View Full Version : How do you play Half-Life 2?

As the title asks - "How do you play it?"
I experimented with the "friendly" turrets and thought to myself I could take one or two with me for the assault later.
On my next play through, I decided to take ALL the turrets to the teleportation chamber. This seemed to work really well as I needn't fire anything. Although I took note of the ideal places to put them all. Three of them seemed to be placed perfectly and little chance in being knocked over and disabled
Anyone else do anything similar? (different chapter maybe)

I take two turrets with me to the cell block, but have always left them there. I never thought of taking all of them with me further, and don't know if I'll try in the future.
(My first two playthroughs I dragged supply crates around with me and might want to try a game without encumbrances since I'm cured of that, now... It was a major pain in the butt to do that with squad members getting in my way. :D)

The best strategy to me(if we are talking the part where combine soldiers are coming at you and you have wait for Alyx) is to leave the turrets in the compartments they are in but rotate them where they are facing outside and just camp there and wait for soldiers.

We're talking a little later in the game taking those turrets with us when we leave the area.

It doesn't have to be that section - it could be any part of the game. I use Nova Prospekt as an example. It was pretty cool to have loads of turrets in that teleport chamber though. The combine seem to have a knack for using grenades of knocking them over. The further back they are, the more likely they are to get hit. Even better if they're staggered distances.

Lets see...the Queen Antlion in Nova Prospekt.
When I played with her for a few times, I used the gravity gun.
My fear + Gravity gun = Less fear.
Then at my THIRD play with her, at the first meet where the 'exit' is barricaded with benches, laundry carts, tables I blew those things up with the SMG grenade.
Then at the second 'battle', I just ran straight for the exit and removed the dumpster using the gravity gun as fast as possible.
Took the action away, but yeah. Very risky.

there is a room with ammo box inside... and some supplies scattered in prison cells
basically grab the furnitures from a control room in the 2nd floor
and barricade 1 side off
then place all turrets near the other (only entrance where combine can reach you)
and use tables to barricade the turrets from the combine
the incoming event will not start until you deployed all turrets
so the basic tactic would be to barricade everything before moving the 3 turrets
(2 in the cell area, 1 being brought over from the previous area)

In cell block D8, there are 3 turrets. In the control room before that (where you have to wait for Alyx), there are 2 turrets. You can have up to 5 turrets for the D8 battle.
Before, I've always brought the 2 turrets with me, arranged all 5 and parked myself in one of the turret storage slots and killed any Combine who reached me. Next time, I think I'll just use the 3 that are there and see what that's like. :)

When you arrive in the core where Breen is in his portal, there's a moving platform to the right blocking your path. So you must wait, right? Not.. really.
During his little conversation, jump on the rail in front of you, sprint and jump across without having to wait ;)
Note: This triggers future scripted events that may cause the game to go haywire with dialog and you to be killed instantly if played on hard mode.

I would love to play with the crowbar and pistols damages WAY increased, and then only use them, but later on there's hardly any pistol ammo.

Yes, he actually moves forward faster when jumping (compare to HL2DM, where his speed doesn't actually increase). By this method, you can increase your speed almost indefinitely assuming you can keep hitting space exactly as you hit the ground and you don't hit a wall.

Yes, bunny-hopping lives! (Kind of.) Pretty useful in places life Ravenholm where you may need to out run some slow zombies.

Especially when you arrive at the part where you first hear the cry of the fast zombie.
Just run straight, go into the left building, use the physgun, make it to the top, dive into the water tower/go up the ladder instantly, and then jump off the ledge and over the gate to proceed.

at first i thought this was gonna be a spam idiotic question. But here is how i play:
Play like normal (way they wanted us to) until i find the shotgun then i just hold shift and shoot whatever i NEED to kill to continue.
beat the entire game in like 6 hours :P

I like to make sure that everything is dead before I move on. However, there are some areas where that's not possible and I died plenty of times before I decided to just say ♥♥♥♥ it and run through (The strider battle in Anticitizen One comes to mind).
As for the turrets in Nova Prospekt, I usually bring one with me, and for the D8 battle, there's a nice little cell in one of the corners that's easily defended because it essentially creates a choke-point because the combine can only come from one general direction. You end up having to manage only one turret post with 3-5 turrets taking on all the soldiers instead of having to manage 2 turret posts with 1-4 turrets taking on squads.
And for Ravenholm, I love bringing as many saw blades and explosive gas tanks and barrels as I can with me. It's a nice little challenge to try and get through without firing a single bullet. Damn near impossible, too.

In regards to the turret situation, I grab a turret and hold it out in front of me while I hide in one of the turret wall lockers. Then, the combine soldiers run up and attempt to melee the turret while I'm still holding it.
And let me tell you, watching four combine soldiers trying to melee down a turret floating a foot above the ground, while it's firing at them, and I'm crouching behind it...
One of the most hilarious moments of HL2

I played on Easy the first time, too. Maybe you should go back and get those two turrets. It makes the cell block fight a lot easier--try to place them so grenades can't topple them and hide with the shotgun equipped.

on this playthrough, apparently i play it with multiple alyx clones... i've had 2 pop up on me during entanglement, and have had one clone and the real alyx with me for a while now. i trapped the first one behind a locked prison gate so i wouldn't have to worry about her.
of all my playthroughs, i've never had this happen before. it's really bizarre. my favourite screenshot of this phenomenon:

i just did it on hard a few hours ago actually, and only brought one extra turret with me (it's in the screenshot above). have one facing each of the four directions the combine come from and you'll be fine. have them visible from the little hiding area with the shields and health, it's okay if they're within range of a grenade blast. just make sure your grav gun is ready to get rid of those grenades as soon as you see one. if a turret goes down, kill whatever took it down first, then right it. also, grav gun is by far the best way to kill manhacks. just shoot them into a wall. good luck :)

I once took 5 turrets to the teleport room, in addition to the 3 you get there. Slaughterfest!
I once took every crate in the antlion levels (from the lighthouse on) to the finale with the antlion gaurd. Stutterfest! when he threw a barrel into the area... I was suprised I didn't crash. Of course, this was on a much slower machine than I have today but I don't know if I have the patience to try it again.

Oh yes, it's awesome to have (http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/9702/d2prison080011.jpg) this kind of army.
It made going through this part much, much easier. Like it was planned (http://img263.imageshack.us/g/d2prison080017.jpg/) from the beggining.

It's much easier and more fun when you take every turret that won't shoot you. I must have had two for the entrance to the left of the teleport (looking straight on at it). Two for the entrance opposite. One in the far corner (so the combine would have to REALLY travel to knock it out/over, and the rest spread over randomly so they can't be taken out by one grenade.
I did that recently on Medium. On my next play through on hard, I'll take them all AGAIN !! :) Why waste my own ammunition? It's so much easier to top up my health and suit

The *battle* may be more fun, but after dragging around supply crates everywhere (and a couple turrets) in two playthroughs, I can almost guarantee that dragging the turrets was not "fun". Words like "tedious" and "boring" spring to mind. (So does "worth it". :))

like i was saying, i only brought one extra turret with me to the 2nd and 3rd battles on hard, and it was enough :) i basically just supported with my gravity gun to shoot away grenades. alyx works well as a turret also, she shoots back. the 2nd fight was the hardest, required lots of gravity gun support.

I've taken all the turrets with me before.
In the first turret fight, before I jump down to the cell block, I'll throw any nearby stuff down stairs with the gravity gun and build a barricade.
In the next turret part, I generally barricade the stairs so that the Combine soldiers can't come upstairs. Works pretty well.
