i seriously need a 'Torpedo Aiming For Dummies' ... i was a master at sinking convoys in SH3... so it isnt a skillbased problem... its just f*cked up in SH5! any tips n trix? nothing is too obvious... i probably just missed something right infront of me..

There is a manual TDC video on youtube you should watch that to learn how to setup the shot. if you're using Auto TDC you have to use the periscope to adjust the gyros. basically you just have to line up the the 3 on the 3 or the 2 on the 2 or the 1 on the 1 and fire your torp. After a little practice you'll be sinking merch all night long

thx for the tip, i just did that and... what it basicly said was 'spend 3min browsing a single ship for avg speed/etc wich imho will be verry tiresome if there's a convoy of 10+ ships... also.. he used like 4 torpedo's on one ship... i use 2..max.. any aiming tips? cuz ive been sinking destroyers with my deck gun for quite some time now... and this is NOT how ur supposed to use a sub xD

Sinking destroyers with the deck gun is a big no no in the submarine community, but by simply doing it you are showing us that you have some serious brass ones ;).

I don't think we watched the same video. Use this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZejK46JamFE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZejK46JamFE). I tend to to just use the quick map to determine range, bearing, Speed, AoB, . I go with the theory that I have capable sonar techs and they don't need me to check up on their work.

ahh..okey... but im playing on medium so i still got auto TDC but i still miss? :P oh well.. i figured it's easier to sneak past the patrols into britt harbours and torpedo their ships in the dock... xD

Can someone tell me how the auto TDC works? Because I keep missing, when I tell the TDC to find the solution.

I've actually given up on auto TDC, but auto TDC really comes down to matching up a number dot on top of the targets same numbered dot. It's about that simple, but if you can't directly get them on top of each other it's up to you to try and interpolate the location on the intersecting lines.

This was the biggest learning curve for me in SH5 so far, it took me three-four cruises to truly get the system of the numbers.
I still really have to think about it when it comes to numbers that just won't match up. Basically the 1--2---3 system requires very little thought action when you can line your torpedo's 3 up with the boat's 3, but if the distance simply never is right for it, you gotta judge a little yourself. I think that'll be a piece of cake soon enough, with some experience.

I say once you are in the position you want to be in to fire and the target ship is where you want between 2k-500m then find the target on your periscope identify the target and set torpedo depth accordingly and pause the game. from there expand the map mini map.
Use your ruler to find the exact distance (if your less then 1k, hover over the ship on the map will tell you the exact range.) enter in the range to the TDC, use the bearing from the periscope, from hovering over the ship the sonar guy will tell you the speed. now you just need the AoB.
AoB is found by using ruler to find the targets bearing (other wise known as track). To do that zoom all the way in on the target in the minimap and use the ruler starting in the center or aft section of the ship and draw a straight line out about 250m through the bow. Try to be as accurate as possible.
now use the protractor tool starting at the far end of the bearing line you just made. the second point should be the center of the target and the 3rd is the center of your own ship. enter in the angle you received as the angle on the bow 9you may have to enter in a negative sign to change port and starboard sides).
At this point you should see your firing solution on the minimap ahead of the target. unpause the game and fire the torpedoes. As you get more comfortable with this process you will be able to do it in real time by drawing out the targets track and determining a firing solution further ahead of the target and then waiting for the target to sail across the point that you created your firing solution for.
some may say it's cheating to use the mini map information, but from my rl submarine experience it's the STs job to provide the FTs with the range, bearing and speed so that the FTs can figure out the firing solutions.

Nah, I have figured the 1-2-3 system.

Nah, I have figured the 1-2-3 system.
problem with the 1-2-3 system is that if your crew's moral is low or if weather is bad then they don't give you very much distance to work with. and you end up having to chase down the target to get the dots to line up.
I would prefer if my XO would give me a real firing solution like in SH4.

What I wouldn't give for a green screen in this game... I don't see why you can't just put in the target's course, speed, and range and fire torpedo's based on that.

I don't understand. That is what you do with the TDC on.

i am new to the SH series aswell the "torpedo missed sir!" is a big problem for me i can line my sub right next to the enemy and the torpedo will still miss with TDC on.
