03-16-2010, 04:55 AM
Does this affect you in game as well? The problem for me is that I couldn't get widescreen at all not that it was too wide. Either way I'm guessing there's a bug for some people. I'm not at my PC now so I can't check but you could try messing with one of the cfg files to see if you can adjust settings from there.

03-16-2010, 06:05 AM
Just for the sake of comparison (to see if the issue is the same as mine) could you post some screens?
One at 1024x768 (or other like aspect) and another at your screens native (I'm assuming 16:10 or 9). Make sure something like a character is in shot and don't move (obviously). Thanks.

Maybe they just didn't port it with widescreen capability?
Or maybe your computers graphics card panel doesnt have widescreen enabled?
Dunno if that even exists, but im just trying to help :)

By the way, here's the bug I'm talking about (possibly only affects certain resolutions or setups as some say theres are correct):
1024x768: http://img686.imageshack.us/img686/9646/metro203320100315232921.jpg - notice proportions are correct
1440x900: http://img517.imageshack.us/img517/2258/metro203320100315232858.jpg - everything is the exact same as the 1024 one just stretched.
And the loading menus get messed up as well:

The problem seems to be that the field of view is WAY to small. And by too small, I mean, this seems like it's even smaller than the average console game small. Unfortunately, the only setting related to FOV in the user.cfg is sick_fov, which I doubt has anything to do with most of the game. And by the way, it defaults to 45. So SUPER ZOOM.
Chances are, we'll have to wait for someone to figure out how to change the FOV through external means, and until then, just pretend that the character has a crippling hunchback that requires him to be bent way forward all the time.
Edit: Scratch that, kinda. Post above mine shows that the entire screen stretches in widescreen. Ouch. It's still got a terribly low FOV, though.

Easy! there is 2 user.cfg
one is located in appdata>local>4agames>metro2033
the other is located in you steam folder under
userdata>*youraccountnumber*>43110>remote
you need to change setting in both of these cfg in order for you changes to stay. I use fov 60, although it does not fix the stretching. Somebody needs to figure out how to get the aspect ratio to change from 4:3 to 16:9 that is what will fix that problem.
Btw I am having trouble changing resolutions. Every time I try to change my resolution the screen goes black. I can hear sounds and other things but nothing is displayed! I have to delete said cfg and verify my cache in order to fix that. what is going on with this game?

playing at 1680x1050 and I have the same problem with the screen cut-off on the chapter screens :(
otherwise a pretty sweet game, and is running like a dream with DX11 and settings on "High"
i have the same issue. stretched graphics @ 1440x900, very ugly. completely kills the atmosphere of this nice game. feels like back in days of stoneage widescreengaming, when you had to check for solutions for every single game to be properly displayed. hope there will be a fix soon. do they even know of this?

I also use 1440x900 and have the same issue where I can't read the loading screen properly and the ingame looks stretched. This is very disappointing that they wouldn't even add proper support for widescreen. I feel like I wasted my money. Can I still return it to steam? I don't even want this game now. :<

Ok here's some comparisons for FOV.
Both are 16:10 at 1680x1050
Default 45 FOV

People that are having problems might want to look into GPU scaling. If you are playing in WS below your LCD's native rezz your video card. Could even your monitor that's up scaling the image to fit the whole screen.
Here is a pic from a ATI control panel and shows the settings off. NVIDIA also has settings for GPU SCALING.

Some time ago I managed to download 196.75 driver from Nvidia, and it does not give the message. But this version has been removed from Nvidia page due to some fan speed issues. I tried current release driver (196.21) - and there was a message. Also tried latest beta driver (196.34) - no message. For now I would probably stick with beta 196.34.
BTW no issues on 1920x1200, 1680x1050 or 1440x900 using GTX 285 + Dell 2408WFP.

A temporary fix- in your config file people have been discussing, set r_fullscreen to 'off'. Then, provided you have your resolution at the maximum native res, it will scale to fill all but a small strip at the bottom of the screen. Set your taskbar to autohide (right click it- properties- auto hide the taskbar) then set your desktop background to pure black. That should give a pretty much perfect image. Hope this helps people.

I don't know that it helps to mention this or not, but...
The game throws up a 5:4 box for a split-second when it launches, as if it's loading that ratio. Problem is, it does it no matter what res you're running. That might be why it's giving us all 5:4 @ 1680x1050, whatever res, etc.

