I need some help with the last mission. i was defending for 45 minutes while trying to build up my army but it keeps getting destroyed. how do i get out of this defensive position? what are good strategies to use? i'm considering to go nuke.

just turtle up with shields and point defence, build shieldtanks for AA. tech to dinosaur exps, you need 2 or more. walk them around with 20 shieldtanks as shield+aa and destroy everything. Also if you look south of your base there is INSANE ammounts of mass to harvest.
I just had a go at it and tried nuking the sheilds (they take 3 nukes each btw) although when i did destroy 1, brackman warned me not to and was like that each time I took a sheild down.
I still havnt finished it but would like to know if theres an alternative to nuking the shields.

Try and establish a front with turrets and shields while fending things off with your ACU to buy you time to build. Once you've leveled a bit, go for megaliths immediately for defending yourself. After that, the only offense you need to use are gunships and soul rippers to hit targets of priority, including the final ACU itself.

I got a few screenshots of me playing on Hard. You can see how my defenses ended up.
Rushing towards shield gen tech, setting up early early PD, branching out to where the AI drops his units. When you are building those PDs you have to either build a couple of AA towers or AA units. The amount of shield generators i had up could easily take the artillery pounding until i literally just built up my own forces. I did this multiple times and every time was different. Sometimes i built artillery just to kill his, mass gunships, mass loyalists etc. It all works you just need proper defense.

Normal mode took only 2-3 soul rippers to win.
I defended my base via spamage of megalith IIs. They are suprisingly long range and deal nice damage in masses.
For hard, you will probably need to folow the above sort of stratergies. You will seriously need to turtle the start. Once defenses are up, even 1 - 2 protobrains will max you prety fast with the ammount of units you kill. As shown in the picture, spam power generators after you cleaned up the back in that area and then use the energy converet to supply you with all you ever need to build defenses and armies.
I reacon 10 soul rippers would handle everything hard has to offer in that mission.

If you take out that forward base then they don't build Artillery.
I completed the mission by immediately teching to mass conversion then to proto brains. Defence was a bit tough before I got out a few megaliths, then it wasn't bad at all.
I think I did the all objectives with < 100 fighters + gunships.

I got to this mission today and I too am wondering: is it possible to win this mission (i.e., kill enemy commander) without blowing up the big shield-power-tower things? I mean, brackman says not to, but you can't capture them or their drone-spawners, and you can't kill wacko-boy without dropping the shield (even if you're underneath it, which is bullcrap).
Edit: the reason I think there is a way is because blowing up the towers is a secondary objective, and I've been able to skip secondaries before.

Reclaim that mass behind your base, build like 3 experimental airfactories, 4 of those experiment airs was enough for me to take out every base one by one...
Defend base with land experimentals, and the repulsor defense tower..that was sweet.
