Has hearing about Portal 2 got you craving for some sweet portal action? Can't wait for Portal 2? Try one of these:

Indie Games
Narbacular Drop (https://www.digipen.edu/?id=1170&proj=501) (Custom Levels (http://www.jeepbarnett.com/narbaculardrop/community/custommaps/), easy to use ND Level Launcher (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=5c33cdc8f8abd196ab1eab3e9fa335ca31ed835f 2564200a))
The original game that started it all.
ASCII Portal (http://cymonsgames.com/asciiportal/)
A 2D game that allows you see through portals, bringing back the classic feeling of disorientation.
Portal: The Flash Version (http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/portal.php) (instructions (http://portal.wecreatestuff.com/))
One of the first fan remakes, and still one of the best.
Tag (The Power of Paint) (https://www.digipen.edu/?id=1170&proj=1506)
Not a portal game per se; it's a prototype of Portal 2's new paint gameplay mechanic.

Major Portal 1 Mods
The Flash Version Map Pack (http://portalmaps.wecreatestuff.com/)
It's the Portal remake of the Flash remake of Portal- got that? Anyway, Valve liked it so much that they released it on the 360 as 'Portal: Still Alive'.
Portal Prelude (http://www.portalprelude.com/)
It's loved by some and loathed by others, but everyone agrees it's one tough pack. Get through it and you're a Portal Master. Or Masochist. I forget which.

Portal 1 Level, Mod & Map Pack Collections
FPS Banana (http://www.fpsbanana.com/maps/games/296)
Some great maps live here, including Remmiz, Ren's Tests, Jordesh, and the Flash Map Pack.
Mod DB (http://www.moddb.com/games/portal/mods?filter=t&=Search&kw=portal&released=def&style=def&theme=def&type=def)
When mere levels aren't enough, try one of these mods.
Portal Game Maps (http://www.portalgamemaps.com/index.cfm?pg=1&sort=3&sid=38)
A decent list of maps.
Strategy Informer (http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/mods/portal/mod/category1657.html)
Has some of the bigger mods, including Project Beta, (the insane) Prelude, and a multiplayer mod
My Aperature Labs (http://myaperturelabs.com/viewfiles.php?o=rating&desc=y)
A good list of almost 200 maps.
Fileplanet's Portal Maps (http://www.fileplanet.com/107938/0/0/0/1/section/Unofficial) and Mods (http://www.fileplanet.com/109596/0/section/Mods).
A small collection with some somenoteworthy maps and mods not found elsewhere. ~thanks, pixartist.

Portal Mods for Other Games
I haven't tried these. Take care.
Craftable Portal Gun (http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1032&t=215961) (Minecraft)
Portal Wrench (http://prey.filefront.com/file/The_Portal_Wrench;65724) (Prey) ~thanks, trenmost.
Portal Gun (http://ut2004.titaninternet.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=8866) (UT2004)
Portal Mini-mod (Gmod) (apparently it no longer works)

They are all too easy or ridiculously too time consuming. Make valve like ones you lazy mappers!

I must just be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but I can't get out of the first room in Narbacular Drop (and all the portal images are showing up as huge glitches?) - landing on any object throws me off the side, and once I got to the door thing, it did nothing. Imprisoned the hyperactive lizard though.

Oh, and TAG won't install - says corrupt file or something.

Will try those Portal maps when I finish wading through homework.

EDIT: These boards won't let us say "r e t a r d e d" ? Wtf?

@Ling what's your OS and system specs? ND was written before Vista, so it may not run on newer machines. As for Tag, scan and defrag your harddrive, then purge your browser cache and try downloading it again.

Portal: Prelude was a huge disappointment in my opinion. The creator was incredibly rude and egotistical. The game focused entirely on trying to pull off near impossible maneuvers for ridiculously long periods of time instead of creating thought provoking puzzles which is what Portal was all about, Portal:TFV was much better in my opinion.

EDIT: Linked your list in my Portal 2 guide (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1177232), this is pretty useful for people looking for something to play.

Prelude sucked.

Download the Flash Version Map Pack (http://portalmaps.wecreatestuff.com/); introduces quite a few new game mechanics that are easy to grasp, yet fun and game changing. The puzzles are generally hard to solve, yet don't rely solely on pulling off impossible maneuvers. It gets my seal of approval (http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/6237/sealofapproval.jpg).

I'm torn on Prelude.

I was able to get through it without any help save one chamber (youtubed the answer to Chamber 9). So it can't be too terribly hard, right?

It had aspects of interesting story and levels. But I would not want to play it again.

Whereas Portal chambers I can play over and over, the thought of spending a lot of time in Prelude challenge chambers nearly gives me a panic attack. I can't explain it :)

I played Nabacular Drop and ascii portal. asci got really confusing and I wasn't sure what to do at lvl 8. Nabacular drop was an odd game, very interesting seeing it and comparing with portal. However was mine glitched? It ended at Fire with Fire saying I win and credits rolled and nothing to do. It was boring but what do you expect? I gotta say none of it compares to Portal, and I hope Portal 2 is just as good!

However was mine glitched? It ended at Fire with Fire saying I win and credits rolled and nothing to do.There was supposed to be a boss monster that threw fireballs at you, which you'd re-direct back at him (just like the end of Portal, really), but they ran out or time.

I own the Hp compaq dc5750 microtower. got it last year, i thought it had a good graphics card (it can play runescape HD fine)

Just finish playing the Tag game and that was fun. In all honestly and imo a much more polished game than Nabacular Drop is. ND was more like a concept and Tag more like a short retail arcade game. If they plan on merging this paint with the portal gun and they do it right there are going to be some totally awesome puzzles ahead in P2.:D:D:D

Well, actually, they just added it to the core game as 'Portal: Still Alive'

Meh.

Just beat Flash Mappack last night. Beat Prelude a few weeks ago.

I think I may play the normal one again, but this time with the cheat on where I can create portals on anything. Of course it'll make the game R♥t♥rdedly easier, but also offer me new solutions to old puzzles.

Edit: Also, I think I should just take a few days off. I was pulling into my driveway today, saw the garage door stuck off the ground just a few inches, and thought "It's alright, I can squeeze a portal under that"

Another ND 'cheat' is that the portal gives you a small boost in momentum when you use it. Put both sides on the floor, jump in, and you'll get higher and higher each time you fall through.

The Flash Version mappack for the real game is awesome. I got a bit into it before this semester classes started / my GPU's heat death, and some of the new things that they pretend they're going to murder you with in the first few chambers are so fun.

Portal: Prelude is cool.
It links up at the part where you must install the final core, which she mentions in the first portal.
The puzzles are hard. Although might not know it, the voice actors are computer (ya type in a word and the computer says it)
Find that pretty funny, it's still fun, ending is the best part to play, although some puzzles are very frustrating.

Yeah but do they have to be in the same folder as Narbacular Drop or do I just have them and do that^

v.dog
05-23-2010, 02:57 PM
Both. They need to be in the levels subfolder, and you'll need that command to launch them, unless there's a .bat file or laucher exe.

Actually- this will make your life easier: Download my Narbacular Drop Level Launcher (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=5c33cdc8f8abd196ab1eab3e9fa335ca31ed835f 2564200a) to your Narbacular Drop folder, then attempt to open the cmf file you want to play. When it asks you what program you want to use, browse for the nd launcher.exe.

Once that association has been made, all you'll have to do in the future is double click on the level :)
