Please read all of this before you answer. So here is my error message when playing online on any regular server.

Client timed out while answering challenge.
---> Please make sure that you have opened the appropriate ports on any firewall you are connected behind.
---> See http://support.steampowered.com for help with firewall configuration

Now catch this. If I play ESEA, just playing on there pug servers, the issue is magically gone. It doesn't occur if I play in new game. I've tried to delete my exceptions and re add them. I've tried to let them relearn themselves. I've tried going to safe mode and working with the same ideas for the firewall. I could use some help what to change possibly with my ports. Im using a router "linksys WRT54GS". Any suggestions of what else i could possibly do is greatly appreciated.

Hey, idk the answer to your problem but I googled "Client timed out while answering challenge" and clicked on the www.dslreports.com link and found a good answer.

Have you tried reinstalling CS?
Have you scanned for spyware and/or viruses?
Have you rebooted the modem and/or router (if you have one)?
Could you try reinstalling network card/your chipset ethernet drivers?

Does the connection cut out when you do something else? ie. instant messaging, browsing, downloading a file, streaming a video, listening to live radio feeds

If it cuts out then, I would call up your ISP and have them take a look at your connection.

If everything is Okay from that point on, I would format and reinstall the OS (whatever you use).

If it still happens after that, it's possible it can be a hardware failure. To what in particular, possibly the network card or ethernet port is a good place to start.

Good luck.

That credit goes to Airwolf from those forums. Good luck.

I've actually tried the first two. Internet doesnt not disconnect while playing anything else, or doing anything else. Any othere suggests are welcomed. Hoping not to have to format. It only seems to happen when playing on regular cs 1.6 servers. But using esea client and playing on their pugs stops this.

This message actually appeared on me too but i ve already did this xD.

But i don't have any problems with this because it happens rarely.
