Bad Company 2 has a manual setting for Field of View. This setting is for the VERTICAL FOV. http://forums.electronicarts.co.uk/battlefield-bad-company-2-pc/920243-we-gots-our-fov-setttings-thnx-ea-2.html#post12980213

The horizontal FOV will adjust depending on your desired Vertical FOV and your screens aspect ratio. Here is a handy tool to determine the Vertical FOV you want.

/Edit 2

There seems to be some confusion amongst people that don't want to read. The FOV you enter into the calculator is your desired horizontal FOV. The result the calculator gives you is what you enter into the settings.ini

http://rjdown.co.uk/projects/bfbc2/fovcalculator.php

To edit your Field of View find your settings.ini and either add or change

Fov=number

Example.

Fov=84

Simple.

Thanks for this.

I've never adjusted my FOV before, but I understand the use of doing so.

What's a good FOV to start with for a 2560x1600 monitor?

Kyorisu

It really depends on your personal tastes. Try anything from 80 to 110 Horizontal. The default vertical is 55 which is 79 horizontal for your aspect ratio.

LCD? You should run everything at your monitors native resolution. Pixels on a LCD are fixed so if you pick a resolution other than native things aren't going to look as intended.

I played beta with wider h-fov. I had to play with black border on top & bottom for that. Does retail version do the same? I can't tell that from the screen shots.

Oh yeah thanks OP for posting this. +rep for sharing

Too bad the gun placement is totally wrong. The only 'real' FOV ajustment is the guy with tripple monitors had. His gun and HUD were in the center, while his horizontal FOV increased a damn lot. That's the way it supossed to be... Weird.. But still, I'm happy with anything.

From testing it seems a FOV between 65 to 75 is the most natural one, when putting it on 90 you will get tunnel vision....

"90" comes from a standard setting for H-FOV.

This works out between 65 and 75 in V-FOV's

So using this calculator....
If I want 75, which a few people recommend on a 1680x1050, I would enter "52" in the settings.ini? Or do I just enter 75?

Default is "55", so if I enter "52" like the calculator says, I would actually be lowering my FOV?

Yes you would be lowering your field of view. You want higher than 75 HOR. Now a Vertical FOV of 75 would give you 100 HOR which is much better.

They are recommending you use 75 vertical you see.

K. I actually had to go with 101 at 1680x1050 to get 75 via the calculator. Is the calculator a little off? Should I just use 100?

You're doing it wrong.

The number that you type in is what you WANT the horizontal FoV to be.

So type 90 into the field (along with your resolution) and it will tell you what to place the vertical FoV at.

90 = 65
100 = 74.

That is what I was saying, he said 100 should of equaled 75, but the calculator is telling me 74.

I noticed in several of the FOV comparison screenshots that the aiming reticles on the guns remained constant, regardless of FOV.

Doesn't this mean either that (a) you are less accurate witha a higher FOV (targets are smaller on your screen, but bullet spread remains the same) or (b) the aiming reticles are inaccurate (and actually the bullet spread is less than the visual indicator)? Either way there is a problem.

What am I missing?

Freyar

My assumption is that it's merely an indicator, and not an actual "accuracy" mechanic.

thejaga
03-02-2010, 02:44 PM
But notice that the spread increases and decreases as you move, crouch, etc. It is at a minimum directionally accurate. Thus, to the extent it remains constant after you switch FOV, it at a minimum becomes less directionally accurate as you alter FOV.

At worst, the reticle accurately reflects bullet spread at default FOV, which means that at non-default FOV, the game inaccurately reflects bullet spread via the reticle.

Here are the results for 95 degree VFOV:

4:3, with 95deg. VFOV, HFOV = 111deg.
16:9, with 95deg VFOV, HFOV = 125deg.
16:10, with 95deg VFOV, HFOV = 120 deg.

It means your weapon and hud elements aren't scaled down when you use a higher FOV setting.

the only way to scale your weapon and hud down is to use a wider screen or a custom desktop resolution, if your monitor/graphics card supports it.

Here is 1920x1080 @ 95 Hor FOV

http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/7985/fov6495.jpg

Here is 1920x884 @ 95 Hor FOV

http://img169.imageshack.us/img169/9307/custom95.jpg

using a custom res desktop of 1920x884 will give the game a letterbox effect but will scale down your weapon and hud accordingly.

Use that calculator, plug in your horizontal and vertical res and the desired Hor FOV setting, the number it spits out is what you want to put into your settings.ini file.
