UT 3 recently started crashing/freezing

I'd be grateful if for any ideas on workarounds/ remedies/ diagnostics I could try

Since about a week, UT 3 has commenced copping out mid-game on me. Has not happened before about 10 mins of playing, does not always happen, but happens. Game freezes, and all I can do is get out via Ctrl-Alt-Del and stop the unresponsive application UT3.

Running XP SP3, Sapphire ATI HD4870, three core PhantomX4, 3.25GB mem. Over the last week, I added Dropbox, Call of Duty 4 and Risen (the latter two from Steam, so unlikely that has anything to do with it). Also, a number of updates from Microsoft were automatically installed

Edit: Browsing other related sites, I realized that the installation of one of the other games updated DirectX (CoD I believe), a potential source of such problems. However, if i remeber correctly the start of the problems predated the CoD installation

go to C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\unreal tournament 3\Engine\Config and delite the BaseEngine and BaseGame Files. when u launch it may ask you for games CD key.

Did that. The game would then not start anymore at all.

Interestingly, the game freezing seems to occur particularly often when I try to board a vehicle. This morning, it froze every single time I tried to get onot a Darkwalker on one particular server
