View Full Version : Lame question: How to change your nickname while hosting?

I've found out that when IWNet picks you as a host, all you have to do is to change your nickname, which forces it to pick another one. I've tried changing my nickname in Steam overlay, but it had no effect until the game was over. Is there some setting I am missing which forces immediate change or am I trying a completely wrong menu?
You see I want to be able to host, sometimes I meet a bunch of fine people I like to play with and I hate to see the party disbanding when IWNet can't migrate lobby when the original host leaves. Unfortunately from time to time my connection goes into creep mode, that's why I can't simply close ports and live with Strict NAT.

From what i see when host migration occurs due to lag, it kicks the old host and when the new host is picked it say that the old host changed his name to that individual that got chosen as the new host.

No, no, it's not like that. I've seen multiple players deliberately changing their nickname to force the change. Sometimes people even ask laggy hosts to rename.

Thats what id like to know as well. I've seen many players too changing their names immediately, therefore picking new host...
On some occasions, i rather leave, because of the flame was, but sometimes would rather stay... So, anyone knows how this works?

Shift + tab
Bring up friends list
Beside your name (or under) you'll see my control panel, Click that
once your Steam page is brought up, go 'Edit my profile' (in the far right part of the screen.
Enter whatever you want it to be. Scroll all the way down to the bottom and click 'Save'

That's how I have always changed My name. I also THINK there is a direct link at the bottom of your friends list.;)

Hope this helped!

Unfortunately, i already know how to change my name, normally.. however just wouldnt do the trick in MW2. You see, even if you do that, it wont change your name until the end of the round, it only gets changed once you are in the lobby.. =(
Thanks for the quick reply anyways ^^

Rep for the best answer...

Sometimes I am fine as host, sometimes I can't host well at all, would love to have a plan like this.

Changing names has nothing to do with hosting or host migration, it's a common misconception. When a host migration occurs, MW2 will announce that the original host "changed name" to the new host's name, but in reality the original host just left and the game migrated to the new host. No names actually change.

This feature you refer to would be the end of competitive S+D, and tactical nukes, ja?

Open the overlay UI and go under settings and you'll see your profile name under the friends tab, change your name in that.

not so. this message with so and so changed name to so and so has nothing to do with the new host. when the host leaves and it migrates it picks a new host. when the old hosts slot gets filled it shows the message even tho someone else had host. so say your host and you and 2 others leave and i get host during migration. 9 people left in server more join. until the spot you occupied gets filled none of these players will get the changed name host. it could be the first person to join or the last one to join which ever slot you had is all.

I thought it was like that too for a while, but no it's not working.
