Spore's decline started before its initial release, seeing as Spore turned out nothing like it was in the GDC 05. EA has milked Spore to the limit, making patches (which are great and essential), STEAM Downloadability (Great marketing tecnique BTW Valve), An expansion (Which is good, really good.), Spin-offs (Which aren't near as good as making expansions), and worst of all, a promotion run by Dr. Pepper (Seriously EA, Why?). All in all, the user content is the only thing keeping Spore alive.

GLaDOS: Don't beleive me, here I'll put EA on: [MONEH!!!!!!] THAT EA, THAT'S HOW DUMB THEY SOUND!
(End randomness.)

Will Wright is no longer part of Maxis/EA so there went the whole driving force of ingenuity that company ever had. I expect the whole Sims franchise to go even further into the toilet without Wright as an influence. On the other hand, I look forward to seeing what Will Wright can cook up WITHOUT having big brother EA looking over his shoulder and dicking around with the results.

I don't see anything wrong with some promotional items since nobody is forcing you to download it. If it was advertising that EA tried to sell as an expansion, I'd be mad. Since it's free content that you can get or ignore if you choose, it's no big deal either way. I haven't actually SEEN what this new content looks like, so if it's a big Dr.Pepper logo on a spaceship or Dr.Pepper Gifts to tribes or something stupid, then yeah, it's STUPID, but still optional.

I knew spore was too ambitious of a project and I was ultimately going to be let down, but that's life. As for the expansions, I'm not buying them unless they're cheap. I just played Spore for the first time in months and it's not as engrossing as I originally found it to be, so any more money invested in it would be a waste for me at this point, unless it totally fixes the flaws in the original game.

I also knew that I was bound to be disappointed, but not this much. There was so much build up everywhere over the past few years. If only just half of the gameplay had the same enjoyability as the creators...

It could be so much, and people IS willing to acquire more expansions. They could make so much more...

It makes you wonder who is running things in those companies. A monkey?
And I don't mean one of those well-trained capuchin monkey helpers.
I mean a dead monkey. A zombie dead monkey. Without head.

Have they fixed the space phase yet? That is what killed the game for me, up to space it was great fun but space was just a colossal waste of time, not to mention impossible to level up your ship so you could actually do anything.

OP: Wheres the proof? I only see an explanation (opinion). Then again Maxis got bought by EA so I agree.

RaranTroff: What do you mean? I found the space stage the best part until it simply got repetitive. Getting to the center was fun though. You also got Galatic Adventures which adds missions to planets etc.
Prior to the first patch there were a lot a crashes simply flying from one planet to another, thats been corrected. EDIT: Seems other users on forum have similar issues still so you mileage may vary.

i think the game has declined for several reasons

1. not living up to the hype, this ended up being an evolution arcade game rather than an evolution simulator, which drove away the hardcore fans..
2. lack of interest, the only people who've been playing since 2008 are people who like to make stuff, not play the game

because of this, its doubtful ea/maxis will actually make more content, we might get lucky and get another part pack

The problem is not whether the promotional times are optional or not. The problem is that not everyone gets the option. The promotional offer only works in America and thus a huge part of the fan base was let down.

I don't think spore is dead at all, I mean recently I received an update for spore where I get exoskeleton parts.

I wanted this game, but had second thoughts about it. It seemed really fun, but everything I ever heard about it seemed to point to a lack of game. I hope you guys that bought it are still enjoying it.
