These files (I'm somewhat new to Steam - I actually downloaded Team Fortress 2 for the PC a while back when it went for pay your own price, but it never played well in VMFusion on my Mac mini, so I didn't play it much) - anyway, these game downloads are ridiculously big! The Portal demo is almost 6 GB? I guess the rest of you are use to it?

Anyway, Portal seems like an odd first game to offer at $20. The Orange Box for PC, 360 and PS3 is only $20 and includes Portal and a bunch of other allegedly great games. I want The Orange Box, not just Portal. Oh well. At least I'll be able to try the demo. And in the mean time I'll have Team Fortress 2 (which is showing up for me and it's allowing me to download it, but I didn't yet since it's also massively huge.)

05-12-2010, 11:19 AM
OH MY GOD

Team Fortress 2 is NOT COMING OUT TODAY! THEY SAID AS MUCH in the press release - you'd think they'd mention their second-biggest game.

Hence it WILL and SHOULD be missing from your games list, unless you're in the beta!!

/rant

EDIT: It's probably missing from the Library view because they're sick of people going on about it.

Portal is the cleanest and smallest of the games running on the Source engine, as there is minimal scripting and it is the easiest base for Valve to start from, as it already has all of HL2's textures and models.

I kinda agree - but then, my current (PC) steamapps folder is 120 odd gig... not sure I want that kind of load in my library, I think having it in the documents folder is a good compromise.

You can always simlink it to another location if you want.

OK Guys and gals I just downloaded and played torchlight on the MAC using STEAM..

First impressions- The game looks and plays great on my 2007 iMac Ati2600 pro though I did notice just a hint of stutter moving around with full Antialising on etc.. Might have been the hard drive cache as well I dunno.

Second there is a bug in the Client for Steam at least in this game when you do the overlay and hit web browser and try to go to the steam forums and enter your username and password in the top box username will be allowed but password never enters..

About torchlight. The game plays great on the MAC so if your looking for a good RPG hack and slash you will want to install this one even on old machines as it has a notebook mode also making it work on anything basically.

Cloud is broken

No.

Note on SteamCloud support - the Mac version DOES support SteamCloud, however our implementation of that is not cross platform. i.e. you can migrate your saves from PC to PC, and Mac to Mac, and they won't collide with one another, but your PC saves will not migrate to Mac and vice-versa. Our saves ( and all the other compressed files associated with them when using mods ) are not cross-platform, and we would have had to have thought of that a lot earlier to make it happen. This isn't a limitation of Steam, it's just how we initially wrote the game.

This is really fun following the forum topic and (patiently) waiting for the Torchlight demo to download.

Agreed. Though, I probably won't be able to play with Mac-Steam for a couple weeks, this forum has successfully allowed me to enjoy, vicariously, the anticipation. All I keep telling myself is that I won't have to deal with the server crash issues that all of you first-day adopters will.

....

In a certain sense it is. Application support is made for these kind of things.

It is. Documents should only contain user created files. Dropping tens of gigs worth of game data in the documents folder is a mess. Application Support is there for this very reason.

Using Application Support would also allow Steam to keep one copy of games for all users on the machine (they can use /Application Support/ for all user installations, ~/Application Support/ for single user installs). With ~/Documents being the install path, there is no good way to prevent multiple installs of games for multiple users.

I was able to run the Torchlight Demo but I'm seeing some pretty agregious graphic artifacts in the game. There are these weird bars running diagonally from the bottom left up toward the top middle. It's unplayable. Perhaps due to the integrated graphics on my 1st gen MacBook? Either way it's pretty unacceptable. Did they test this thing?

Loving all the people who are like "WTF WHERES MAH TF2", and I'm LOLing.

Personally, I find TF2 to be a game that is fun for it's comical ability to be violent and full of instant-action. I prefer games that can have some real storyline (hence, I prefer Garry's Mod, or playing SMOD using only the shovel and flamethrower, pretending to be an old lady with multiple personalities, one of them being some Satanic monster with a hunger for "the fleshes", another a crazed pyromaniac who thinks that the Satanic personality is his target and is tracking it, and finally the kind old lady's usual self, wondering what the hell is going on whenever she finds herself standing over a pile of burned or shovel-slapped bodies. I might try and record the voices I came up with sometime.

Team Fortress is just temporarily removed from the library on Mac, presumably to ease the load on the servers. I see other games on my list which aren't installable and according to some sources won't be released today.

Why would a game that was installable and playable before in beta suddenly disappear from the list and other, unplayable and uninstallable games would remain? I believe this is the proof TF2 is coming today!

I disagree, I think they are removing it from the list because it won't be available today and they don't want to forget so they have begun updating all that already.

Agreed

Summary:

Steam Cloud goes PC>PC, and Mac>Mac, but it does not go between platforms. Thank you for trying to let us know of this LIFE-THREATENING BUG, though...

It DOES go between platforms, but not for certain things like Torchlight saved games. Valve games go between platforms.

Win32 side support for Steam Play / Steam Cloud integration with upcoming Mac titles

http://store.steampowered.com/news/3820/

Ah, I missed that. Edited to say "currently" does not go cross-platform.

If you read that page, it says you get Portal to play for free during the beta. I would not expect a AAA game being offered for free.

Also, if you want to save some $$, sign-in to the current http://store.steampowered.com/ page with your account. You can buy games directly from this page without needing to install them.

Portal by itself is $19.99 but the Orange Box is $29.99 at this page - http://store.steampowered.com/sub/469/. You'll get Portal today for Mac, and the other games as they become available.

When I try to run the client, it downloads the first update but as it tries to install it, it comes up with a "Failed to..." error message that disappears so quickly I can't tell what's wrong.

Has anyone else had this issue?
