Hey I'm 28 and it gives me a scare once in a while. Being scared of a game (or movie) is more about how much you can get into it, suspending reality. Not neccessarly how old or how much of a wuss you are.

True. But it clearly decides wether (s)he should be playing this game or not. Nevermind evaunit1c, the same goes for him/her as well.

There's nothing wrong with being scared -- at any age. I was terrified by the Alma scenes in F.E.A.R.

I definitely had my share of shocks and "oh****oh****oh****" moments in Dead Space.
One that springs to mind is the hydroponics lab, specifically the untouched grow chamber. Everything just seemed too perfect, too clean...and the instant something popped out of a vent, I immediately ran for a corner and sat there for a good thirty minutes, constantly waving my pulse rifle back and forth. I don't think I've ever had a game put me in a situation like that before. I wasn't afraid to move because I was low on health or short on ammo, it was because I was genuinely convinced that, the instant I took a step, I'd be hit by something.
Every time I go into that place, I take it slow.

And I'm sure everyone's gone "OH, FU-" at the beginning of the game. That elevator sequence made me jump in my chair.

It's those moments, though, that make the game excellent. Nowadays, games rarely get me truly scared, so these new experiences made me very happy with my purchase.

It has a really good atmosphere, especially with good headphones/screen size and such. Even though its scripted, first playthrough should send a few chills down your spine.

It was actually the reason why I upgraded from my ancient 15 inch screen. I was playing on my bro's PS3 and I couldn't even see the in-game menu.

The only real time this game has scared me was when I was getting ambushed and one of those baby things was floating to me from the side (dont ask me why that got me it just did, pitch black room ftl)

Other than that its just a few startles that you eventually get used to. Least it stays abit unpredictable unlike Doom 3 for example.

The only time I got frightened was when I was attacked by a tentacle.

Other than that the enemies were funny as hell-rushing at a heavily armoured enginer, wielding a pulse rifle and the ability to stop time :P

Not really sure if this game really is legitimately scary.
It relies on cheap jumpscares and graphic content a bit too much to be truly horrifying.
Then again it had parts with that invincible enemy that only actually attacks you in 1 room but you can still hear it chasing you for quite some time. That's also why I hate that damn thing.

Basically if you're afraid of things that aren't actually there and if you're intimidated to make another step forward, to open that door and go into that room because you're scared of what might be inside of it. If you feel helpless and alone. That's horror.
Silent hill pulls that off quite well.

Enemies jumping in your face and ripping your head of in gory ways if you don't shoot them with your arsenal of guns, that's an action game.

Pop in your N'sync CD out loud, and you'll realize this game isn't scary at all.
Sound is what sets the whole atmosphere up.
It's important, more important for horror games and movies than for any other genre in fact.
Of course, if you take that away, it's not nearly as atmospherical and thus frightening as it was before, einstein.

*Sigh* I really like this game and think it was definately worth the €7.50 I got it for... but I just can't play it for more than 10minutes or the next save point each week. :(

It really freaks the hell out of me, heh. Right now i'm only as far as getting to the tram(You know the bit where your shuttle explodes and then you're told to run to the tram to get to the next part of the ship? Yep, that part) and i've had this game since the christmas sale. :3

I'm more scared of the fact that if I die, it takes me a minutes to load again. Load times take forever for some reason. I also hate how you are always low on some supply which adds to the "scare" factor.

FEAR wasn't scary at all, good gameplay but not scary at all. There's like one startling part in it(At the very begining in the sewer - you might miss it though, it's sort of hard catch but I won't ruin it for you ;)) but that's about it. I got the FEAR collection(All expansions to FEAR and the game) for like €20 retail. :) Such a pity that game's online play is practically dead... Was a lot of fun.

The original FEAR and maybe the first expansion were the only good ones. THe other expansions sucked. I haven't played FEAR 2 yet but it looks like a whole different game.

I just beat Dead Space and I have to say that it really drew me in near the Chapter 7 onwards. I think it's got a bit or replay value just because of the weapons. The scariness was only at the beginning. It tapers off afterwards, either that or you just get use to people jumping at you.

Dude, I almost cried while playing Black Plague. But. I played Penumbras before playing Dead Space, and while Penumbra was the scariest thing I've ever seen, Dead Space was kinda... lame. Sure in the part when you're running from the monster that just keeps regenerating I was in a little panic, but that was pretty much it.

That's all probably because in Dead Space you have a gun and you can kill nearly every monster you see. So, you can just eliminate your enemy. Then again in Penumbra you're a weak university teacher and you don't have a gun, making you the helpless alien amongst the infected.

Makes a huge difference if you can't kill your enemy.

Edit: Maybe you should try playing Penumbra too, bobsbarricades. Become immune to games like Dead Space :D It only requires some psychological torture...

I'd rather play this game and be terrified of it tbh. I used to get a little creeped out in the firstcouple of levels, but after that it feels more and more like an action game and less like a survival horror.

To tell the truth i didn't really find this game scary. To me the game felt all the same throughout the game. The only time i was scared was at the last cinematic. That scared me so bad i had a hard time sleeping that night. probably didn't help that it was 2 in the morning though.

The game i would say is the scariest is the suffering. I am not a big fan of having scary pictures pop up in front of me.

I was not as scared of the pop-outs or the monsters as much as the underlying fear that EA has accomplished. Seeing a Necromorph in the distance my instant reaction is to think I will see them next room, but I don't. It is the idea that you are on board this doomed vessel with a colony of these things and only your light and gun as your aid. Pretty creepy... It really didn't scare me much in the later 4th, kinda dissapointing in that respect.

