View Full Version : Game crashes at launch if install directory contains accented characters

We have recently confirmed that a problem where the game doesn't start (i.e. crashes before even opening a window) can in most cases be caused by it being installed into a directory which has accented characters (or otherwise non-ASCII characters) in the path.
E.g. if you have installed Steam into something like:
C:\Gàmès\Steam\...
chances are that SamHD will crash at start. Until we find the exact cause of this problem, the workaround is to rename the directory and redownload the exe. Please see here for details: http://forums.seriouszone.com/showthread.php?59430-Windows-error-Serious-Sam-HD-has-stopped-working-on-launch&p=934225&viewfull=1#post934225

Not sure yet. But we will get it fixed either way. In the mean time, please use the workaround.

I've responded on your thread. Did you have non-English characters there before? If so, please try to delete the exe file and then Verify Game Cache to get it downloaded again.

Hi I have this same problem, what happens is that .... to run the game nothing comes out, no window with the game ... and when I check the files of the game is always downloaded. exe, I have it in the path: C:\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\hd Serious sam the first encounter (as indeed there is no accent) I can do?

I have the exact same problem - it's stuck on "installing DirectX 2/2", I press cancel, launch the game again, stuck on "Preparing to launch...".
Then I do a game file validation and it downloads the .exe again (13 megs). I did this like 3 times and it always does this.
Could this be because the Steam folder is located in the "Program Files(x86)" folder? Does that count as non-ASCII characters?
