going to be released on a very similar Source engine to what we know now. Any Significant overhauls to Source is still a couple of years away in my opinion. Especially when I was given the impression that they're happy with the current visuals in Souce by the Valve employee's.

GDC for Valve is more likely to be a recruitment opportunity. I see PS3 development in the very near future, and possibly a Wii gamble by Valve. None of which we'll hear about until next year or later.

Sorry to think realistically guys, but hey, some of your comments here are becoming quite ludicrous.

It was a semi-joke about it being revealed at GDC. I just meant that I think they've been developing one for quite some time, and yes, if Episode Three continues as planned, they will wait until its release to show anything, most likely..

I doubt he'll show anything about Episode 3. I may be wrong, but apart from Half-Life 2's original release I don't see Episode 3 being relevant to digital distrubtion; at least not enough to merit a debut.

I don't understand what you're trying to say. He's being awarded for making, quote; "game design at a crucial juncture in video game history, paving the way for the many who followed them."

Although he is also being awarded for Steam, I see it as an award for the games more so. There's no proof either way he would show a trailer, but it is a pretty darn logical time to do so.
