Do not take the title of this thread to literally. The true purpose of this thread, is to get peoples intake on a game that I may one day very well make.
We have all played games like torchlight in the past. Back through to titan quest, all the way back to diablo. These games all put you in the role of a very powerful hero, who is then put into a setting of endless waves of monsters to kill for the pleasure of looting and the enjoyment of leveling.
These games to me have a lot of un-tapped potential in them. Recently I began to play the 2nd installment in the warhammer 40k series, and to my surprise they actually came up with a some what original way of doing things. Instead of building up a massive army and slowly creeping across the map, they put you in control of 4 squads of soldiers, each with 4 members, except your main leader/hero, which makes a total of 13 people. Funny thing is, this is just about as many as comprised the fellowship of the ring in the lord of the rings books. You then could level these squads abilities up through out the game.
So I had the idea that instead of backwards designing an rts to be more like an rpg, why not do the reverse to an rpg similar to torchlight?
Instead of controlling one person, you could recruit a group up, say up to 20 people, each with a different personality, each with unique backgrounds, and each with a unique skill set or special perk. These members of you "guild" could then be grouped into customizable squads to make it easy to select members with either similar skills, or skills that boost/enhance other members skills. For example, one squad might be comprised of combat type characters, with one healer. Or a squad of rouges with a magic type character that could enhance the squad with invisibility.
After gaining the squads, you then could gain a "total" experience pool, that could be divide up among all the squads as you like, that way no "one" squad would gain to many levels.
The rest of the gameplay would play out very similar to the way you would play torchlight. You would select squads in a top down/fully rotatable view, and tactically maneuver the squads through dungeons and gain loot and gold and levels along the way.
But do not mistake this explanation as being a game like dragon age. This game would limit the dialog and play out almost identical to the classic rpg dungeon crawl. And look graphically like a dungeon crawler might look.
This would in essence be an rtrpsg or real time role playing strategy game. A bit of a mouth full....
What do others think about this idea? Please, by all means, give me your honest input. If you think it would suck, tell me why? If you think it has potential, tell me how it could be improved.
Thank you, and as Chris Taylor says "don't forget to hug your mother":)
