View Full Version : 15.4gb?

Is it just me or is there realistically not 15.4gb of content in this game? Seems like something is amiss with the file size being so huge, poor optimization or what?

Nope thats the file size. Gears1 is around 15 +GB, FEAR2 was 11+ I think. Games have really gotten big in size due to the textures/graphics i would assume. God only knows what "Rage" will finally end up being. DL-ing will be a week long affair even with high speed connections!

I wonder that about a lot of new games.
Based upon what they provide, the total file size seems well over the top. I also wondered on the optimization.
Brings up an old conversation with a programmer many years ago where they had to optimize so hard and how he felt that the new programmers did not really care nowadays.
Does make you wonder.

That seems sort of ridiculous to me. Mass Effect 2 is only 10gb, even Aion is only 12.5gb and that's a gigantic MMO with beautiful graphics.
Something seems fishy to me, like they are using poor coding or something. The 360 version of the game comes on one disc and those discs don't hold more than 8.5gb.

I don't quite understand it either. 3 very short campaigns consisting of mostly repeated assets and a small handful of multiplayer maps takes up more space than Mass Effect 2 with its much larger world and incredible amount of voicework? Really?

What is really strange is that the box for AvP says only 4.6 GB of hard drive space is required. Someone dropped the ball when putting those on there.

Only ♥♥♥♥ty console ports take up that much HD space or poorly optimized low budget games like Dreamkiller (10 gigs).
Games like Turok, Stranglehold, Blacksite: Area 51, The Last Remnant, etc are about 15 gigs installed but have absolutely nothing to show for it.
Both Crysis and Crysis Warhead are 6 gigs a pop.
Shattered Horizon is only 2 gigs.
These games feature state of the art graphics. AvP has 6 maps all of which are re-used for multi and the campaigns.
Lack of texture compression and optimization and you get this result.

You have in a sense two copies of the game installed For DX9 and DX10/11, something to do with the textures from what I understand.

The executable sizes are irrelevant - it's the map data that takes all the space - the numbers...
Total 15.1Gb
Envs 78.8% 11.9Gb
FMV 10.9% 1.6Gb
Sounds 6.4% 986Mb
Characters 3.0% 466Mb
FMV is full motion video I presume.
Inside "Envs" are folders:
Ruins (2Gb),
Lab (1.9Gb),
Refinery (1.8Gb),
Jungle (1.8Gb),
MP (1.8Gb),
Pyramid (1.2Gb),
Colony (1.2Gb),
P00_Tutorial (342Mb)
Inside these are 4 main big files each e.g. Ruins:
M04_Ruins.pc (552Mb)
P04_Ruins.pc (541Mb)
A03_Ruins.pc (462Mb)
Ruins.pc (413Mb)
...more small files
I assume M is map, P is don't know?, A is audio? Don't know if they are in some compressed format but maybe not for speed of loading sake...

M is Marine, P is Predator, A is Alien... so they are not just the same maps with different triggers but saved as entirely new maps.
But seriously, who cares? Most HD movies are 15 gigs, we live in 2010 and a GB is NOT that much. My Steam Folder shows roughly 70 GB and I am still thinking "meh, still got 1,93 Terabyte of space outside of that folder and it only cost me 100€"...

That's a wrong assumption on Mass Effect, because if you look at amount of poligons used in level design and textures then you can see they are quite simplistic. It's a very good engine and the way effects are used make it visually rich. The fact that game universe and emergence in it created by developers makes it feel as a real world doesn't mean that everything in it is huge and it necessarily has to use 20+ gb of your hard drive. :)
I don't think there's anything fishy or suspicious about Xbox having smaller size game. Platforms all have one set of textures and run the same on every console of one kind. Whereas PCs have changable resolutions and most importantly texture quality. That all requires resources, every texture quality is an amount of visual files and there are at least 4 separate on overall level.
And this is a superficial view on things based on my logic only, I guess anyone who has worked with the graphical files, animation and design should know more.

The game is actually 5 gigs. The other 10 gigs is prepackaged DLC that will "unlock" on your hard drive once you buy it again.

Some people have isps that severely limit their bandwidth. And when the game ♥♥♥♥s up and you have to do a reinstall, or you rage delete it, another 15 gig download is a rather big turn off. Especially when you consider you are really down loading the game twice when you will only ever play 1 version of it. It's sloppy no matter how you spin it.

It its true that the Direct X 11 version is different an were basically installing the game twice then it makes sense.
But I wouldn't be surprised if its just poor optimization. Since there are custom campaigns for Left 4 Dead for example that can be a gig or two in size.

I started work on optimising the texture files last month .. and after about 2 weeks i had a try importing them..
each texture should have been optimised but clearly it wasnt done, Biggest problem is that the game checks the files and well crashes at any point i tried to add my textures .. this game is a carcrash of console ♥♥♥♥e ..
to cut a long story short i quit trying .. the game is so ♥♥♥♥ed that without modtools theres nothing anyone can do but wait on rebellion or sega leeching more money out of us all to get it fixed..
