I could be wrong on the technicalities of this, I dont know how Steam works exactly, but I presume maintenance requires staff to be present - its not automated. As Steam is a US thing, unless they have a night shift doing the work they would have to do it daytime USA. Its easier to sort out any major issues that rise if they have full staff present.

Otherwise im sure they would do downtime nightime US as their biggest market is the US.

Going by that graph, such a sudden drop in users would suggest the reason there are fewer steam users logged in, is because of the daily maintenance they are doing? After a couple of hours it rises fairly dramatically again.

I don't know if you guys have heard, about the 2010 update. They're working the kinks out of it, and applying a few on the old steam.

Of course there is going to be downtime, there's downtime daily. Grow up and go outside, winter is over.

Recognizing that the users are in different time zones, it would make sense to do maintenance at differing times, so that no one time-zone is affected more than others. As for doing it when people are in the office, I'm sure I make a lot less than most of them, and I'll go in at 1am if the store needs me, so they need to suck it up.

1. Steamhas been around for a long time.
2. It wasnt created for MW2
3. Publishers use Steam to boost sales and give people and alternative to buying in stores.

Easy- go with largest concentration of heavy gamers. I think the United States wins that hands down- regardless of how popular its becoming worldwide- sheer number of computers per person here in the states is overwhelming.

And don't reply with "what's night for you is day for someone else". How about we update at night for everyone? You know, push an update at 12 in the UK, then 10 hours later, push the update in NA. Boom, the update is at night.

There's a reason they update everyone at once. Compatibility issues. Boom, goes the dynamite.
