Hi, i recently bought Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition off of steam and i cant get it work. I can get the game launcher to show up but once i press the "Play" button, the game crashes and i get Windows has stopped responding.

Ive spent quite few hours reading the forums, trying to figure out how to fix this problem and none of the fixes ive tried have worked. Either im doing them wrong or they just arent working.

Ive tried:

Reinstalling Oblivion
Verified cache files
Updated drivers
Setting the compatability to Oblivion and Oblivion_launcher to Windows XP SP2
Disabled desktop composition
Tried checking the privelege level to "run program as an administrator" but it wont let me click on it, so ive tried right clicking the file and "run as administrator"(if that will effect it the same way)

Basically im all out of ideas, ive emailed Bethesda but they didnt really give me any help other then changing my compatability, which i already tried and didnt work. Anyone able to help me out here?

Specs:
NVIDIA GeForce 9800M GTS 1GB
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 2.26/2.26
4GB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit

Note: I thought it was because of Windows 64bit but ive read from countless people that they had have this game running just fine off of Windows 64bit.

I wish I had more advice to give, but I install the most recent Direct X version if you haven't had any luck with anything else yet.

Hmm well when i change the compability to Windows XP the game doesnt crash but it also doesnt show up. I can see the process running when i open up task manager. Anyone know anything bout this?

Ok, i found the issue. Took me 3 days to realize it. It was my anti-virus, Spyware Doctor that was preventing Oblivion to start up. I disabled my services for my anti-virus and Oblivion just runs fine. Now i just gotta figure out if theres a way around that so i dont have to disable my anti-virus everytime i feel like Oblivion.

The way i figured it out:
Did a clean boot + Oblivion worked just fine afterward
Used process of elimination of starting services under the MSConfig services i disabled for cleanboot by typing Services in the run area.

Note: I also restarted steam after i started each service

If i find out how to use my anti-virus and play same time ill post again later. Hopefully this helps some people that were in same boat as me :)

You should be able to create an exception for Oblivion.exe in Spyware Doctor somewhere.
Most AV's & Firewalls have that function.
You'll probably have to do some digging through the menus to find it, though.