Yeah, frustrating that it does this; hopefully a patch will resolve it shortly. I've found that using the classic xp appearance reduces the noise to a couple of grey strips at the bottom using windowed mode, but a proper fullscreen would obviously be preferred in a game with so much darkness. Lights off FTW etc. Also, has anyone noticed that mouse sensitivity seems stronger for horizontal movement? Bug or a feature... ? :D

When you say it doesn't work for you, what do you mean? Does it remain fullscreen or does it go windowed but remain distorted? If it isn't going fullscreen, you've missed a config file somewhere. If it's windowed and still distorted... I've no idea. Sorry.

I think it is something to do with the monitor and available resolutions it reports to windows. Can anyone having the problem please post their monitor model and the maximum possible resolution in Windows settings?
If that is the case, installing monitor driver might resolve the issue.
1440x900 is max-res here, with which i'm trying to run this game. manufacturer's driver is installed. so, no - that's not the problem, sadly.

This is working for me, but I can see the blue border of the window at the bottom (winXP ugly default skin/interface). Hardly a problem, to get proper aspect ratio. hopefully a patch comes soon, but for now I will probably play the game like this, unless something comes up like bad performance in windowed mode.
Strange that the aspect ratio is right in windowed mode and not in fullscreen. As far as the game is concerned it should be the exact same in both modes...

I got it fixed, this is what I did in Windows 7. It might be not game related at all, could be that the drivers not properly detecting maximum resolution of your monitor.
Open ATI CCC, go to Desktop & Displays. There is a small monitor icon in the bottom left corner, right click on it and go to "Configure.
In Monitor Attributes deselect "Use EDID or driver defaults" and manually change the maximum refresh rate and maximum resolution to the actual monitors specifications. Apply & Click Ok
http://img245.imageshack.us/img245/2755/aticcc.jpg
If resolution changes due to those settings you have to set the resolution again in the Windows screen resolution settings.
For me the Catalyst detected that maximum resolution is 1920x1080 while my monitors maximum resolution is 1440x900.

I have a panel so that option doesn't seem to be there. But it is reporting a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 (my native/max is actually 1680x1050) there so that may just be the same problem. Does that make it a Catalyst problem, that it's reporting a higher max resolution than these panels are capable of? I suppose the game could have a work-around since other games haven't had this problem. Hmm.

It's not Catalyst issue it's probably the way the game detects the resolution. Which is not fixed with the patch.

I installed this game two weeks ago (bought retail), I have the latest version of course, and I have the wrong aspect ratio problem:
my native res is 1920*1200, when I set that + fullscreen, the picture is distorted + the loading screens are cut off.
If I set it to windowed, aspect ratio is correct.
If I set it to 1600*1200, loading screens are not cut off, but picture is of course distorted.
I have nVidia gtx280, latest drivers and monitor NEC 24WMGX3.
I am really angry about this problem :(

They shipped the game with no Widescreen support....WTF? Seriously.....even my living room TV is widescreen who uses 4:3?
The game has widescreen support. I run it at 1920x1080 with no stretching or fov issues. There's definitely something going on with you guys, but the game does support widescreen.
edit: I had no issues before the patch.

It might work ok with 16:9 res, but on my PC with 16:10 it is screwed up and the wrong aspect ratio damages the atmosphere.

same here, 16:10 and its all screwed since release !
I canīt believe they didnīt properly patch this issue.
if I play windowed mode is allright, but fullscreen is screwed.
this is the only game that does this, unbeliveable.
I left the game waiting for a fix because I am not gonna play this in ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ windowed mode, it ruins the immersion too much.
and by the way when will they finally patch this game ?
I should have stayed away from this, thank god I got it cheap but still...
and for the little I played I was totally underwhelmed by the monsters, they are just laughable, looks like ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ monkeys when they charge at you..
not impressed

yes I still have this freaking issue, 16:10 aspect ratio is screwed, only in windowed mode is correct but this is so annoying I stopped playing long ago, it has been a gamebreak issue for me.
how many months is this game already out and there was not a single serious patch yet !
this is the only fu----g game that behaves like this, I already tried all sort of workarounds, initweaks, displaydriver tweaks, nothing works.
I am truly pis---ed off and I am sure I am not the only one that still has this issue.
its about time they patch this thing, jesus !

Just brought this in the sale, running at 1366x768 just seems to be a squashed version of a 4:3 resolution. Wasn't there an update that fixed the widescreen issues?
Fiddled with the FOV in .cfg files which made it slightly better but it still looks squashed vertically.

lol, funny how no one mentions that widescreen gets stretched when in fullscreen mode when talking about how much of a pc visual powerhouse this game is. totally unplayable.
