Hi, is it worth upgrading my evga gts 250 to a dx11 radeon 5770 for $160? I run a c2d 8400 3.0ghz and currently get around 30 fps on medium dx9 in bc2. Any thoughts?

Not really. The 250 is already pretty good, and DX11 apparently doesn't add that much more. You would get a performance boost, but only minor. I would wait a year or so before upgrading your GPU.

Better off upgrading that C2D to an i5-750. It should be around €250 for an i5-750. I'd look into that before the GPU but be careful incase your mobo doesn't support the i5.

Upgrading his processor means upgrading his motherboard, RAM, and possibly more. However, it couldn't hurt.
I prefer the i7's to the i5's anyway.

though the 5770 is a great card if all you want is dx11 it isnt worth it.the jump from dx10 to 11 is very very small. not even noticeable in the least bit.so if your running a good dx10 card dont worry your missing nothing.

Your CPU is your bottleneck already. Switching to a low end 5000 series card is not going to do anything for you.
If you want to upgrade, look into getting an i7 set up.

I7 is better of course. And I'm not upgrading whole system till next year. I love bc2, just wondering if this will be a good temporary booster. Don't forget gts 250 is basicaly a rehashed 9800gt

Well, he could go for a quad core. A quad core would be a big improvement i'd say plus you could get one quite cheap(around 100/150) but if he's planning on dishing out on a newer rig for gaming he'd be best to grin and bear with his 30FPS on the C2D untill he finally builds his dream machine.

i5 750 is also a quad, but I agree the other i5s aren't really worth it imo (unless you're doing an HTPC/work computer).

Well I have this:
Asus 5770 1gb Overclocked
E6750 OC @3.2
4gb ram @ 800
1360x768
and get about 40-60fps
everything max besides AA and AAF are x4 and shadow is at medium.

I've been told the i5-750 is a better choice than most i7s as it's cheaper, more OC potential and can game just as well as an i7. i7 is really for editing and other things besides gaming, so if that's what you do then you should look into an i7. For gaming only, save the money and go for an i5-750(Which is a decent quad core) and spend the rest on a better GPU.

Mercchris, that's a very similar setup to mine, minus the oc'ing and 5770.. And your performance is better than mine..comments?
Btw, specs:
Win7 64 bit
500 gig 7200 hd
4 gigs DDR2 corsair ram

Well the 5770 is overclocked pretty decently and so is my cpu, plus my resolution is 1360x768 (smaller than most people)
Whats your resolution at?

bro you could make a AMD build for a bout 700 bucks with a radeon 5870/5850... the AMD Phenom 500 and 600 series MATCH and even beat the I7's.. No joke check the benchmarks when it plays crysis game and other games.

Don't get quad core, get a decent dual with plenty of cache. Your processor at the moment is absolutely fine so this game anyway. I'm using a 5770 (which isn't lower end!)Runs the game very nicely indeed. Good value for money and you wont see the edge that the highest of the 5000 range has over the 5770 until furthur into the future (Crysis 2?!?)

i agree, why build an i5 system for gaming when a phenom II beats it and is cheaper. If you really love the encoding and other cpu activities then go for i5, but for gaming phenom II's are awesome and pretty much on par with i7. Plus they do dual card setups much better than i5's.
Don't get quad core, get a decent dual with plenty of cache.
worst.advice.ever. dual cores have about 6-7 months left of gaming before they are always the bottleneck, and quads cost about £20-£40 more. Quad cores are by far a better choice. You can't argue with the 2 extra cores no matter what you say.

Get your self an after market cooler ....OC your CPU (Careful if you are not sure what you are doing, and don't be afraid to ask for help) 3.8/4.0GHz should be obtainable. See what performance increase you get from that should be reasonable maybe around 10-20%. All for around £20...:\ no brainer IMO
If you still don't see the increase you are looking for grab a 5770 both combined will certainly give you an increase . I would start with your cpu clock speed first though!

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=3619&p=7 actually they are not bad processors to get if you can't afford to get an Intel i7 (the I7s are better). But You won't be disappointed with an AMD, you will be able to play all your games. And also if you look at this video you don't really notice much of a difference in game performance between the two http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLF7w2rh4To&feature=related

4 games on that page and AMD wins in 1 :-P Still.... not bad. Until now, AMD hasn't had an offering to compete with Intel since dual cores were introduced, hence my skepticism.
I actually went looking through the rest of the test results (3d rendering, sysmark, photoshop, etc etc... and Intel beats the snot out of it. So yeah. 1 game :P

My advice as the owner of a new i5-750 and Asus 5850 HD:
Games are now really getting into using the CPU as much (if not more) as the graphics card. This trend will continue in the future and there is alot of potential there. Anybody not on four cores right now needs to consider this in their upgrade path, or you could be very disapointed in a year or two.
I would not upgrade the video without upgrading your cpu. Plan for both at some point in the future, and you will not be disapointed. My final comment would be, for gaming mainly, only go Intel if you are not on a budget. If you are on any kind of budget, save $100-$120 by going AMD (cpu+motherboard costs) and dump the money you saved into your video card purchase (go from 5770 to 5850, for example, with the cash you saved).
AMD Phenom II quad + 5850 is better than i5 + 5700, for example. This is strictly from a gaming perspective and it is what I am advising my friends, brother, and what I will do for my next purchase. The i-series from intel is very powerful, but it just doesn't offer enough superior gaming power to justify the increased cost for both the cpu (say $50-$150 extra), and also a motherboard for it (also $50-$70 extra).
If you are into work related applications, tons of encoding or encrypting, etc... go i7. It will be much much faster than anything else for those "away from PC" power tasks.

