View Full Version : Command and Conquer 4. What the devil?

This game is not worth £30.
It is not even worth the bandwidth it'll take you to download it.
It is appaling.
Every aspect that made the C&C series? Gone.
Every aspect that was fun/challenging? Gone.
The DRM is, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
The leveling system is, ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.
The people who developed this? I'm willing to bet they're ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, or wish they were.
The fact that all the units models look like they're made from lego just goes to show that the artists have no clue.
The gameplay mechanisms are just obscene.
TLDNR version.
do not buy this, it is a waste of time.

For those wishing to know more,
Its full of bugs which should have been worked out, but havent been due to appaling testing. Bugs like the game crashing when you try to run it with 2 screens.
The ai is rather bad, the graphics are not 'next gen' they're not even 'this gen' they're just bad.
The script for the movies (okay, lets face it, they were always cheesy, but hell, this is just silly).
The single player gameplay, on hard, isnt even remotely challenging.
The DRM REQUIRING you to be connected to the internet for single player mode is just obscene.
It is just, an entirely bad game which should never have been released.

I bought the game the first day it came out. I think I've played it a total of 2hrs since then. Not only is the draconian DRM horrible, the cutscenes terrible (ya, they were cheesy before, but they were awesome cheesy), and the entire C&C formula has been destroyed.
I really wish I had known about the beta before the game was released. That seems to have been the only "demo" that was available at the time. Had I played it, I never would have wasted my money on this POS. If only there was a way to return the purchase. Oh well, it's something that shall forever live in my Steam game's list, only to be shunned by all my other games.

*sigh* If you're being sarcastic, indicate as such.
As for the post count. You don't have to have a high post count on a forum to be able to determine if a game is crap or not. If you, you know, actually PLAY the game, you get a pretty good idea of how the game works, and if it's good or not. Contrary to popular belief, that's how video game reviews are conducted.

When the game sells like crap, EA will just blame piracy and won't face up to the fact that they ♥♥♥♥ed up the franchise.

The second i seen this was coming out i was excited about it, then i found out they completely changed how the game is played, i will never play this game.
Why did they wait until the last game of the series to completely change the gameplay?
Why couldn't they just make a new series with this ♥♥♥♥ty gameplay and not ruin one of the best rts games in history.
If the new red alert has this same gameplay then ea is going to have some major riots on thier hands, and will completely regret ♥♥♥♥ing with the best rts series ever made.
But on a related note, now i won't be able to find out how it all ends because i will not play this crap.
Don't worry, you're not missing out on much story. Not only is it bad, but it's (thankfully) short, and utterly uninformative. Nothing new on Cabal/Legion, he's not even mentioned. Though given that they virtually ignored anything that happened in Firestorm, it doesn't surprise me that they decided to do the same to Legion. The Scrin have appeared to have suffered the same fate. There's nothing new on what Kane is that you probably wouldn't have figured from C&C3 either. There's pretty well nothing in it, no revelations, no reveals, no nothing. Just a "Story's done guys. Thanks for your cash."
The multiplayer that the game is 'built around' is pretty woeful as well. One game mode and a handful of maps. Yep, previous C&C games had more variety in the multiplayer, and they weren't 'built around multiplayer.' It's not even a particularly enthralling game mode, it's nice sure, but I tired of it after a couple of games.
The gameplay concept itself isn't bad. It just doesn't fit properly as it is into C&C, which is exasperated by the poor story, and leaves plenty of room for improvement.

I haven't finished it, but this game looks like a shovelware disguised as a Triple-A game to me. Just about a year of developpement, less maps, less missions, less art assets, ♥♥♥♥ty background video. It's a shame that they released something like this.

The story wasn't key factor to this game anyway, its all about multiplayer. story was just to tie up Kane's ascension. the games great, shame people wont even try it. dosen't matter, over time you'll get the itch to play, and enjoy Using "Tactics" then just spamming 100 units to base Ram someone in 5 minutes.

Simple. A popular series will guarantee people will buy the next sequel, probably before a lot of the review sites get a review released.
Release no demo.
Anti-piracy to make sure that people will buy it on the first couple days since they cant get their pirated version yet. Yes it will be cracked, just not as soon.
Add a $10 to the price of a normal game. They wont sell as many copies since its garbage but the higher price will help cover that.
It will kill the sales of their next C&C game though. Oh wait, there won't be one.

Even though I do think C&C4 is a steaming pile of crap, I would have been willing to let this guy's opinions slide (after all, they are just opinions) until he said that the story was actually pretty good. I didn't buy the game, but I've watched all the cinematics on YouTube, and the story is as far from good as you can possibly get.