DS is a good bit up the scare ladder compared to most other games in the genre. However, besides the near-panic which was caused by the regenerating monster, I was pretty much able to handle the rest while staying calm. Ok, first time I was attacked by a tentacle in a hallway I had little idea what happened or how to deal with it.

As others have mentioned, though, Penumbra is really scary. Reminds me that I still haven't played it through in its entirety..... hmmm.....

If you don't find DS scary, try Penumbra (though it is more like adventure/roleplay than FPS action).
If you find DS scary..... forget that you've ever heard the name Penumbra... if you don't like watching someone kill others on tv, you probably won't like going through 3 levels of hell.

You know, I envy those who are scared playing this. I really am. I played the first Resident Evil on PSX the year it came out. I was only 10 and it scared the hell out of me. As time went on, resi after resi, silent hill being the king,,,,they stopped scaring me. I still can get a bit of a chill playing Silent Hill, but the good old days are gone I am afraid.

Now looking at my bank statements gives me the real horror experience.

I find if you play slow and check everything out it's easier to get scared / shocked because the mood really sinks in.

If you rambo from level to level and have music playing then the experience is totally different.

I was agreeing with you completely, until that one sentence. Silent Hill (from the first installment on) may no longer scare me, but sill has the power to completely freak me out (except Homecoming, that was just silly).

Dude, the game gets pretty predictable after about an hour. "ooh, theres a inconspicuous vent over there, oh look, no steam! I'll just go over there then HOLY MOTHER OF..oh, its just one of those CREEPY LOOKING GUYS WITH THE SWORDS FOR ARMS AND..oh good he's dead. dooo dooo doo, oh look, there's an inconspicuous vent over there, I wonder whats going to happen when I go near it?" or of course, my favorite "Oh look, a giant room with different levels and lots of doors. OH CRAP AN ALARM!"

Note that I haven't read the previous pages so this may have been posted before.

Try taking a quarters break each time you reach a new save point. When you start getting better weapons and different upgrades you'll see that the game stops being scary.

Or you could always put the Benny Hill theme on loop while playing. :D

It's weird, I watch all the death scenes and gameplay for this game and I find it horrific and scary.

But when my friend turns round and laughs out loud at the death scenes, calling the main guy 'paper man' because his limbs keep falling off easily, then it doesn't seem so bad.

But I'm working my way through the Resident Evil and Silent Hill games first before I play this. I don't find those particularly frightening, just exhilarating.

Yeah, you are right. A big reason why penumbra is scary is that you are so helpless. If anything were to happen in the darkness around the next corner, you know just too well that you are most likely going to die or you are gonna have to outsmart someone (something). This adds to the pressure. And it doesnt help that you have no idea what to expect either. In dead space you kinda know what will hit you, more or less.

Play through like a winner: plasma cutter only. That's how I'm running through my first run. I'm really busy with college right now, so I've only gotten through the first two chapters in the past two weeks, but I think it's pretty good for scares. I'm not really a horror game buff, but I wanted to try out the genre and thought this was a good place to start (turning down a game I've been interested in when it was $13 is ludicrous). I know I get really tense and nervous every time I pick it up. New monsters freak my out every time, and I usually unload a whole clip into them (black slashers oh god).

Anyway, like I said before, I'm going through my first run with only the plasma cutter. I feel that using more powerful weapons, like the flamethrower, would make the combat much easier, but the plasma cutter is really good for keeping the horror-factor high. That's the main reason I came to this game; I wanted to experience the horror genre in this game to the full extent, not to play a first-person shooter. Thus far, I'm pretty pleased with the horror it's delivering.

one thing is what I really don't like is why damn monsters attack behind me. I can't even see the damn things. if I pop up map, and can see just like modern warfare 2, I can control more easily. but even though I can pop up the map, enemies are not seen there. anyway, after getting attack, my health bar gets lower than ever. last night I tried to beat chapter 3. I couldn't because damn vacumm area I can have only 60 seconds to escape. yeah, maybe if some of you are really good at playing this ♥♥♥♥, it's easy. but I left this game for a long time after purchase. now I put it back to play. anyway, it's greater game ever I play once again.

Watch a movie at the same time, voice chat with friends online, play with the curtains open on a sunny day, play while at a friends.

All ways to make it less scary. Also, the mindset you go in helps too. Don't go in all focused, *think* you are going to have a fun happy time and suddenly it doesn't make you jump as much :)

Oh please. Enemies jumping out at you is the cheapest, weakest and most derivative horror device. I don't understand why it affects people and why they think it's scary.

It's just a simple, mechanical reaction to sudden movements or unexpected sounds. I love Dead Space, but c'mon. The game empowers you so much that you never feel vulnerable.

An enemy jumps out, you start, then you kill it and move on. Think about the times when you've felt scared in the real world - they were all times when you felt vulnerable. Dead Space is the opposite of that sensation.

If the game gave you 1/4 as much ammo, or the enemies could kill you instantly, then we'd be talking.

That's exactly why I did not upgrade my suit or weapons. IMO it ruined the game, cos you went from being a scared ♥♥♥♥less engineer with no armor and very limited inventory capacity, to a badass Necromorph killing machine.

The first time I upgraded my suit it ruined the scare factor, because then I had a much larger ammo capacity and much more armor. The basic engineer suit has no armor to speak of, so a Necromorph attack will kill you very quickly, and the very limited number of inventory slots means you'll be using melee attacks and running away a lot. The game is A LOT scarier with the basic engineer suit and standard weapons.
