How do I improve my standing with someone and become friends with them? In the first mount and blade I would just do alot of quest for someone but now they say that they only have small work for their men and suggest I go fight in a battle. Is there anything I'm missing because I don't ever know someone enough to do anything fun.

Based on my experience, when I joined in a few battles and sieges with the entire army (the one led by the Marshal), afterwards when I talk to them they will say "I will not forget how we took Castle X together". My relation with the Lord would then increase by 1. So I think joining in the battle in this manner counts.

I too got the same response about how the quests a Lord has are more fit for his men than someone like me.

But I did get the quest to train recruits for a Lord.

I think more quests will open up once you have higher renown, level and relation with the Lord. But yeah I think the only way to gain higher relation for you for now is to join them in battles.

Also try speaking to them at feasts.
Perhaps it is only a coincidence, but in my experience they were far more likely to have a quest for me when I met them at a feast.

Also, apparently if you know a noble lady well enough, she could be able to raise your relation to another lord (at least the dialogue options suggest this).

If a lord is being attack help them and their rep goes way up depending on how many of their troops are left vs the enemies. When you join a Faction you become a lord, because you are a lord delivering messages and killing outlaws is merc work and they will not give you those quests any more. Before you join a faction be a merc for awhile that way you can still get basic quests and you have an enemy to fight to give you rep to your factions lords.
