View Full Version : Freeze With Opening Video

Anyone else have the problem when you start the game, the opening videos lock at some point.

I think it is the steam message trying to pop up, I am not sure. Anyways I can't get the game to run. It keeps locking up on any video that is played. I was able to get in one time and I tried to restart it, but 1/2 way through the new game video it also froze up.

I have tried everything.

United Offensive runs fine. And so does the COD2 multiplayer. Just the single player for cod2.

try creating a .txt file with nothing in it, then rename it to the name of the video crashing your game. Make a backup of the video and replace the video with the renamed txt file.
It fixed my issues with crashing in World at War on my old system.
It SHOULD theoretically help here.

That will not work because it is all of the videos at random times. I know this does not make sense so I will explain.

The startup of the game gives you the activision logo spinning around, the the IC logo, then finally the start game video introduction. It has froze for me on each one of those. AND it has also froze on me with the starting mission videos that go with each. Each a random thing. And it is the most annoying thing I have ever experienced with a video game.

It ran fine before. Before what! I have no idea. It just started doing this out of the blue. My first impresssion is that the Steam updates of the Steam software off the top of my head caused this. My 2nd would be some update of directx somewhere along the lines is causing it. Also it could be my internet explorer file. ieplorer.exe. That usually causes any computer to lock up. The last I mentioned will also cause a complete crash of the system if it is not working correctly...FYI.

Anyways it made the game unplayable and unenjoyable for me. It kinda stinks when you have to reboot your computer five or six times just to get the game started.

Oh I forgot to mention, the multiplayer works fine. No troubles at all.

Hey man! In order to get past the startup screen with the spinning logo that freezes......

(this allows me to at least play)

In windows before you start you game change your monitors resolution to 1024x768 then start the game. After it starts then go into options and change the in-game resolution back to whatever you like to play at. This temp fix works until I log out of the game. Then I have to do it all over again. At least you can play until they fix the issue. Good luck!

SAME issue! I just bought it yesterday! And it won't get past the opening 'activision' clip! I know its not my computer, cuz it can handle almost any games, especially ones this old. Is this a matter of downloading a patch, perhaps?

oh yeah, and changing the resolution didn't work

Found out how to fix this - at least, for me this worked. First of all, just try skipping the video as soon as it pops up. That worked as a temporary fix for me.
But if you're anything like me, you don't want a temporary fix. in this case: open the 'My Games' tab, right click on Call Of Duty 2, click properties, click the 'local files' tab, and then click 'verify integrity of game cache'. This worked. For me at least.

Just to reopen this thread.

It still does the same thing even with the new version of Steam. I thought maybe that would clear it up.

Also I thought maybe it would have something to do with the in-game community setting but it does not.

The only way to play the game is to escape through the video each time it pops up. If you miss it you have to restart your computer. With this though you can not enjoy the opening videos of each mission. Yeah they also do the same thing!

I am surprised this still has not been addressed. Maybe neither Steam or (surprisingly) Activision give a hoot.

THIS SHOULD NOT BE!!

The will force CoD2 to skip the intros and go straight to the main menu
Start Steam / right click Call of Duty 2 / Click PROPERTIES
Under general tab click SET LAUNCH OPTIONS
paste "+set com_introplayed 1" (without quotes) click ok

Mine freezes up almost immediately most of the time. Activision says to set your desktop to 800X600 to play the game. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. No way I'm doing that just to play this game. Verifying file integrity also did not work.

Hopefully this last fix will work. Thanks.

Oh, and Glasseye67, if this is the most annoying thing you've ever experienced with a game, you should try Medal of Honor: Airborne! Just trying to install it crashes my PC every time!

So whats the scoop on this, I have the same issue, But both cod1 and 2 are doing this. And I took it over to my other machine, and even on that machine it does it. Is steam gonna get busy working on this issue or what? It's not the users place to have to adjust this and that to play the game, Steam should be on top of it, ensuring our games work for what we have paid for! Mine started clear out of the blue, everything was working perfect, then one day it just started, and it was after a steam update came out. And now just playing is a challenge.. I'm pretty sure it only happens with vsync on.
