was this necessary? and there's another thread about this in the fallout 3 subsection.
that being said, i can play fallout GOTY on steam just fine with windows 7, as can most other people. it's likely not an issue with windows 7, but your drivers

If you'd read correctly. He said "but your drivers", not "get newer drivers".
If you have an NVIDIA card, you're likely going to need to use older drivers to get Fallout to work properly. I am using 186.18. It's NVIDIA's fault, not Microsoft's, not Bethesda's, not Valve's.

I disagree I wrote a thread about this Aswell, and considering the computer i have theres no other explanation then "Nvidia Drivers" how ever i have read other post saying that Fallout 3 wasnt designed to be played on win 7.
though neither was starcraft and that works on windows server OS lol so my problem is ; I cant find drivers for my m15x because i think im supposed to get them alienwares version of the drivers, and not get them from nvidia.com,However i dont see my GT 240m's drivers on the alienware website.

If it plays on Vista it's likely to play exactly the same on 7. If not better.
The 186.18s are for Win 7 and they play PERFECTLY. Anything higher than that and it stutters like mad.
It's NVIDIA's fault and they are ignoring the buyers of their cards.
I for one will be switching to ATI on my next upgrade.

I did find the Problem with Win 7 and fixed it! you see some of those whom write programs do NOT stick to the posted format, they take shortcuts putting stuff where it don't belong,The end result is other programs CLADHING and causing problems elsewhere(FO3)and I can prove it,I have the LOG.
NERO which from my memory has been a major problem in this regard,Has been for years. It along with SPYBOT.....WILL HANG or CRASH FO3 on win 7.
So if you have those programs REMOVE them and FO3 will work fine with NVIDIA drivers,They were a problem back when FO3 came out as the drivers had not caught up with the game..

I have these same issues and I have a Fresh Install, Latest Drivers, only thing installed is Steam. So stop spamming posts with the same info isn't helping anyone besides gamers know not to use those programs and the horrible too. I agree with bad programing tho

It is NOT Nero, it has been stated on many sites that if you use a SecuROM fixed version then other programs will not clash with Fallout...
I have tried both the latest and the earlier ones. The older drivers are perfect for Fallout. Newer ones cause slowdowns (SLI dropping out to single card mode), and stuttering!

OK! I,ve Had a least 3 versions of NERO!
NERO don't like SPYBOT and WILL trash FO-3,I KNOW cause it happened to ME! I am telling it as it happened and showed Windows Errors that HAPPENED at the same time! So try running SPYBOT when NERO is running and see what happens! THIS did NOT happen with VISTA. I have Both versions VISTA and Win 7 64bit. I was playing FO3 in VISTA 64bit JUST fine with BOTH programs, when I moved to Win 7 all h***l broke loose, slowly first HANGup then Crash when NERO or SPYBOT were running,I removed them both and FO3 RAN FINE no problems at ALL.with the latest nvidia drivers without fault at ultra level
go figure! Works for me!As far as NERO is Version 9 downloaded I don,t think it has the security problem as it is NOT on a CD/DVD!

Well,Do what I did to troubleshoot it.Use the : Event viewer in Admin Tools
in the control panel click on custom/admin it shows the errors as they happen
or afterwards when you look(grin) MS is no help at all in this, even the errors don,t help much as they are aimed at tech,s mostly, think if we were able to read em,they would not be needed. Look for 1002 errors that do mention FO3 as : fallout 3.exe module in the text a 1000 gives a fault code,
so far I,ve found a 1992 was a HANG code as fo3 would hang within 40 sec after you got into the game,a 1000 would crash it at the start, one could reset(close)it, if you find either of these errors you prob have a flacky program that is messing up FO3,finding the program that is causing the problem, one is out on a limb you just have to work on it,I was lucky I got two popup error boxes that gave me the clue at the time, for me a lucky break! if you realy have to reinstall win 7 then steamI install STEAM on my GAME partition on my 1 tb drive for games and files this way it is easy to redo Steam ...just double click on Steam.exe in the steam folder.makes life a lot easier, you don,t have to wait hours for all the games you have to redownload! fun city! but I have 3 gbps download speed, still takes a while though(1 hr) I shudder to think how long if I went back to 500 meg(Argggg)
think back to when it worked and think of any NEW thing that you may have installed, restore is good for that as you can go back, depends on how you added stuff to the restore list..
hope you find it,Dennis:eek: PS never give up I,m doing this with failing eyesight, one calls maculer degeneration goes with the over 60,s crowd ,if I can do it I'll teach my guide dog If I end up with one to play(grin) NEVER lose hope, you CAN do it!

I have Win 7 64 bit home edition. I play with no problems. But I had big problems at start. Then I removed Asus gamer OSD and problems are gone.

OH yeah!
ASUS are a little slow with the programs,my board died becuse they had a thing in the manual that it did not support 128 meg chips!
MOST memory card makers do NOT display the version of chips they use so one cannot tell unless it croaks on power up,mine worked, when I got wise, went back to FRY's ,same chip different brand...they don't sell them the 256 meg kind (Corsair) got them from Amason,8 gig..I get my MB back this week!
