View Full Version : Lower your RAM is a solution?!

Don't get me wrong, I really appreciate that people found a "working" solution to get the game running in Windows >2/3 GB of RAM and tell that here but seriously:
That is NOT A SOLUTION !
The reason I bought Win x64 in the first place was to use more RAM; now I'm supposed to cut it down just to play this single game because of some calculation error? What then? Either live wth 2GB of RAM (and waste the rest) or reboot all the time.
Thats's pathetic...
Do we have any response from Atari? Cause I can't find anything anywhere...

Forget about Atari, you will not have any support from them (They are well known for their cheap follow-up of the games they publish .... sadly :p).
I understand your point of view, especially if you are not at IT minded (I'have been running 64 bits systems for years now, and to limit the system memory for one process is silly, I agree).
The fact is, I did some research for a better solution :
In the Unix world, it's very common to apply some process-based rules to limit system resources for specific programs (not the entire system, which is like chasing a fly with a bazooka )
Knowing that, I was hoping I could do the same on the Windows platforms .... but as far I have searched, such kind of feature is only available for Windows Server platforms :( (it is called Windows System Resource Manager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_System_Resource_Manager))

submit tickets, contact atari, that is the only 'ting one can do...
of course you'll get back 'don't support win 7 64bit' ...

I also agree it isn't a solution, and what kills me is that American Long Haul a trucking game works perfectly under windows 7 64bit. Seems kind of odd to me that a "less advanced game" will run while a more advanced game does not. I guess I should have held onto my P4 3.6 (bought in 2004) instead of giving it away (i7 975 currently). I expect more people will encounter such programs that don't work under a 64bit OS very rapidly, since that is the next step in business and gaming software. Now I know the reason many businesses still run XP or Server 2003, this will only hurt Microsoft in the long run, hell they already pushed back the support date for XP to 2014 when it should have ended this year.

This worked for me when I was trying to play like last year. However I found the interface in AOW is much bigger than I remembered. Too much of a interface, small action view.
Either way was an awesome game back in the day!

Not nice to sell a potentially defective product without any warning whatsoever.
I really hate this on STEAM.

I'm wondering the same thing, if I have to lower my ram each time to play, then the game is worthless to me

Here's a question, if I tried installing the game in XP mode inside Win 7, would that work?

This is no different than going into Best Buy and needing to check system requirements on the bottoms of game boxes, 2001 style. This is right off the Steam Store page for this game: "Supported OS: Windows 2000/XP."
If you bought it and expected it to work on Vista or 7 (especially without doing some research which would have immediately revealed the issue), you've got no one to blame but yourself. Quit trying to blame Valve or Atari because you're mad at yourself.
I agree the current community-offered "fix" is a very poor choice and it sucks that Atari's support for this game is less than ideal, but that's just part of the deal.

You could try use Virtualbox and a copy of Windows XP. When you install the Virtualbox guest tools, there is an option for direct 3d (have to install tools in safe mode to get 3d installed). I've had some luck running other games in it. Haven't tried with this one yet.

I am so very sorry to point this out to you, but there is a WinXP x64 version out there, as previously stated, the RAM is the issue with the game, and as such the game will crash on bootup in WinXP x64 as well. To make this even more clear I OWN a copy of WinXP x64, I USE a copy of x64, and the game does infact not work, because the workstation that is running it has 4GB of ram.
I would have to say that for steams part, there should be a bigass notice sticker on the game saying: "This game is broken" and for atari's part, I think they should crawl down the hole of shoddyness they came from, and get proper programmers that know the ♥♥♥♥ing difference between an int and a bigint.

I have your fix and I just posted it and hope Valve stickies the permenant fix that I found.
Good luck and follow instructions below and you wont need to set mem limits or reboot this is a PERMENANT fix. This is not offical from Atari but doing some reseearch I found the answer and I tested it on my Windows 7 64 bit and its flawless no more runtime error!
Hello I know this game is old however I have the proper fix for this game and the runtime error which is caused by the memory limit. It is seen running X64 editions of windows and the fix is simple AND DOES NOT REQUIRE a reboot and is a permenant fix.
Follow these simple instructions and enjoy the game with a PERM fix and no more rebooting to set memory.
By the way this fix also works for XII Century - Blood of Europe.
I accidently discovered the same fix works for Act of War High Treason by Atari.
1 - Download CFF Explorer (http://www.ntcore.com/exsuite.php)
2 - Run CFF Explorer
3 - Click File -> Open
4 - Search for ActofWar_HighTreason.exe in X:\Program Files (x86)\Atari\Act of War - High Treason (Steasm users go
here - X:\steam\steamapps\common\Act of War - High Treason)
Replace X:\ by the letter in which your game is currently installed in
5 - Once found, go to Nt Headers -> File Header
6 - You will now get the file headers of ActofWar_HighTreason.exe. In there, search for 'Characteristics' (at the bottom) and click where it says 'Click here'
7 - A new window will pop up and all you have to do is make sure that "App can handle >2gb address space is CHECKED
8 - Apply the changes, then go to File -> Save
9 - Enjoy the game in 64bits!
NO MORE SETTING MEM LIMITS AND REBOOTING!
Enjoy the fix.
Good luck
Im lakesideguy on Steam if your looking for a friend.
Ive found many fixes to games that dont run in Windows 7 64 bit.
And so far only one I cant get to work no matter what.
