View Full Version : My Theories on Half-Life 2

Hey everyone, I got into a discussion with my friend about the possibilities of the half life universe and before I knew it my brain kept going and going 'till I came to a conclusion as to where I think the half life storyline is going to go.

I'll start by saying it's complicated. I think we can all agree that the storyline is already complicated enough and for fellows like myself (storyline lover), half life intrigues me and confused me greatly. Which knowing Valve, they probably do on purpose and get great kicks out of it, and I don't blame them.

There are four variables that I think are most important here:
-The Gman
-The Combine
-Gordon Freeman
-The Vortigaunts

The Gman represents some higher body, an organization perhaps? He talks about investments and Gordon being in the right place at the right time. The Gman clearly knows the future (or possibly knows of the possibilities) because ***SPOILER*** he warns Eli of his Doom, which comes at a later time in Episode 2. ***END SPOILER***. So this leaves us with several clues as to who and what the Gman actually is? He is a part of a higher body, a 'species' that could very well transcend our 'logical' universe, he could be part of the creators of life as we know it. A species that perhaps marvels at the beauty of time and creation and created our universe simply as entertainment, studies, or whatever else they would choose to create a universe for (it helped me to imagine Earth as a droplet of water, and we are life swarming in that droplet, trying to expand, a complicated philosophical question). Whatever it is though, it represents a significant investment of the Gman, and it is clear he wants to see it run smoothly and possibly in his favor or in the favor of his species. So to make more sense of it (and no I am not a religious person), the Gman might represent an alien species that we would recognize as 'Gods', the creators of our universe we know of today. How else would he be able to walk freely throughout our universe, in our minds, warping time as we know it and seeing into the future?

IF the Gman is just that, there would have to be a reason for him choosing Gordon as his pawn. Why help, and not help Gordon out at times? An idea that came to me was that the combine (also being part of our universe) was a very powerful force that has created technologies that far surpasses what the the "Gmen" or "Creators" expected (teleports, possibly a doorway into the dimensions these 'creators or gmen' live in), in other words...The combine has grown out of control of their creators and now threaten them in some way, and the Gman has elected an unlikely hero to solve this issue.

Now where the story of Gordon Freeman is going to lead is hard to say, I imagine valve will make it very well done. Frankly, the Half-Life story can afford to be anything it wants, it's huge and has an underlying story and message that won't be revealed till the very end. There are two things happening, Gordon Freemans adventure to save the human species, and the Gman's story which remains very elusive.

There are some clues to support my theory:

"Worlds stretched thin across the membranes where the dimensions intersect...impossible to describe with our limited vocabulary."

I believe the combine know of these "Gmen" and are trying to destroy them, for they are the only 'body' that threatens them. Thus revealing Gordans importance. He's a pawn for the Gmen (The enemy of my enemy is my friend) and the Gmen possibly will use Gordon to destroy the combine, maybe?

"I am not one to squander my investments".

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qu7x7RfXpdk&feature=related

"the border world, Xen, is under our control for the time being."
"abide by certain...restrictions."

There's lots of clues that I think valve has left us, but we are really busy looking at the immediate story, not the underlying one. If we emphasize some of the words the Gman uses (which I believe to be very, very deliberate), then he gives us clues as to his purpose.
Some questions to ponder:

Restrictions? to what exactly? If you could imagine 'time' (as we know it) being a 'machine' (just an example) that was created by the Gmen, there would have to be restrictions to an ultimate plan, why create life if you're just going to control it?. If they can predict the future (which if they somehow understood 'chaos theory', and was able to solve it in a mathematical equation), then if you imagine 'time' (as we know it) being a timeline already written but re-writing itself constantly, the Gmen could very well have created a universe and be able to tell, roughly and exactly (at the same time) how events will unfold with different instances.

Some other things I think we should focus on in the half life universe. Stuff you might not have considered (maybe you have, if you're like me)...The name of the main character: Gordon Freeman. Maybe there is a message here that in the unveiling of things will become more apparent to us: Gordon says no words, could YOU (the person sitting in your chair, reading what I'm saying) possibly be the Freeman? Maybe that's something to take into consideration.

"And this one has proven to be a fine pawn, for those who control him." -Dr. Breen

-(Could what he says there possibly provide insight proving that the combine are aware of the Gmen's existence, and also highlighting his importance to the combine. 'The enemies weapon' so to speak.

Another is the name of the game itself 'Half-Life'. Yes the word has it's scientific definition, but perhaps we should look at it in a literal sense. Half-Life. Half-Alive. Possibly a reference to the human condition compared to the Gmen, who seem to be capable of things we cannot understand? Of course everything I'm saying may be far fetched, and is only speculation...but I believe I'm offering another way to look at this epic story (which is...epic, as I also believe the morals and underlying message of the story will be too).

"I have recommended your services to my employers, and they have authorized me to offer you a job, they agree with me that you have limitless potential."
He reveals that even HE has restrictions, so where ever he comes from (the Gman), there are rules too.

In episode one we learn about another portion of the half-life universe that I think needs more understanding: the vortigaunts.
These are the first creatures that are visibly able to physically interact with the Gman. It might be safe to assume they are from the same universe/dimension. Especially when ***SPOILER ALERT!!!*** Gman begins speaking with Gordon while the vortigaunts are distracted by alyx laying on the table dying (he even says "I realize this moment may not be the most convenient for a heart to heart, but I had to wait until your friends were otherwise occupied.)***END SPOILER***

Anyways...This is a theory to expand upon. Tell me what you think. I'll keep adding to it if I think of anything interesting.

Thanks for reading.

"Time, Dr. Freeman. Is it really that TIME again?"

Great theory. I don't think I've heard anything to similar to yours before.

...Gordans...

Careful, that's taboo on most half-life forums.

What a rather interesting theory.

Interesting theory.

The Gman clearly knows the future (or possibly knows of the possibilities)....

I would imagine that G-Man does not know the future, but either knows the possibilities or is very good at figuring them out. There was a discussion about this somewhat recently, but I don't think I'll be able to find it. (Something seemed to catch him off guard, so it's more likely that whatever it was, was a low-probability event. Sorry I don't remember in more detail.)

The Gman clearly knows the future (or possibly knows of the possibilities) because ***SPOILER*** he warns Eli of his Doom, which comes at a later time in Episode 2. ***END SPOILER***.

His "Prepare for unforeseen consequences" message may have had to do with the Borealis. Trying to manipulate Eli into destroying it, rather than prophesying anything.

Since he originally said that to Eli before the Resonance Cascade, Eli would probably not be inclined to mess with "unknown" technology again after hearing that phrase.

How else would he be able to walk freely throughout our universe, in our minds, warping time as we know it and seeing into the future?

He may just have abilities or technology at his disposal that we don't know of. Or it could be as you say.

Like I said, an interesting theory.

If you want to know how to use spoiler tags, see this thread (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=606215). Or you can do as you did--it was clear enough. :) (I only added them to your quote because my separating the text from the rest of the paragraph made it too easy to see.)
