The speeds are given in 'Kbps'. I can't tell whether that's in bits or bytes because I always thought it was written kB for bytes and kb for bits. Much appreciated if someone could tell me what Steam's survey uses.

B= byte's, b = bit's.

It does not matter whether its KB, Kb, MB or Mb.

There are 8bits per Byte.

1,024Kb/s = 1Mb/s
2,048Kb = 2Mb/s
10,000Kb/s = 10Mb/s

2 Megabytes of data is equivalent to 16 Megabits per second, which is considerably high for a world-wide 'most popular' speed.

That and the fact that most connection speeds are advertised in bits per second leads me to believe that the connection is given in Kilobits, not Kilobytes.

If you expand the network thingy, you see '56k', and we know that

56.0 Kbps = 56 Kilobits.

The one you're looking at is typed like 2,048.0 Kbps, the same as 56.0 Kbps.

So it's Kilobits.

Btw 2,040 Kbps is about 250 Kilobytes a second.

Much appreciated if someone could tell me what Steam's survey uses.

Someone posting on a forum: could go both ways.

Any professional publication: B is byte, b is bit, network speed always given in bits per second.
