I'm sorry if this has been posted before, but think about how small the furnace you dropped the weighted companion cube in. Now, consider that when you are sliding into the fire pit, GLaDOS says that there was no chance of a equipment malfunction due to heat because "All Aperture technologies remain safely operational up to 4000 degrees Kelvin. Rest assured that there is absolutely no chance of a dangerous equipment malfunction prior to your victory candescence."

So wait. If GLaDOS is right, then the weighted companion cube might not actually be gone. Of course, you might point out that GLaDOS's different AI cores were able to be destroyed in the same kind of furnace that you put the cube in, but I'm sure that since the Aperture scientists were obviously worried about the AI going haywire (The red phone, the fact that there's a furnace in the room.) they would probably not have made those parts so heat resistant.

So what do you think? Think the WCC would have been fireproof to the same degree?

A cube isn't exactly "technology". Also, that was an "Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator" meaning that it is used for destroying things like intelligence so nobody will find out about said intelligence.

You bring up a valid point though- GLADOS had her cores stuffed into the incinerator, they may be resistant to the heat so perhaps this is how she is still alive?

I don't think it's possible, since GLaDOS herself said that she was curious about <Player name Here>, but <Player name Here> destroyed that part of her (Curiosity Core).

...I think.

Nazzer

Consider just how hot 4,000 degrees Kelvin is, though. That's 6740.6 degrees Fahrenheit. For comparison, the surface of the sun is 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and 5,777 degrees kelvin. Also, the melting point of diamond is 3,820 degrees kelvin.

I don't think that the furnaces could reach that high of a temperature.

And of course the WCC is a technology. It is weighted with precision, it is incredibly helpful, the size dimensions are consistent, and it tells the best jokes.

I hope we get a gnome achievement in Portal 2 too, but with the Gnome replaced with the WCC

MADDOGGE
03-15-2010, 09:10 AM
Nah we need the gnome achievement. Once they included him in L4D2 it's almost a set up for a ongoing and continuing joke achievement in all future Valves games. I actually expect to see him if as nothing more than a easter egg in P2. I think I would be mildly disappointed if I didn't. After all Valve could have easily used a stuffed animal in L4D2 but they instead used the gnome.

I don't think that the furnaces could reach that high of a temperature.

Aperture Science stick a candle in an infinite loop of 6 pairs of inter-connected portals. They then move one portal tiny ammounts on a vibrating platform and a heat based paradox occurs, allowing the emergency incinerators to heat to well beond that level.

Or, knowing Cave, he fired a portal into the sun.

They consider a radio a piece of Aperture Science Technology, so why not THE weighted companion cube.

If radios can survive the incinerator, then so can the WCC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

03-15-2010, 04:45 PM
AFAIK, GLADOS was lying about the effects so we'd hop in. There isn't any reason to believe anything survived incineration.

Xenophin
03-15-2010, 04:52 PM
This is just a shot in the dark but most people know GLaDOS as a compulsive liar, so why wouldn't it be any different here? Also, if you look at the ASHPD's model there's a bar-code then the number 4. This would suggest that there were other portal guns for the other test subjects. (or the ratman whatever you want to call them) Now with that information, each of them probably suffered a tragic burning death and there is no trace of there portal guns.

The fact that it's called the "Aperture Science Emergency Intelligence Incinerator" implies that it's designed to incinerate Aperture Science technology in case of an emergency.

Thus, it must exceed the safe tolerances of their technology. Note that the fire pit you're dropping into is just 'boring, basic fire' and not the red hot glow of the incinerator.

But consider that making GLaDOS fireproof is just silly. You only need to make one of her, not presumably hundreds like you would the turrets or storage cubes, and you know that there's a chance she'll need to be destroyed. I'm sure she could be an exception to the "4000 Kelvin" rule.

I think the physical body of GLaDOS is susceptible to heat damage, but trying to kill AI that is still plugged in would be fruitless. Since she could just copy herself elsewhere.

It depends on the materials they built it with.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melting_point

Carbon sublimes at 4 thousend kelvin degrees, so maybe the major components of the enrichment center stuff were made out of this (the only reason i'm saying this is that the game itself gives us only this reference...)
