View Full Version : Is this FPS normal?

Alright so I got a new video card and decided to test it out. So I used the Crysis demo to benchmark it. I ran it at 1280x1024, High settings no AA x64 bit mode. The average FPS I got was 40-60, 40 being the lowest and 60 being the highest.

My system is:
Intel i5 650
Windows 7 x64 bit
XFX Ati HD Radeon 5770
23' monitor on 1600x900 native resolution.

Now the problem is I believe I should be getting much more FPS on this resolution, because I've seen people on Youtube and such running on a 1600x900 and higher resolution and getting the FPS I have or better. Does something seem odd here or is it just normal for my computer?

Depends on a lot (a LOT) of factors - your settings, other people's settings, resolutions, their graphics cards, etc.

Also the 5770 is a mid-range card (comparable to the GTX 260 or the 4870 1GB) and at high resolutions/settings it's unrealistic to expect 60fps playing Crysis. On top of that, Crysis is a game which inherently (and grossly) favors Nvidia GPU architecture, and thus is an inappropriate application imo for benchmarking Radeon GPU's.

Google'd a quick benchmark/review:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/graphics/2009/10/13/amd-ati-radeon-hd-5770-review/8

You can look up a few more to get a better feel for where the 5770 sits on the scale, and what you can expect from it.

Crysis is a crazy game. It has crap loads of eye candy that even a single top of the line modern single GPU would struggle to give it 100fps on average with high settings.

Last time I checked, GTX295 would only run 40-70fps on max settings without AA...in QUAD-SLI.

That's just how graphically intensive this game is.

I can run it on max with 2X AA and I get 30-50FPS with my 5870 :D
I saw a video where the guy had 1 5970 and he could run it on max with 8X AA and he got 50-60FPS.

The biggest problem isn't how intensive it is. It's just horribly, horribly optimized.

I run BC2 at max settings, 8x AA, 16xAF, DX11 at 60-90 FPS. yet, I run Crysis at high settings, no AA, 16x AF, DX10 and get about 30-35 FPS. Compare screenshots of the two games, and Crysis is NOT that much better.

According to those pictures, I notice alot of bloom effects in BC2. This makes up for the "not-so-nice" textures of BC2, of course, I'm just stating what I know. :)

The textures look fine to me - but you need to force 16x AF. CCC or NVIDIA CP AF/texture settings will also overwrite the game's settings. Of course, that's in DX11...so maybe the miniscule amount of tesselation helps.

try to make sure vsync is off

Vysnc is off, it's disabled by default on Crysis.

I guess all those people on Youtube and such probably overcloked their CPU or GPU. I guess I'll do the same, but I guess if I can at least run Crysis on high (with no AA :( ) then I have no problems running a majority of games

Well, even with a good GPU, Crysis still won't run overly well on a dual core processor. At that resolution, who knows, maybe the CPU is holding you back a bit :)

Does Crysis benefit from more than 2 cores?
If it does, your i5 650 might be holding you back, as it's a dual core with IGP.

I am pretty sure Crysis utilizes more than two cores. Read it somewhere, but if you google it you'll probably find it.

The engine itself isn't horribly optimised, but the configs that Crytek made are.

Try this out:
https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B9xRbpLA4BbhNDg5NzRhYTktYzg0MC00MThiLWIzN TUtNjIzNTdmNmJmNTBj&hl=en

Just drop it into the root Crysis directory. Apparently it's meant to run better than high while looking better than Very High. Not sure if that's true, but it's worth a try, I guess :)

prove it... show an engine that can do the same things better. bfbc2 isn't one.

No AA
at 1080p on high i get 45 avg FPS
at 1080p on very high I get 20-25 avg FPS

He is right you know. BC2 may not appear to be better looking at first glance and trust me, with the water affects that suck in BC2 it is believable that it doesn't look as good. The bloom lighting, amazing gun models, and crazy weather affects do make the game look amazing though. Definitely worth a try to compare the too.

Also, Crysis Warhead might be pretty badly optimized seeing that it says "Runs best on Dual Core" and I have a 3.4 ghz dual core and can't even run everything on high. When I check system requirements labs it says I pass on everything. It really isn't well optimized.

Sounds about right. I have a fairly similiar rig to yours and I get about 25-40 FPS, usually around 30 on Very High with 8xAA at a resolution of 1680x1050.

Sounds like you have a weak GPU, although System Requirements Lab said my 4850 was to weak to run the game on recommended, ran on high pretty well with a weaker Dual Core than you have.
