I bought BC2 todayon retail, but I'm angry that I may not be able to play with my friends on steam w/ it. Can I? Or will I just be playing alone on it from now on?

You can't join off the Steam friends list anyway.

:D
Steam is DRM and it doesn't prevent you from playing with friends in any way.

Just add them VIA Friends list in the BC2 menu, thats how you do it son, we (who bought it off of steam) can't join like we could with Counter-Strike

This.
The only advantage to owning on Steam is no DRM.
Along with a reinstallable digital copy of the game.
There is no integrated Steam friend list, and autopatching is done through the game itself.
Which honestly isn't worth it compared to all the disadvantages of Steam.

There is no disadvantages using Steam... if anything being able to have any game from any developer bound to 1 account is a huge advantage. Also no game that doesn't use the Steam Cloud won't have the option of following them through Steam friends.

I love not having to worry about patching my games; steam takes care of that.
A while ago i felt like playing CoD4 so i reinstalled it and spent like 2 hours downloading and applying patches; what a pain in the ♥♥♥!
I like having all my games in one place. There is no disadvantage to steam that i can think of...

There is no benefit of having this game on Steam over any other version. In fact you only receive the negatives of the Steam platform regarding this game including but not limited to; delayed patching, steam client patching (lol re-downloading games at random) and lets not forget the awesome having to log into steam message when you want to play in offline mode.
Steam is DRM and there is ZERO benefit of having the Steam version of this PC game. Patching is automatic, your game files don't magically invalidate themselves requiring game cache verification or re-download, and you can download BFBC2 for free as many times as you want via EA anyway.
oh yeah and all of that beta conflicting with retail business Steam users had to deal with for awhile. Steam's BFBC2 client download is twice the size of non steam versions as well.

wow how wrong you are, delayed patching only happened once because of DICE messing up the patch (the 2nd patch came out the same time as the retail one). steam patching that resulted in re-downloading games was because people used the BETA client of Steam, you take risks if you attempt to use the BETA client. Also who really needs to play in offline mode regardless if you have Steam or not? I'd say about 99% of online gamers have a always on internet connection so playing offline is pretty much void. None of the issues you mention have ever happened to me and I've been using Steam since 2003. Also BFBC2 isn't double the size on Steam, it's the same...
Quit trolling.

delayed patching is a hallmark of the Steam platform unless of course the game uses steamworks and thus requires Steam to patch altogether. Steam isn't that great and has plenty of flaws you can find all across these forums.
Steam is just another form of DRM with a friendlier face. Running 3rd party applications that cause other issues regarding games is lame and something which Steam constantly seems to do regarding a wide range of games.
Nice try though I'm not an idiot and I've been using Steam since 2004 with it's lauch. Don't be fooled by my forum join date ;)

Steam was launched in 2003, also if there is a patch delay on a 3rd party game then it has only been a day and it's never Steams fault. You should stop trying to preach how Steam is bad around the forums when you have no clue what you are talking about.

My Steam account has been "hijacked" 3 times.
A few of my friends have lost their Steam accounts due to various reasons. (not their fault)
One friend lost over $700 worth of games.
This seems like a big disadvantage.

Searching porn sites that have viruses built into the site code isn't Steams fault. If you want to search those sites make sure to just buy the games from the site because no digital downloader will save you from that. Also cdkeys can be stolen like that to so box sets usually aren't a way to fix that problem.

I can't see the point you're trying to make with this.

The point is you are blaming Steam for your friends stupidity. Also buying the box sets from the store won't help with keyloggers and such since the keylogger will just strip you of your cdkey and eventually they will get the message that their cdkey is in use or their cdkey was banned by whatever AC the game uses.

Yeah, my friends' Steam accounts got hijacked because of a keylogger from an infected porn site.
/argument
I remember the link floating around through Steam friends where all you had to do was click it once and your account would be hijacked.
Didn't even have to put in your username or password.
I guess you wouldn't blame Steam for that, either.

Your account being hijacked, the vast majority of time, is down to your own stupidity. No Steam Accounts are disabled without reason.
Stop spreading fudge.

While I generally agree with your stance that BC2 is probably better retail than steam, I have been using the platform since launch as well and have never seen any issues with delayed patching, let alone enough instances where it becomes a hallmark.
The only reason I see to use retail over the Steam version is if Steam goes down for any reason, you will not be able to play your game.
The auto patching issue as a reason to get the Steam version is moot since BC2 auto patches when you start the game up.
And for those of us on the minimum side of the specs, I noticed that having BC2 hooked into Steam actually give me a FPS decrease, which for me was another reason to go retail on this purchase.

Actually I totally agree with ZeroDarkHundred.
Steam is just an extra DRM. Why would you want an extra DRM is beyond me. I am using steam only for Valve games, and nothing more (I still did not bought any games that require steamworks and are non-valve, like Supcom2, MW2, etc).
Why would I want my games to be tied to a steam account. In BC2, you still need to log to EA account, so it's not like it's easier to manage accounts across games. You also have to worry about your steam account not being hacked.
The only reason I see why would anyone want to have a non-steamworks game tied to steam, is the ability to download it anywhere, but this point is kinda mute, since I don't think you will be taking your gaming monster rig with you when you go in, let's say, 2 weeks vacation once every 6 months. And vacation is vacation, not go waste some more time playing video games.
And even then, you can always torrent the disk image and download the client, IF you don't like EA. It's LEGAL since you already bought it, you have the cd-key or your EA account which has the CD-key tied now.
Not to mention all the games are tons cheaper vs steam, unless steam has a big sale (like 50%+). Bought my BC2 for 16$ FTW.

You guys are just naming some of the bad things that have happened with Steam, whether once or multiple times, putting them into one post and saying STEAM HAS ALL THESE PROBLEMS AND THEY HAPPEN ALL THE TIME. Which isn't true.
Owned Steam since 2006. The only issue I EVER had was with BC2. Not exaggerating either.

The Steam version does not have SecuRom, which is even worse than the Steam DRM

But it did had it. Maybe it's still on your computer if you installed the game before the patch.
Also, your not using add/remove programs when you uninstall a game?
Having 10 HDD failures to dry up your activation limits it's pretty rare. In my 8 years of using computers, i never had one, so...
I guess you know that by (properly) uninstalling your game, it will automatically de-authorize your copy. As long as you don't just shift+del your BC2 folder, which is a bad thing for more reasons than just not de-authorizing your copy.

you obviously don't know how SecuROM works... it's not a program that gets installed onto your computer, it's a DRM that works in conjunction with the game exe so when they removed it from the Steam version they had to change the exe meaning it wouldn't load anymore

You don't need to be connected to play games unless they are on the Steam Cloud which is only a handful of games that have singleplayer. If you are trying to play multiplayer then you obviously need to be online...
