View Full Version : 5970 Core clock at 1400? o_O

I've been running the ATI automatic clock tool for about the past hour since I recently got a new 5870 and I want to see how much I could overclock it (I normally go about 30-40% under what the tool tells me to put it at, just to be safe) The GPU Core clock is at 1400Mhz!!!!!! The stock for this is freakin 850Mhz! Does that seem odd to any of you guys? The tool is still running by the way, just hit 1405 o_O

And sorry, its a 5870 not a 5970

Who cares if it sounds odd. THAT IS FREAKIN AWESOME.

Its freaking REDICULOUS! I had overclocked it to 1100Mhz core, and 1500Mhz VRAM, but it would always crash, is it possible that I can only overclock the Core a lot and not the memory?

Are you sure you are actually applying the overclock?
That isn't really possible on the core w/o LN2...

Freakshow2599

The 1100Mhz isnt possible? Or are you talking about what the tool is telling me?

and its only at 85 Degrees!

Not trying to piddle on your parade but that overclock is not possible with standard cooling.
It most likely does not get applied by the overclocking tool or the card's BIOS.

Do some benchmarks (Furmark for example) to compare stock to overclocked performance, that'll probably reveal no difference between the settings.

I know I know, I just like getting my hopes up lol, I'm settling at 1000/1350, does that seem like a good OC for a 5870?

Corrected that for you

LMAO nah, it seriously was only at 85, but the ATi overclock tool thing is junk, something seemed a bit fishy when the core got to 1200Mhz and the temps were only at 75 degrees

Reinstall the Catalyst Control Center?

I have done that many times, but the tool was always junk, I ran the stability test thing that came with it, with the core at 1665, and IT PASSED

Play a game. But be sure to set the fan at 100% before you do.

Stability tests is crap with CCC, use Futurmark or any graphic stress programs.

Yeah I know, that's what I saying before, lol I tried running it with FurMark and my PC crashed xD but there was a little window that popped up from something in the residence saying that a driver has stopped working and has recovered, could that mean there is a different problem as well?

No. It does that when you overclock too much.

Freakshow2599

Because that never happened when I overclocked my 4870 too much, and trust me, I overclocked the ♥♥♥♥ outta that card.

Its happened several times on both ATI and Nvidia cards of mine.

Hmm, now I cant even overclock it by like 100 mhz, the core and the mem

Could have fried the card.

it still works fine when I use normal clocks, and like 50 Mhz over the normal clocks. My friend also has a 5870 and he cant over clock his at all without it crashing, I went over there to help him and it would get all pixely if he OCed it at all.

lol, dang, I didn't get the chance to bring my marshmallows. I guess no smores for me tonight :(

Does the card have warranty, send it back as defective and you'll get replacement.

Freakshow2599
12-26-2009, 06:32 PM
Yeah, I think so. I've been using it for a week though o_O Does "not being able to OC" count as a defect though? Or are some cards just not overclock able?

I was really looking forwards to 450$ dollar smores :(

Then thats all the headroom you have. Set the fan speeds higher and see if you can push the clocks any more. Give these (http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=3679&p=4) a read (http://www.anandtech.com/weblog/showpost.aspx?i=657).

I wouldnt try OCing dual GPU cards.

Freakshow2599
12-26-2009, 06:38 PM
Its not a dual GPU card, I corrected myself on my first post, it is indeed a 5870 and its not a heat problem, the card never heats up above 75 degrees

Hahahahaha, yeah I'm sure the smores will taste delicious! :D

If there is some serious/minor/major/bad/big/small/whatever problems with your GPU, don't hesitate to send it back. Just tell them your GPU is "defect", don't mention overclocking part.

Does anyone know anything about MSI's warranty?

Does anyone know anything about MSI's warranty?

Uh oh... MSI warranty from what I heard is crap.

Assuming you buy from newegg - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127471

The warranty says:
Parts - 2 years limited
Labor - 2 years limited

So you have two years using this graphic card then send it back due to defect product.

You just need a proof of purchase due to date of purchase so they know when your warranty expires.

I bought it from a local store, it was the only one I could find since Im in canada and didnt want to get from a US supplier! ive only had it for a week, and I still have my receipt

Might as well hold close to that receipt, maybe you can check warranty with the manufacturer themselves.

Here a support site for MSI Warranty. I read it and its pretty good.

Yeah, its all up to you. You own the card, you love the card, you slept with it, you made ba.... oh excust me I meant you know how the card works. So generally you determine how you lie to the support.

Just tell them that it has been crashing randomly or something.

Freakshow2599

Yeah, I'll say that I keep getting fuzzy red pixels or something, would that work? Thats normally a factor of OCing it too much.

Hardwood

They'll try the card, find it works normally and send it back.
There's no guarantees on OC unless OC'd from factory.
Good luck.
