Just opinions, what ping do you personally think is the maximum between players for a lag free game?

200 is fine, any one with pings over 250 seem to have other problems as well. But I've had lagged ♥♥♥♥ed games with every one well under 200. I think there is more going on than the ping, CPU seems to be important as well.
and of course steam, (or something) might just drop people.

I know that Supreme Commander actually set a minimum ping that was fairly high (200-300 IIRC), and I assume they've kept it similar.
Having a computer that can actually run the game fluidly will help the most (as the game runs at the simspeed of the slowest player) but if you keep 200 or less it is pretty much guaranteed to be smooth.

In my experience with Forged alliance, if you don't have a good processor, and the same for everyone else, you're pretty SOL in some cases.

FA is nothing to supcom2, FA and supcom were badly coded, required high resources for not much output. anything lower than 300 ping is fine, as long as everyone has a good pc.

For a badly coded game... I like FA so much better. More replayability. But, everyone has their favorite games. But ping wise, 200-300 is fine.

Gameplay and performance are completely different. I like FA. but its performance is horrible. Badly coded bull♥♥♥♥.

I agree, but we've gotten off topic. Ping answer has pretty much been answered for our friend.

As long as the ping is < 500, all that matters is how stable the connection between each players is.

Under 200-250 will generally be fine. Towards the late game though, a player with an older or slower computer can really bring the game to a crawl for everyone else. I've played some games on Setons with hundreds of units on the screen, and despite everyone having a ping of about 100..someone with their graphics settings too high will inevitably slow everyone else down.

This, and also the power of someone elses PC has an effect on the game more than just connection alone

I've played on games where my ping is around 350 to 400 and had perfectly stable and smooth matches. Slow PC's are the bane of this game. This is not an FPS, ping is not a huge factor. But a stable connection is essential.

Stable connections are essential yes, one of the players had 800-1400 ping when we started a match the other day, it caused massive lag, even when he fixed it, his connection was still unstable and jumping to 400-450 ping, causing lag again.
i generally find, any ping over 400 = lag game.
