View Full Version : Valve, it would be great if you make new HL3 and CS2 on OpenGL 4, not DirectX 11

That's all. It's not intime, but ... ;) Just remembered the success of HL1 on OpenGL

Once Christ comes back, you wont need a forum to know.
Im curious to see how the opengl/directx thing works out. Its got to be annoying to have to update the engine for both of them. Im personally hoping they go with opengl.

Yeah. OpenGL 4.0 was made and it will compete with DirectX 11 in full beauty. Som my fingers crossed for OpenGL 4.0, not DirectX 11

I'd say DirectX would be Valve's preference as it's what the Xbox 360 uses.

With Source coming to Mac OSX, and as MAC OSX uses OpenGL, I wouldn't be surprised if OpenGL was integrated in the Windows version of Source. Also, PS3 uses OpenGL for Source as well.

I don't see why valve would continue with an openGL and directX version of source at the same time.
It would be far too much effort since they've got different ways of doing stuff.
Windows can run openGL... I think everything can run openGL. I think that's the nature of being 'open'.

Like the guy above said, I don't think the 360 can so

That's a good point about the 360.
I can only find stuff saying 360 doesn't do openGL. I wouldn't expect anything else from Micro$haft.
So yeh, if valve want to keep the 360 business there'll have to be a DX version.
I want more information :o

Yeah OpenGL 4 was announced a few days ago.
I think it's likely, seeing as they have to make it work on OSX too. ;)

What can run OpenGL: Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, PS3, Wii (+ many others)
What can run DirectX: Windows, Xbox360
So you see what potential benefits OpenGL has. Just that in the current world, Windows and consoles seem to be the only gaming platforms for the masses.
In the past, Microsoft supported both, OpenGL and DirectX but they dropped support for OpenGL and pulled through their own DirectX instead.
I'm not sure how good Valve has managed to make their games run on OpenGL vs DirectX but surely the difference is insignificant (propably in favor of DirectX since the Source engine was coded for it anyway) because they announced native support for OSX.
So the game propably runs as good on OSX than it does on Windows. We shall see.

Thank ♥♥♥♥ for OSX support though. ;)
