Hey, guys. I downloaded CoP, installed it, and clicked launch. I get the screen saying "Preparing to Launch Blah Blah Blah." It'll then disappear, but no CoP. I've launched it 3 times but with no luck and have waited about 30 minutes. Can anyone help?

The same thing happened to me. I restarted my computer and that fixed it.

edit: It seems like it's related to xfire. If xfire is running, the game won't launch.

Same problem here. I tried restarting Steam, restarting PC, running dxwebsetup in the CoP folder (to ensure all necessary DX components get installed), uninstalling CoP benchmark utility (to remove any conflicts), and verifying local cache files. None of those worked, clicking on the shortcut on the desktop and Steam doesn't work, neither running the executable in the game directory or the xrengine.exe in the bin directory.

Any other ideas?

LOL, it's funny cause I really like STEAM. But seeing as how they manage to somehow screw up each STALKER game release, and you wonder why I stick to the retail copy...

In Steam, try going into COP game properties and making a seperate desktop shortcut. Sorry I don't have access to Steam program right now, but I know that option is in there somewhere. Once you have a desktop shortcut, right click, go to properties. Check the boxes to disable Visual Themes and also Run As Admin. Apply this.

Now leave Steam open and click the COP desktop shortcut.

If XRENGINE.EXE is already running in Task Manager, end that process manually before trying to launch the game again.

I tried that as well, but to no avail.

The same for me: it doesn't help.

I'd like to know the computer specs of people with this problem; mine are as follow:

Vista 64 bit
AMD phenom X2
ATI redeon 4870 (drivers 9.11, I'll update drivers later)

I'll wait a little to read here other advices about this issue, then I'll re-download the game (maybe it helps).

My specs are as follows:

Vista 64 bit
Core 2 Duo 2.26GHz
4GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GS 512MB RAM

The other Xray-based games are running fine, including the alpha 1935 build. I think an incomplete download may be the culprit, even though the file integrity checks passed.

I really don't want to re-download it, though.

This happens with the retail version as well. No idea why, but it will false start and XrEngine will be running in task manager (usually around 14-16 megs).

Usually just stopping the process and retrying a few times does the trick.

Yes, that works for me too.
If I enable again that option, the game doesn't start, so I think that it's the cause of our troubles with the game.

Yeah, along with the ingame community feature problem and Fraps, it sounds like a video overlay issue at startup for the new xray engine.

hi i was running pripyat without any problems but noticed when i had fraps running the game would not start but xrengine was running in task manager , after closing down xrengine and then fraps i restarted the game and it worked
i would check what programs you have running in the background as it is possible that one of them may be causing a conflict with the game .

I don't suppose there is an updated version of FRAPS that might solve this is there? I use an older version and have yet to see any issues with any game, even CoP. Fraps 2.31 I think it is. I know 2.3 is old, but it does everything and works great, no problems.

I have Fraps 3.1.1 (just released, you can now unlock the frame rate) and I don't have any problem with it running in background and Stalker CoP.
My troubles are caused by "Enable Steam community in-game" (only with that game).

Here are some things I've discovered whilst attempting to get the game to run. I'm using Win7 64 with an ATI 4850.

The first time I ran the game (from the steam games list) it loaded without any issues. The second time (after I changed some settings) it failed to load - the xrengine was running in the task manager process list but doing nothing.

Running the game from the Steam games list now always fails.

Running Stalker-COP.exe in Steam/steamapps/common/stalker call of pripyat/ also fails.

But ... deleting the file user.ltx and running Stalker-COP.exe from the stalker call of pripyat folder worked for me. I would have thought that user.ltx is an important file and should not be deleted, but it (or some setting in it) seems to be preventing the game from loading.

So, delete (or rename) user.ltx and run Stalker-COP.exe from its folder, and it works - even with community overlay enabled.

When highly in doubt and game WILL NOT RUN, especially when u just made changes to ingame options, deleting the USER.LTX is a good resort. As the game will recreate this file w/ default settings the next time you launch the game. Obviously it didn't like something you chose. It's usually due to the Graphic Render you chose.

ALOT of people also seem to have issues when you have this in common (Stalker, EAX, Vista or Win7). My advise for all Stalker games under Vista/Win7 is to turn off EAX. I don't have issues with COP + EAX under WinXP SP3 32bit. But under Win7 Ultimate 32 & 64bit I did. Which is funny cause I'm using the same XFI drivers I used when I had Win7 RC1 64bit and never had an EAX issue with STALKER games. But then again I always had this issue with any version of Vista.

