View Full Version : Bad Company 2- worth playing on a weaker computer?

I'm thinking of getting Bad Company 2 for the multiplayer, but I'm worried my computer isn't powerful enough to get a decent framerate at 1360X786 resolution. My specs:

Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 GhZ
4 GB RAM

I know that's over the minimum, but I've been hearing that you need a quad core to run this well and that the game is one of the biggest resource hogs on the market, and I've never tried anything with advanced scenery destruction on my PC so I'm concerned the CPU won't be able to handle it. I don't care if I have to turn the graphics all the way down- is it possible to get a good framerate on this with my specs? Or should I just be considering the PS3 version?

It should play with acceptable fps. The final game is better optmimised for dual cores than the beta was, I have seen reports of dual core users getting decent performance now, and your dual core isn't a really low end one (3.0ghz wolfdale?)

I'd say yes.
Sure you wont be able to use the best possible graphics, but as for me, the most important is the gameplay.
And if your graphics are good enough to see enemies motions, and you can spot them without difficulties because of the low resolution or low details, then go for it!
In my opinion, low level details arent a problem for seeing/spotting enemies, in fact, it can even be easier, as you see them more "clearly" on a more homogeneous background.
BC2 is THE game. Go for it!
See ya on the battlefields, Penguin! :)

I've got a dual core running at 3.2 Ghz and a 1gb 9800.
I can't max it out or anything, but on medium settings I sit around 40fps. Very playable.

It should run fine on your system as long as you turn shadows down, turn off HBAO/VSYNCH and keep AA and AS on X1.

You can max out everything else.

Trust me - even if you had everything on MAX, you wouldn't notice much difference with the stuff I mentioned above turned down.

(I use a 8800GTS card BTW)

I average around 45FPS throughout the game. There's no slowdown for me.

Cool, thanks for the advice. I'm just always iffy about putting down money for games that recommend a quad core processor since it's a bit hit and miss how much not having one will effect performance, particularly when there's no demo available.

Oh btw Penguin:
I play the game on a 2x processor myself and it runs really fine.
(card NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT)
No worries!

Yeesh. I couldn't imagine playing at an average of 40-45 fps. That's borderline unplayable in my book. I have most things set to high <dx9, hbao off, aa x1, shadows medium> and normally average somewhere in the range of 55-75fps with vsync on. I'll dip to the 40s in heavy combat with explosions all around and I find it incredibly annoying. I absolutely love this game and would recommend it, but I'd be conflicted when deciding to buy it if I knew I'd be getting terrible fps.

core i9 920 @ 3.0Ghz
GTX 260
6gb RAM

My mate has a 1.8 core 2 duo, 2 gigs of ram and an 8800 gtx and can max the game with a little aa and af @ 1440x900 with no slow down. I'd say you would be fine.

I have the same video card but I'm on a quad core with 4gb of ram. You should be okay, but not perfect

lol you find it incredibly annoying when it dips in the 40's? You really dont realise how good you have it. I would kill for 40 fps.

So, I got the game and played through some of the single player. It's an absolute blast so far and running flawlessly, but I'm having a wierd resolution problem. I set it to 1360X768, which is the highest my monitor can manage and what I play all games at, but it looks as if I've got it on an incorrect setting. The game is a bit blurry and some HUD and menu assets are partially off the screen, as would happen if you had the resolution set too low.

Could this be a problem on my end or is it something in the game's settings I haven't configured properly? I've never encountered this before.

I've got:
Athlon64 x2 5000+
4GB (3.5GB because XP) RAM
GeForce 7600GT @590kHz (hi there bottleneck)
XP

I have to use lowest settings at 1024x768 and use the low quality sound trick (turn your sound quality down to 41kHz, this game's sound is buggy and uses way too much CPU time) but it plays with minimal stuttering, good enough framerate, and looks fine. This is one of those games that looks pretty good (not fantastic) even on very low settings. I think it's worth it even if sometimes my computer gets me killed.
