So chasing down the enemy actually causes you to have casualties. Seems a little more realistic I guess, but how are you supposed to gain experience points when your General dies upon charging against routing enemy troops? He was the only death in that unit, and while I'm miffed I was wondering if any one else has had generals kill themselves?

It doesn't sound like he killed himself to me it sounds like you accidentally killed him by sending him into a fight.
Just because men are routing it doesn't mean they are going to give up and allow themselves to be hacked to pieces, if they can take out one of your soldiers they will do and this time it just happened to be your General lol

I don't mean that the general actually threw himself on his own sword, I mean what good is a body guard if they can't protect the main man? I won the battle anyway, it was just annoying to have that moment of low moral in my line infantry who were standing around while the Cav. mopped up.

I was watching but not that closely. Next time I will zoom in.

Why did you charge with your general in the first place?
That's what cavalry is for. General is for morale.

Since I started playing Total War games beginning with Rome, I have used all mounted units to run down fleeing troops. Since this particular group had been shattered, I saw no real threat and sent the leader in.

I have also noticed if you charge two group of horse into a routing unit the blow back from your own units charge kills via friendly fire like deaths.
Also when I some units route by command in NTW and when you chase them down the AI stops routing and turns to fight. which put my general in some sticky situations.
Another one which is more common is my guys still fire at routing trooops but hit my own horse more then the routing troops or Canon crew.
I had one death where there is a big hill in front of both armies and there canon fired into the hill 10 meters in front stright into the ground sending the round shot stright into the air arcing past its fireing range and killed my general in before I could even assess the situation. Heroic death ..... at which point i said its late i dont need to go to sleep angry.

yeah, as with what thewizard said after u, in past total war games e.g rome and medieval, the general was a really effective unit to run down routing enemies, mainly due to the fact that he was usually fresh at the end of a battle

What i noticed is that routing Infantry Units are from time to time faster than running light cav when pursuing :-)
The same happens when light cavalery is pursuing heavy Cavalery.
Seems like they are all Carl Lewis :-)