Fraps, Xfire and Steam Community In-Game all need to hook into DirectX. Most of the time this goes fine, but some games don't like this and will crash or not start at all. Which is why Steam is seriously in need of an option to disable Steam Community In-Game on a per-game basis.

After a bit more investigation, I noticed that user.ltx exists in the _appdata_ subfolder as well as the game root folder, so there are 2 versions of user.ltx.

When I ran the game for the first time, the screemode was set to 1024x768. I changed that to 1920x1080 then quit the game. The user.ltx in the root folder still shows 1024x768, but the user.ltx in the _appdata_ folder shows 1920x1080.

So, it looks like the game created another user.ltx file in the _appdata_ folder and is using that one. It also seems the game doesn't like having two user.ltx files, so deleting the one in the root folder cures the issue for me.

The question still remains though ... why was there a user.ltx file in the root folder in the first place?

Try this, backup the working one to your desktop (somewhere away from Steam/COP folders). Then delete both user files in root and _appdata_ folders and see what happens. Just remember which location works just incase it won't load up again. Then copy or move your backup to that folder location should u have an issue.

In all 3 retail copies, I've only ever seen one copy of the USER file ever be created by the game. And deleting your only one just makes the game create a new one again with default settings. So I see not real harm in giving it a try for Steam's COP.

I baught CoP and didnt have the other previous versions installed anymore cause i allready played them.

So i install CoP...run it...and the problem with X-Ray starts...

Then i downloaded and installed the previous versions and now they all dont run aswell...and also end with failure of loading.
Me having to manually close the loading screen, and then i get the message of the xray doesnt work...

Should i install Xray manually from somewhere or change my version of DirectX? Its 10.1 atm.

Using Vista 64bit - Nvidia GTX260 - P5Q asus mb and plenty of RAM.

All my other games work...just Stalker...and i tried all of the things people mentioned in these and other threads...

I don't think all those having problems here have low specs as this only means that the game would run bad. But it doesn't start at all which is nothing normal.

And if there are soooo many fixes out there, why don't you link them and help those wo need them here? ;)

I've been having the same problem-game just won't launch. After tinkering with it about four hours, I've given up for now. I avoided the STALKER series because of how buggy most said they were, but picked up CoP 'cause it was supposed to be much more stable. I also got Clear Sky for the loyalty promo, and despite it seeming to be regarded as the most glitchy one of the trio, it's been running perfectly well for me...there's some irony :p

It's definitely not my laptop. The only games so far it couldn't play were Crysis and MW2 on high settings. All of the other games I play on extreme settings without any lag, glitch, or bug. This is definitely a problem with the game itself.

FYI it's because the steam overlay attempts to hook with the splash screen and not the game, Xfire already patched itself to hook correctly. Gonna be another 3+ weeks before Valve gets around to changing their hook, if ever.

Also lovely bluescreen every 60 minutes... just like in Clear Sky!

I had the same issue, but I found out that this game may search for OpenAL audio devices a bit differently. In my case, I had a remnant DLL file left after uninstalling my motherboard's onboard audio solution. It was a SoundMax device, so I renamed the "adi_oal.dll" extension located in my Windows System32 and SysWOW64 folders so OpenAL based games will not try pointing to it.

I hope this helps someone who has tried everything else.

Well, I changed it to "wrap_XXX.dll". Wonder if it does anything. I'm also trying to run the game in another language when it's done updating to that language.

That will not work.

The "wrap_oal.dll" file is for generic hardware and generic software OpenAL devices, while "OpenAL32.dll" seaches for all availble OpenAL devices installed on your machine. These are also found in the game's folder. The latter DLL can cause issues if it is searching for problematic OpenAL devices in your System32 and/or SysWOW64 folders.

So don't change anything then?

So don't change anything then?

My initial comment is for people to consider if they moved from an onboard audio solution to a sound card. Some onboard audio devices will leave their OpenAL host implementation file behind after uninstalling. Therefore, any OpenAL based game that tries to read this file will simply freeze due to the absence of the corresponding device. People have had similar issues with Unreal Engine 3 games, but this game seems to be even more problematic in this regard.

Hopefully when it updates to the new language then it will start working.

In my case I have SoC, CS, and CoP. Since downloading CoP it hasn't run at all, but SoC and CS ran fine. SoC is retail disc, CS and CoP are through Steam. Today when I booted up all 3 will now hang at the splash screen, not just CoP. Using an old trick for SoC I put the "-dsound" option into the SoC shortcut. Now SoC starts up just fine, but CS and CoP still hang. The -dsound addition has no effect on CS or CoP due to something with sound options that doesn't allow any direct sound, they only use OpenAL or some crock I can't remember. So I've narrowed my problem down to something with the sound drivers borking CS and CoP. I've disabled the ATI HDMI and everything, no xfire, no FRAPS, no Steam In-game overlay. I'm going to keep fidgeting with my sound drivers some more and see if that fixes it. Just a possible hint as to what may be plaguing other people.

ffplayer19
02-14-2010, 01:11 PM
I have the 3 games exact same as you. The splash screen has been coming up for them, have they for you or no?I never waited long enough to see if the actual game popped up.

