It does not work for Windows Vista in my experience. According to the forums it hardly works for Windows XP. Steam is unwilling to help and there is no warning that this may be incompatible with modern software.
I logged a ticket. This is what it said:

"I bought this game during the after Christmas sale. I paid $5.09 for this game and it does not work. After I purchased the game and realized that it does not work on Vista 64, I checked the forums for help. Almost everyone is having this same problem... since March 2008. This is a known problem for this game not to work on Vista for over a year and there is no warning before purchasing.
What happens when I launch the game is it opens the menu and gives a list of genres. You select a genre and it gives you a list of games in that genre. When you select a game, it goes to a black screen. There is no sound, and you can't do anything. The only way out is to kill the process in the task manager.
I want this game removed from my Steam account and my $5.09 refunded. Please respond soon."

Atari responded.

"Hello Joshua,

Thank you for contacting Atari Support.

In order to address your issue, please try running your game in compatibility mode.

To configure the compatibility mode for an application please follow these steps.
• Locate the installation directory and right click on the .exe
• Selecting Properties from the menu.
• Select the Compatibility tab

You can choose to run the program in Windows XP, or Windows 95 compatibility mode, whichever seems to allow your game to run most smoothly.

Please keep in mind, this title was never designed or intended to function under Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7. Since this title was not designed to work with Windows Vista or Windows 7 we cannot guarantee functionality. We apologize for any inconvenience this might be causing you to enjoy your game.

To get a refund or exchange, you must return your product to the place that sold it to you. You should check the return and/or exchange policies for the place you purchased the product from and act accordingly. It is a good idea to familiarize yourself with the retailer's policies before purchasing a product as each retailer has their own policies.

Thank You,
Atari Support"

They obviously didn't read what I said. It's digital distribution and can not be returned. I tried their solution though. Same results as last time.

Try disabling the Aero theme, and use the Windows 2000/Win98 theme before running the game. Make sure the Menu.exe app is set to Windows 95 compatibility, in the Steam folder.

Then start a game, say asteroids. If it loads a black screen, press F1 (start new game), then kill the program any way you wish (ctrl-alt-delete, or ctrl-shift-esc). Finally load the game again, it will likely ask if you want to continue where you left off, the game should work fine then.

Well, I can run the game in safe mode. Reboot the computer, then press F8 repeatedly.

When the list comes up, select either "Safe Mode", or "Safe Mode: with networking".

Did the Steam version have the patch? A patch was released for the game. I had to buy it retail since all the digital sites took it down. Works fine in W7 x64 so far.
