View Full Version : So I tried using a joystick for flying in BFBC2

And it was a lot more difficult than flying with mouse.
Not to mention the yaw control on the stick seemed to be completely backwards - Rotating stick left would make the heli yaw right. Could've prolly fixed that by using some joystick tuning app but meh.
So, unless you already own a joystick, or have money to spare, my recommendation is don't go buying one without trying.
(note: I didn't. Borrowed someone else's)

I have a joystick in my closet of my old room back at my parents house...the plug is not put into the back of computers any more...this is how all joysticks should be...if you have bought a joystick recently all i have to say is: seriously?
the heli controls really aren't that complicated in this game...I can't see a joystick making it easier even if it worked 100% correct.

For those flying with a joystick and finding there inputs are reversed
Head to: C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\BFBC2\input open air.dbx with a text editor and search for the following: IDA_Axis1Y Where the <ScaleValue> directly following this line change its value from 1 to -1.
Also applicable if your X axis is inverted also!

You can invert it in the options menu.
Unless you're talking about inverting something else.

I felt that I do way better with joystick due to the high mosue sensitvity I use. the backwards yaw is really bad, and how analog is inputed is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ in this game, you can't set the the actual direction, just the axis and it's up to the game to figure out which way is which.

like the other guy said, you need to edit your config file or find one for downloading. have no idea why this hasnt been fixed since launch.
Joystick is way better for flying (and even for movement!) but the game inverts some axes that it shouldn't, and it's really annoying. The throttle, for example, is reversed on mine.

the thread your in, read it.
Simple fix:
1. Open Documents\BFBC2\Input\air.dbx with Notepad
2. Search for the string ConceptYaw
3. Below it look for this section:
<instance guid="EC8ED584-471E-473F-A0A7-865B5C15A6FF" type="GameSharedResources.PadInputActionData">
<field name="IsAnalog">true</field>
<field name="NegateValue">false</field>
<field name="Axis">IDA_Undefined</field>
<field name="NormalizeInput">false</field>
<field name="ScaleValue">1</field>
<field name="UseSquareInput">false</field>
<field name="Button">IDB_Undefined</field>
<field name="Pov">IDP_POV_Undefined</field>
</instance>
4. On the line <field name="ScaleValue">1</field> change 1 to -1

My x52pro works like it should in BC2, but only when I enable a profile through the SST software. The helicopters are a wreck though and never respond as they should, atleast not when comparing it to DCS Black Shark, but I guess that's because they were developed for mouse flying.

I find flying with pure keyboard is the best for me.

Yeah I don't actually care about the solution. The fact that I have to go into a config file to change the axes, instead of having a checkbox in the game or being able to map each direction of each axis, makes it totally not worth it and, as I said, annoying.

I had to disable or actually set it to one of my keys I don't use on the joystick and everything works just fine. Flying is much easier with a joystick/keyboard combo

I find the mouse sensitivity in vehicles a little too slow for my liking. As fun as it is swiping my mouse across the desk, lifting it up and swiping it again, four times, just to shoot a target who is behind my tank, it does get tiring after a while. The same goes for helicopters - I can't turn quickly enough.

I agree, I turn my mouse up to 5700 dpi in the tanks.

Why anyone else uses the mouse at all puts me at a total loss. You can't maneuver fully with only one hand on the keyboard. I don't even touch the mouse while flying. Just bind left control as your look around key and use the arrow keys to look around and it works perfect. The only way to fly. Also bind keypad 0 to pop smoke.

This sounds promising. I will try this next time i play.

Not really any reason to spend time on getting good with the joystick in BFBC2. I spent hours flying choppers with a joystick in BF2 and BF: Vietnam and never got anywhere near as good as I am in BFBC2 with KBM. I have no idea why this is, because generally I prefer joystick when flying, but KBM just works extremely well in BFBC2.
Travismofo is wrong. Keyboard-only will always be at a huge disadvantage vs keyboard and mouse because a keyboard press is a linear rate. Holding down the arrow button to turn will always be a fixed rate whereas with the mouse you can swipe to perform quick maneuvers.

Look at this turd of a hacker: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IU9NtObut1s
He starts out looking pretty good and then he starts flying straight backwards in the Apache (1:04). That is not physically possible in an Apache. I'm guessing it's the 'disable auto-leveling' thing he mentions in comments. I don't know if PB detects that as a cheat, but the fact is, if you modify code to make the helicopter no longer fly like a helicopter, that's lame and gay in my book.

Boogeyman it's all about practice. You can still do those things and maneuver well with keyboard only.

It's possible to do this with a joystick, because the joystick does not auto-level. So I wouldn't say it's a cheat; all he did was make his mouse control as if it was a joystick.

That's what the throttle is limited to in this game. It's really annoying not to be able to finely control throttle and altitude, but that's how it is. =/

The magic secret that makes flying with a mouse work once you internalize it:
The mouse is not aiming your cross-hair. It is tilting your helicopter and is closer to using WASD than anything else.

why does anyone use a mouse. Heli's are best flown with WASD and arrow keys.

Helos are best flown with joysticks.
Edit: Forgot to mention that now, not only am I using a joystick for flying, but I am using it for movement! :D I had a Logitech G13 come in the mail, and I've been spending a lot of time trying to get used to using the little joystick on it for movement. It's a steep learning curve, but I think it will be worth it.

I prefer the mouse in this game. And a mouse with OTF sensitivity changing is quite helpful.

joystick is way easier; but that could also be because im an avid flight simmer and real life pilot (though we use yokes).
I just wish i could use my g940 with BC2 :(
BTW: Anyone have it working for the g940? I cant map the throttle or the rudder pedals at all...

+1 I've got a X-52 hotas, I'm a huge flight sim fan, and I still find choppers on BC2 easier to fly with KB+M.