The problem with it possibly being a sound driver sucks because I'm not good with that stuff at all. Let's see if I can find my drivers and teach myself lol.

You probably read my posts, but what sound solution (if any) did you use prior to your ATI card?

Please go to "Control Panel -> Programs and Features" and tell me how many entries you see with the name "Host OpenAL". If you see more than one, then it may be causing an issue. The game may be trying to read a host for a device that no longer exists, thus causing a freeze.

I only have one mention of Host OpenAl. Host OpenAl (ADI). And in response to ffplayer. Yes, all 3 of the games would hang at the splash screen indefinitely. After adding the -dsound to SoC it runs fine. CS and CoP still hang indefinitely at the splash screen.

MSmith83

I only have one mention of Host OpenAl. Host OpenAl (ADI).

That may very well be the issue; "Host OpenAL (ADI)" is notorious for causing problems with OpenAL based games and is typically a remnant of onboard audio drivers if someone moved onto a card. It concerns me that it is the only entry, so do not uninstall it.

Instead, go to your "Windows -> System32" folder (and SysWOW64 folder if using a 64-bit OS) and look for a file named "adi_oal.dll". Take it out of your folder(s) for the time being and see if the game now starts.

Holy atheist Christ! That worked like a charm, there was a black screen for a while, but I waited patiently and it started up. Thanks smith, you just saved me from yet another day of hassle with this game. SoC, CS, and CoP all now run perfectly fine. Even SoC without the -dsound option.

Check your task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and turn off all the open processes named xrengine.exe, they are the times you have tried to open it and it leaves an open proccess.

From there I turned off xfire and started game. Once ingame, I could go back to desktop and start xfire. If you have the ingame set to dx10, then xfire wont show ingame because the render on xfire is locked on dx9.

Probably won't fix everyone's problem but xfire was definitely the culprit for me.

For me, the game won't even try to run xrengine.exe at all. When I go to steamapps/common/CoP and click on xrengine.exe in the bin folder, I get a 0xc0000005 error. I tried googling it, which gave several suggestions and I tried all those without luck.

Best part is, I tried being supportive, bought Clear Sky first (even though I have a retailcopy) and then bought CoP. I'm pretty good with pc's and as a last resort I tried using a restore point. No luck though. Only thing I got left to try, is a complete reinstall of Windows 7. Win 7 isn't the problem, dozens of my other apps are though :(

Hello

I'm from Australia and just got the game last night, played it for about 10 minutes then turned off as I had to head off to bed etc... Today I came back home, turned on the PC, launched the game but what happened? Nothing... the game showed up in the processes with like 9mb ram usage and no CPU usage... totally nothing happened... not even a splash screen... like I never turned on the game...

Anyone know whats going on?

I tried to "Verify integrity of game cache", and it said that 96 files failed to validate, and it is updating. It seems like it is downloading a hell of a lot data, baceause I started 15 min ago and it is only at 5%.
By the way: I paused downloading the game several times. And because it didn't stop dowloading (???) I just deleted it (you see I was playing counter-strike). Anyway: this morning I returned to update and it started at 25%! So deleted or not?
I also tried to run the two tools this game downloaded (loyalty check or something like that). I don't have xfire or fraps, tried EVERYTHING you guys mentioned, and nothing worked.

Update: The new F-secure firewall conflicts with Stalker CoP apparently in same way as Fraps and whatever other programs that have been listed in this thread.

The update came a few days ago (i only installed it this morning, from where the game stopped working). If I turn F-secure off completely, the game starts fine. If it is on, it gives error code 51 and fails to start. I tried turning off all elements in F-secure (Program control, firewall, everything!) one by one, checking if the game would work each time. Nothing helped.

So, what to do? Get a different firewall or play without one seems to be the only solution?

EDIT: I found the fix for this through the same problem in Fallout 3. The solution is here: http://www.f-secure.com/en_EMEA/support/knowledgebase/article-details.html?id=14974 :)

Some history with me and STALKER games, and "engine" failure at launch, all on Steam,:-

I got SoC and it wouldn't start, fixed by adding "-dsound" to launch options.

I got Clear Sky, and same problem, fixed by deleting "...steamapps\common\stalker clear sky\bin\OpenAL.dll".