Price wise its not bad at all lol. Few frames lower doesn't = totally owning + you won't be able to see much of a difference when playing your games at all compared to the i7s hehe. If you have the money and want max fps possible by all means go for Intel, I am just saying going with AMD is not a bad thing either.

Your input does not consider budget. Most gamers have some budget they would like to spend, be it $1,000 or $3,000. If you go intel quad-core, you are going to spend at least $50 more on the cpu, and perhaps $75 more on the motherboard for an equally good feature/overclocking stable setup.
Therefore the only real question is... 5770 + i7, or 5850 + Phenom II. For gaming, I would think the AMD setup with a better video card is a better use of your gaming $$. If you are not a big gamer, and prefer to encode, encrypt, compile, etc... go Intel i-series.

Indeed, I don't consider budget when it comes to speed... except when it comes to the Radeon 5970. Holy balls that thing is fast but the price? No way...

If you plan on upgrading the CPU and you are strapped on cash then an Athlon II X4 is only around $99 and performs quite well as it is a Phenom II X4 without L3 cache. But the GTS250 is actually the 9800GTX repackaged. If you upgrade to the 5770 you will only see a 30% increase in DX9-10 titles and an extra 30% increase in performance in DX11 titles. The 5770 performs similar to what I am using, the 4870 which is giving me 60-70 FPS with everything maxed but AA is on 4 instead of 16. The 5770 should get around 30% more FPS since the game is DX11

I also second this option.
I have an E8400 and gtx260. Was getting 25-45 fps in dx10 (1280x1024 resolution, medium settings). I OC'ed my cpu to 3.6 Ghz and saw small increase + 5 to 10 for the lower end fps. Now the game is running smoothly between 35-55 fps. I'm happy with it, there's nothing that can improve my gaming for now. Save your money for a six-core CPU by the end of the year.
Check this website for CPU upgrading advice:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-gaming-cpu,2545-7.html
PS: never OC without having good cooling. Buy an aftermarket heatsink that you will also use for future gaming rigs you buy. It's a good long time investment. And if your motherboard is good, you can do the easy way OC, just by raising the FSB to 400 Mhz and the clock multiplier to 9 or above (standard options in most BIOS)

Then overclock it, my q6700 runs at 3.51ghz on air, simples.

I still stand by my trusty dual core (Phenom IIx2 3.2ghz). I can see what your saying 4 is more, 4 is better than 2, heard it many times from friends. I'll let you know in six months if it fails on new games but I have absolutely no issue with any game at the moment. Anyway the point of the thread is about 5770 which i'd fully recommend to anyone.

Just Radeon 5870 is about $459.99 I dont think he got cpu motherboard and memory for 250$
My dad got this system for cheap and it plays ALL games maxed out:
Athlon II X4 630 2.8GHz($99)(yes the poor mans quad...but it works)
Asus socket AM3 motherboard(sorry forgot the name of the one he has)
4gigs DDR3 1333 ram($119.00)

Got the 5770, night and day from gts250. Running on high, oced a little, no as. Going to oc CPU for further performance. The 5770 performs closer to the GTX260 216core, even beat it in certain games, so yeah, it'd be ahead of the GTS250 in performance. Now, slap on a good 3rd party CPU cooler and get that Wolfdale up to 3.5ghz-4ghz, you'll see an improvement in FR as well. BC2 offload audio, physics and AI to the CPU (from what I've gathered), a quad can handle them more efficiently, but a fast dualie can do it about as well. This is one of the reasons why I'd suggested to some, who were looking for advice on new builds a while back, to get a Q9450 (or any quad for the matter) since more and newer games might take advantage of quads with multi-threading. Almost always shot down by others who say a dualie is more than enough, and they'd more or less recommend the CPU you have.
Just FYI, I have a HTPC with a Q6600 @2.7ghz/HD3870 X2/4GB RAM/64bit Win7 HP hooked up to a HDTV doing 1360x768. I can play BC2 just fine with maxed out detail, 2xAA, HBAO enabled (FR's about 50fps on average). Since the Q6600 is more than capable, I can slap on one of my HD5870 in that rig and I'm sure it'll run BC2 @1080P maxed out, 2x-4xMSAA, HBAO enabled. The point I'm making is that a quad, even an old one like my Q6600, is more than capable of running BC2 at a lower clockspeed vis-a-vis a >3ghz E8400.

I got radeon 5770
amd x2 2,41 Ghz OC to 2,51 :)
2 gig of rams
I can run dx10 and i got about 30-50 fps in a good fight with fraps... I tweaked a lot before this result.
But im always the last in game...
finally i will not spend 700$ right now

I'd recommend AMD over Intel to anyone who doesn't want to spend €300+ on a quad core.
€150 for a phenom II x4 955 vs €350+ for an i7.. I know what I'd take, especially since I don't do super intensive video editing and rendering AND the phenom II is compatible with any am2+ motherboard which saves me another €80 on ddr3 RAM memory.

If you dont want to upgrade your whole rig do what I did: got a Q9550, oc'd it to 3.4ghz. Gaming at a steady 75 fps, everything high / on.
Also, you should get that e8400 at 3.6 on stock cooler (I know I did :D )

In the sum of FPS benchmarks on Tom'S Hardware (http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/gaming-graphics-cards-charts-2009-high-quality-update-3/benchmarks,70.html) 5770 has significantly more FPS than the 250, but in single game tests, it's hardly less powerful. So I wouldn't upgrade, it's not worth the ~130$ for such little performance gain.
