View Full Version : Solo or Multiplayer?
Heyas,
Just bought Borderlands and been messing around solo and I was curious if there is any benefit playing Multiplayer?
Is there extra quests and what not if you play Multiplayer or will I experience all the game solo.
Thanks!

Playing with a group, you will get harder boss fights, and all around harder monsters. But if you work as a group, the experience you gain is great. You should get your single player character leveled a little and grab some good weapons before heading online though. It makes it a lot easier.
Either way though, I tend to switch back and forth. I farm in single player, and I go about the story in multiplayer mostly.
Hope this helped:cool:

As far as story, the game is exactly the same between single and multiplayer. Multiplayer increases the number of tougher variants of enemies and drops more loot from the named/boss enemies. Other than that, exactly the same.

Quote from the game's loading screen help texts: "The more players, the stronger monsters, the better loot" (not word by word). I found very good stuff playing single player mode too though - it may be not advisable to host a multiplayer game but stay alone ;)
Whenever I can I play with friends - it's the most fun! On random public servers players tend to play in a very egoistic manner and grab everything they can (that's what I experienced). So find some friends to play with and share the loot :)

I did single player first and found the game rather challenging at times
And then I had two friends join and we were playing through the game again and it became much, much easier. Whenever I had finished saying "the next mission is gonna be tough but fun" we had already beaten it.
Coop makes the game almost too easy although there is not really any substantial tactical cooperation (unlike l4d for example). You just play together and exchange loot.

Does the game auto adjust difficulty between 2 and 3 coop players?

yes, they get harder with better loot drops.

Not really, the player hosting the game determines the difficulty. If you have a lvl 4 player hosting, the enemies will be around that level, if a lvl 40 player joins, it has no effect, but there will be more enemies. It's not like lvl 4 and lvl 40 will create lvl 22 enemies. The game is targetted around the one hosting.
When on single player you encounter one badasssomething you will encounter two with two players. Bosses of course don't come twinning.

I'm guessing a Mic is pretty much required for online/coop? I can't imagine how tough it would be communicating without it, and it seems communication would be important. I have a mic, it's just my front ports won't work (Brand friggin new case too...) so it's a real pain hooking up the mic every time I wanna game online. I guess I'm answering my own question here aren't I...lol
Anyways a lot of good advice here, thanks! Rep to go around :)

Mic is helpful but the in game voice system leaves something to be desired. I usually just type in chat if it's not something complicated to write out.

You really don't do a lot of communication. It's not required.
I understand ♥♥♥♥ with the voice system, so we use the steam voice chat which works better.

Do both - you will get very different experiences.
I have a single player char that is further in the game than my MP one. I basically enjoy the experience, story and atmosphere with the SP and then the team work and madness of the MP.
MP is going to be frantic and rushed so you may miss the atmosphere you would in single player.
Hunter for the SP and Soldier for the MP atm. You only need to do the SP once (playthrough 1, 2 and dlcs), the rest can be all MP with the other chars.

I did the first run through as single player, the first DLC as single player with my second character, and probably also going to do Knoxx once single player. Doing Knoxx multi kinda jacked up my quests a little and I missed some other quest. Personally, I like to see/do everything and get the story once, so single player, and after that multi.

I tried to start out the game in multiplayer and found other people's impatience aggravating. If you don't mind this then go for it, but to me the maps are too big and too interesting to just rush through to the boss. Also the world boss fights are boring if you don't give them proper respect.
What I did was solo the game with my main character and make a second character for multiplayer, but only used her in areas/missions I had already cleared.
I never use my mic and can't usually hear what other people are saying. (One of the best things about this game is the sound, and I would just as soon turn off my monitor as turn down the sound effects & music.) I'm about 1/3 through the second playthrough and this hasn't caused me any problems. In my experience not a lot of people use their mics, but that could be partly because I'm in the habit of playing late at night.
As a word of advice, if you want to play with minimal lag, host the game yourself and put your time zone (GMT-5 or whatever) in your game description.

That just reminded me, if you start out on multiplayer, don't expect to get a decent gun from a crate without having to right for it. With my second character I started on multiplayer and when we went to go fight Nine-Toes, I actually went to shoot him, one person stayed in the back, and the other two ran right past him to take the guns from the crate...

My first char did his first playthrough in singleplayer, the second playthrough with some multiplayer mixed in.
My main problem with multiplayer is, that I get tons of quests I did not accept. You get the quests the others have/accept (not sure which one).
So my second char just did 2 playthroughs without any multiplayer and will do all the side quests now without any multiplayer.
And my first char is customized for multiplayer. Heal others, give others ammo etc...
And the behavior of others... it is as different as you can imagine.
Some come, do one quest with you, grab all the weapons and disconnect.
Some come and play some missions and give you good guns for your class.
Once I played ca. 5 hours with someone. He/she did not talk once. Neither in chat nor in voice. When we finished the main quest, he/she left the server.
That was not really funny.
But to kick someone for not talking would be crazy too.

My advice is to finish the game with one character before playing multiplayer. Other players tend to just rush rush rush through the content which kind of spoiled the game for me. Once I beat the end boss I didn't mind the fast pace of multiplayer and I enjoy it very much now.

uh, if you want to talk, play with friends. but this game is not left4dead or a team based shooter. it is pretty much kill everything, maybe pick up a buddy if they drop, and if you die run back to help kill whoever is left. in other words not much that happens in the game really matters.