I got CoP and it came as no surprise to me that it wouldn't launch.

MSmith has posted about two pages back in this thread, and believe me, he knows what he is talking about.
The problem is with sound files. That is what GSC advised me when I had the problem with Clear Sky.

I have just launched Call of Pripyat by renaming "adi_oal.dll" in both System32 and SysWOW64 !!!!

Having this same problem. CoP will not launch, no splash screen, and the xray engine process wont even start, the steam overlay appears and says it is launching game, but noting happens.

I dont have any of the conflicting programs that previous people have mentioned, no FRAPS or Xfire. I have not switched audio cards. I have disabled the in-game steam option under the community settings.

I guess I'll have to use the razor1911 release, because this is not working- and so far this is the only game which I am having problems with.

ARGH! - Okay I am an idiot, I found the reason my game .exe wasnt launching was because I had -nointro in the launch options, which apparently isn't a command in CoP because I removed it and it will launch now, I also re-enabled the steam in-game overlay.

I got this problem myself now. Been playing the game for over 15 hours with NO trouble, but today I found out that it was possible to click "Advanced" in the graphic options. BIG mistake. I maxed it all out (I have a fairly robust computer that should be able to run the game maxed out just fine, I had it at max in the basic options too), and now the game just won't start. I'm having the same symptoms as you guys. I don't currently have Fraps installed, but i do have Xfire. HOWEVER, I've been playing the game with Xfire running in the background for the entire time, with no trouble. Same with Steam Community In-game. @MrJenssen
All you have to do is find and delete the game's USER.LTX file.
Then re-launch the game and it will load with all the default settings.
If you don't know what you're doing, don't use the ADVANCED options.
Although it should be pretty self-explanatory as to what they are and do.

You may have listed this somewhere before, but can u plz list your system specs.

To further help launching the game properly, close out any background tasks/programs, even Steam Community or Xfire. Once in the game normally, ALT+TAB (or CRTL+ALT+DEL) back to desktop (or task manager) and then launch any 3rd party apps you wish to run. The issues with Xfire (and some other apps) in not a STALKER game issue, it's a Steam issue.

MrJenssen
09-16-2010, 09:25 AM
Yeah I found that out now. The problem is that I HAD deleted the User-file, it's just that there are two of them, one in the main game directory, and one in the folder where you will find the SavedGame-folder. I deleted that one, and the game booted up without any problems. I tried to boost everything back up but this time NOT checking HBAO (HDAO is default, HBAO is the higher setting), and the game still is running fine. It seems the HBAO-setting was what killed it for me. But it's working for me now, I found it out on my own (yay!) but if I hadn't, then your reply sure would have helped. Thanks a lot. :)

And to all of you who are having a similar problem, remember to delete THE CORRECT User.ltx-file (or both of them just to be sure). :)

Edit: As a side-note, it is worth mentioning that the game runs fine (for me) with both Xfire running AND Steam Community activated.

Ok so if your running ATI's crappy drivers you have to Disable catalyst A.I. then you can run the game maxed out with no problems. However you will not be using Xfire when you do that so dont exspect a high FPS game.

There should be a sticky!
When you install any STALKER games from STEAM, there is already a USER.LTX file in your Steam apps folder under the Stalker install folder, delete it before playing the game and u most likely won't have any issues.

That and double-checking to make sure your FSGAME.LTX is properly filled out and pointing to correct folders.

Fraps and Xfire should be off before you launch any of the STALKER games.
They can used normally, just launch them after your game has launched.
Open Task Manager and leave it open, to make ALT+TAB back to desktop easier.
Then launch other programs you want to use after having launched STALKER.
Overall, it's best to close any programs your system does not require. This cuts down on alot of STALKER launch issues.

Instead, go to your "Windows -> System32" folder (and SysWOW64 folder if using a 64-bit OS) and look for a file named "adi_oal.dll". Take it out of your folder(s) for the time being and see if the game now starts.

For months I've had issues with this game. Never been able to launch it once. Today I decided to find a solution and this fixed it! My onboard audio caused hard locks in games so I invested in a Xonar DX. I had that file you mention laying around, renamed it and the game launched instantly. Amazing, thank you.

Guys, I have tried everything in this entire thread. 3 months and never got into the game, I just see the main menu, select new game, choose any difficulty, and it stays on the loading screen.

What happens to me is my quad-core gets the first CPU locked up 100% with no activity on the other 3 CPU's. I endd up waiting for however long (10 seconds to 20 minutes) and all the time I gotta hit ctrl-alt-del to leave the game and shut off the XRay engine. This has made me so mad, and I'm not certain if it is Steam or the developers of Stalker that did this but I want my money back and I know I won't ever get it.

