Ok so decided to buy the game as the demo runs well and looks good.

However, every games server tracker i find shows alot of empty servers and not many people online. Is this game still played online alot?

I noticed the same thing. It seems you need to join community/combat groups/clans to play on a closed server, those are the ones that are still active (correct me if i'm wrong).

So far I am to busy messing with the great editor...learning the script language etc.

Make sure you don't got any filters enabled, they might be hiding servers. Keep in mind that many servers use mods and/or are password-enabled servers.

I usually play on the 6thsense server. It uses a bunch of mods and latest beta version of the Ace mod and has a mature/active community. Everybody is free to join but you got to follow a short joining procedure on the website (http://6thsense.eu/arma2_join) to get the password/mods and stuff.

i would suggest to try use 3rd party software (freeware) HLSW or Qtracker to fast view ARMA servers and player population ...
