Welcome to what will be a more or less concise sum up of the ruse beta, where I shall go through what I find great and not so good about RUSE BETA

Ruse is clearly a game with great potential to be something different to your average RTS game involving base building and resource collection. However, some features that should make this game stand out have been introduced in a somewhat timid way, namely some of the Ruses- however, that will be the last thing I will cover. So to start off, lets go over the interface.

CAMERA.
Panning and straffing are responsive, but zooming is an issue. I've notice the zoom is centered around the mouse pointer, and whenever you wish to zoom in on something the screen keeps moving forwards due to the pointer doing the same. this makes it extremely difficult to zoom in on what you actually want to look at, which can develope into gameplay issues (see next para). This could be solved to a certain extent by being able to double click on the map (for close viewing) and zooming straight there, while being able to use the existing method for not so close shots.

UNIT SELECTION.
After getting used to the left click move+order and right click deselect, I find it easy and relatively straightforward to use. the dropdown menus are also easy to manage. Hovever, there are two minor ♥♥♥♥les:
1) choosing specific units after selecting a bunch of them:
your selected units appear in the bottom right of the screen which is obviously useful. However, you can only choose to select a specific unit type from that group by clicking on the appropriate card; it is not possible to select some of one and some of the other. This could easily be resolved by right clicking on the cards to reduce the number of x and y selected, as at the moment you have to zoom right in to select one infantry unit from a bunch of three, which isnt the easiest thing to do...
2) second is grouping. surely this is a simple thing to implement and would make play a lot, lot more fluid. It is much better to grab a bunch of units once when not under attack and assign them a group, than attempt to hastily draw an innacurate box around them while your base is destroyed. the ANGER!!!
3) third has to be targeting enemy planes, especially when blitzing. it is equivalent to playing wack the mole at level 30 (I have no idea what that is like at level thirty, let alone 1 as I have never played it, but nonetheless I would presume that there is a connection:). However, I cannot think of a simple solution, and if anyone finds one, please write it up as I am sure the majority of players will be most interested!

My next topic is on Factions and Units... coming soon

I'd like to disagree with your "Camera/Zooming" statement. I honestly LOVE this zooming in as I frequently browse the whole map with the mouse. (Moving your mouse towards the edges will pan the map slowly.)

Now I find myself attempting to do this type of zooming in different applications (Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop, 's Preview, ...)

I love this feature. For those who don't like it, there should be an option in the Settings pane to cater to players with different opinions.

Unit Selection 2): second is grouping. surely this is a simple thing to implement and would make play a lot, lot more fluid. It is much better to grab a bunch of units once when not under attack and assign them a group, than attempt to hastily draw an innacurate box around them while your base is destroyed. the ANGER!!!

I actually love the grouping and how you can stack units together. (Usually of the same type so you can easily control and manage them.) I think this is a really innovative feature.

I have to agree with your frustration about "hastily drawing an inaccurate box around [the units] while your base is destroyed."

Perhaps Eugen Systems could incorporate the C+1/C+2 system where units can be grouped together. (Like in other RTSes such as Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne, Warhammer 40K: Dawn of War-Dark Crusade, ...)

pressing ctrl+ number does group units together,
and they can then be selected by pressing the number key you have assigned :)

@fyrevortex:
its not the stacks I'm bothered about; yes that is a good point, but its more getting the units you want out of that stack, out of the stack. with a group of 3 tanks and 2 inf, try getting 1 tank and 1 inf. not easy. and what I meant by groups is as hoshizora mentioned, making certain units easily selectable whenever by having a little bar along the bottom with group numbers
