Well, atleast Valve has some spot of luck becouse they made Dr. Breen die in hl2 couse if they kept him alive till ep2. Valve would've had HUGE problems with ep.3 since Robert died.

Or Valve can modify and/or recycle sounds. (Like the L4D Infecteds are GLaDOS's Anger Core's voices, and GLaDOS has a totally modified voice)

It's very sad to hear that he's died, but you do realize that voice actors can sound just alike, if not close enough, to the original thing? And then you have sound editors work on this stuff too.