Bump, anyone got any suggestions that doesn't involve audio drivers I never had and Xfire or Fraps which I don't use? I really want to play CoP and can't, I am considering buying the version from Gamersgate where I got Clear Sky but I want to exhaust all options ONE LAST TIME before I do so.

Not sure what your issue really is. From looks of it you just experienced long load times. Have you let it finished loading a game to see weather it works, crashes, or what? I don't see your issue.

What as your system specs & OS?

The obvious things to try with Steam version is turn off Steam Community and setup Steam and STALKER games to run as admin.

tb87670
04-13-2011, 05:23 PM
I did disable steam community, tried the admin deal, no go. I am running Win7 64-bit on 2.6quad AMD with an Nvidia 250GTS. 5GB ram,, tons of HDD space, 1440x900 widescreen.

Also I typically alt-tab out after a few seconds once I notice the freeze, several times now I let it run load for 20 minutes before I have out, once I gave it an hour. So, essentially, yes I did let it 'load' but it never actually did, it just freezes at the loading screen before the intro movie. Constantly. For 3 damned months.

Welp, I'm game if you are.

Have you ever successfully got Steam CoP to launch?
Even just one time?

Can you get to the options screen and then back to the main menu successfully?

Have you tried to start a new game using a much lower resolution?
If you did, what happened?

tb87670
04-13-2011, 08:27 PM
What happens, I load the game up, in the main menu. From there I can change options, change resolution, some things tell me I need to restart the game for changes to take effect. Regardless of the many settings I have tried I can get the main menu fine.

Where this breaks down is when I click new game. I choose any difficulty, then the background music loops for about 3 secs, screen goes black, then it goes to loading screen with blue bar at bottom showing load progress. That is where I am stuck, and no matter how long I wait (10 seconds to 1 hour) it stays exactly there and never goes into the game.

KarlMonster

So, you have never, ever, successfully started a new game?

Have you tried starting the game in a low resolution?
(may require running CoP in a window rather than full-screen)

Its possible that the X-ray engine cannot resolve the game with your settings.
Also, this is not required, but I wonder; would you post a screenshot of your task manager's list of processes?

Like this (http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l273/karlmonster/Screenshot-4_15_20111_46_52PM.jpg).

The resolution makes no impact, same issue as above. As I said earlier I tried all the settings possible in the advanced menu, same issue. My task manager shows up the XRay Engine soaking up 900,000+ memory while the game is in the frozen state.

I have all 3 parts. SoC and CS worked fine on Steam back in the day they came out. No problems with Xray or anything.

Now i purchase CoH and not one of the 3 works anymore. All get stuck on the loading pop up, and after a few minutes i have manually close the loading screan and it gives the error Xray doesnt respond.

I tried every option given above...but no joy...

Anyone have any idea what i can do still?

SoC runs if I put in the -dsound command in the launch options.

CoP doesn't though, I tried everything in the thread(so far), no dice. But SoC works with that option for me.

I know i probably sound like a complete noob, but what is 'Fraps' and how do you disable it :P

Jashin

Fraps is a separate program for FPS count, taking screenshots, and recording videos. If you don't know it then you don't have it.

You could've googled that.

I renamed the "adi_oal.dll" extension located in my Windows System32 and SysWOW64 folders so OpenAL based games will not try pointing to it.

THIS DID IT! Thanks!!

I do have SoundMAX integrated audio as well as an ASUS Xonar sound card.

I think the game was working with just the SoundMAX way back before I got the ASUS, but I guess the game doesn't like having both. Changing the default windows sound device or changing the USER.LTX to "snd_device Generic Software" did not help, it still hung. After I renamed the DLL's however, it stopped looking for the SoundMax devices and just runs!

Only thing, I'll probably forget about restoring those DLLs next time I want to use the SoundMAX again.

SoC runs if I put in the -dsound command in the launch options.

CoP doesn't though

I think I heard that's because CoP doesn't have a DirectSound option at all. Your problem is likely still with sound, check my above and MSmith83's posts...

launched the game but what happened? Nothing... the game showed up in the processes with like 9mb ram usage and no CPU usage... totally nothing happened... not even a splash screen...

There seem to be several different problems with launching CoP, but this one is the easiest.

When you don't get the splash screen, just kill the xrEngine.exe process and try again, I ususally get it like 50/50.

I closed FRAPS
i closed XFire
I closed Avast (antivirus)
I closed OutPost (firewall)
I have deleted "team\steamapps\common\stalker call of pripyat\user.ltx"
I desactived SoundMax
I have uninstalled SoundMax

I have the Spash screen, but the game crash before launch :