Again, until he says the story line is good, his points are valid. The game somewhat forces you to play nod.
Why? Else you have to spend half your time dealing with an annoying chirpy midget. I swear that character was specially made to annoy people.
As for the learning curve?
The learning curve is like the breasts on a breast cancer victim. Flat.
The only way the learning curve could be considered hard, would be if you're blind and had no arms or legs. Which would then raise questions about how exactly you'd installed it on the pc.
Bottom line is:
This game is not good; it is a waste of money
The 'DMR' is so aggressive in its existence that I'm currently contacting steam to see if they can remove it from my games list, even without a refund for the game. Its mere presence irks me.
The game is not worth £30
The single player aspect is gone. No more can you be a troll sitting in a dark room, avoiding people. You're forced to interact.
The storyline is stupid. At least the other ones were suitably silly. This one isn’t even suitably silly. It’s just silly.
The GDI protagonist is so irritating you'll want to mute your speakers or gouge out your eyes. This forces you to play nod.
The game play favours the grinders. A new person cannot compete against a person who has been playing for weeks (assuming that the newbie is of sufficient skill to) due to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ levelling system.
The game play is like dribbling on your keyboard. I made a program that randomly generated what button I should press (note, this was shown on my laptop while I waited on the pc, I'm not savvy enough with the programming to have it work on my pc) It built my force. I won. Skill needed? No.
I probably could have had more lasting fun, if I'd gone to Amsterdam and brought a £35 hooker, or 35 £1 hookers.
The graphics are like they've taken graphic designers and gone "You're fired". Then got an autistic child in to design block structures. What’s the significance of the autism? Well, the structures are colour coordinated.
If you happen to have 2 screens, you have to physically unplug one, or disable it, before the game will even load.
You might as well play this game on a 15" screen. Why? Apparently zooming out is bad, so you can’t do it.

No kidding. The FMV's in the past C&C games have been cheesy, but C&C4's FMV's are horrid! The acting, aside from Joe Kukan, is utter garbage!

Exactly. The past C&C games have always been a bit cheesy, but they at least told a good story through the cheese. They ignored so many of the unresolved plot points from previous games in C&C4.
For example, in C&C3, GDI had found that sonics were very effective against Tiberium, and had been using it to keep Tiberium in check. I get that the Liquid Tiberium Bomb spread Tiberium all over, but GDI already knew how to drive it back. The fact that it was taking over the earth doesn't seem to make much sense without a logical explanation for why that happened. They seem to leave out all the background stuff that happened in Kane's Wrath as well such as the awakening of Legion and the cyborg army.

Ok... I'm going to ignore your lack of linguistic skills for the time being.
As for your personal debate in to whether or not you should purchase C&C4. If this thread gives you ANY indication as to how fans are reacting to the game, avoid it like the plague!
Instead spend the money on a dictionary! ;) It'll come in handy in the future!

Short answer, you're an idiot.
I've been gaming for the best bit of 18 years now, and no, that does not mean I am 18 years old. I mean that I have been playing computer games for 18 years. From Prince of Persia, Commander Keen and Alex Kidd. In fact, I'm willing to bet I've played many, many more games than you, and have much, much, more basis for my scathing opinions on this game, as I've experience of good games, bad games, wtf games, and superb games.
This 'game' is scarcely a game, it has an objective that can be complete with a negligible thought process. It’s just a time waster, a £30 time waster.

I agree that the game was a big let down. I think the gaming style they used does, however, has potential. The biggest problem was more or less my fault for purchasing the game and expecting it to be like previous releases without doing any research into it beforehand.
I giggle when I see people talk about post count.
Prince of Persia was hot stuff back in '89 or '90 or whenever it was. At least I assume you're referring to the one I played on my old 386 33mhz (with a turbo button, dont you forget it!).

So... the dual-monitor crash on start is present in the full game, too? I remember having to actually disable my second monitor to play the beta was appalling enough...
Anyways, having played the beta, and having (extensively) played all the CnC games before that (and actually being something of a CnC fanboy), I can say that the franchise is quickly going south. Especially with the new "game-a-year" trend the megapublishers like EA and Ubi have been setting lately.
So no, definitely not worth 30 euros. And the full price? I feel sorry for guys who threw their money away.

I've always been interested in the C&C series but I haven't really played any of the games. I made this account just to ask why they didn't make a super-bundle for C&C day, since I would have bought that in a second.
But I didn't realize that C&C 4 has the new Ubisoft-style of DRM, which alone is a deal breaker. Add to that the poor reviews (hey, at least AC2 is a great game) and this is a total non-starter for me. Thanks you guys for your good points and for saving me from wasting some cash.
