View Full Version : Playing as Bison, how to counter Ryu and Sagat?

Outside of the rarely-encountered Chun-Li, most of my issues have been with Ryu and Sagat players. Sagat players usually outlive me by about 10%-ish health left all rounds and I lose, and Ryu players seem to beat out everything I dish out and usually are safe at the end of pretty much every move in the right hands. Tiger Uppercut usually trades with even my EX Headstomp and lp.Shoryuken from Ryu beats out every headstomp attempt, sometimes following it up with a full ultra.

So... Any advice to getting by these two characters? I'm not too informed about who the best characters are in this game, although I found Balrog / Sagat / Ryu to be pretty beast.. Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

Don't use headstomp? That's a start. If they're not throwing a fireball, they have a serious punish window to tag you with something.

Poke. Light Scissor Kick. Poke. Get the knockdown. Cross them up into a tick throw or cr.LP, cr.LP > cr.LK xx Scissor Kick

This place here has a huge compilation of all the information you could possibly want. (http://www.shoryuken.com/forumdisplay.php?f=260)

Enjoy.

Enjoy.

Definitely going to check all of this out. I currently have a hard time closing distance between me and any Sagat players, and I don't really use Headstomp unless a fireball / Tiger Shot is coming, but I am guessing my reaction time is too slow because I end up having it get blocked anyway. I definitely need a lot of work on my Bison game to win more matches online. Going to register over there, lots of information, thanks! +rep

Also, were you playing tonight? For some reason your name seems pretty familiar.

Nope.

Feel free to add me though... so long as you don't mind fighting Dan. I'll be on sometime someday eventually.

The only time you should really be using headstmop (in any matchup) is as part of your corner pressure to stuff their attempts to jump out.

The only benefit EX headstomp provides is some invincibility on startup. This is good for wakeup escapes, but Devil's Reverse does that better anyway.

Focus-dash fireballs to close distance. If you're close enough to dash-in > throw, you can do this on reaction to pretty much any fireball character.

You can also slide under Sagat's high Tiger Shots, though this is pretty risky as the timing is tight.

Against Ryu you really really want to dance in and out of s.MK range. s.MK stuffs fireballs very handily, and keeps you outside his c.MK and c.RH range. Also puts you at a nice range to dash under any jump-ins.

Against Sagat, you just have to have a ton of patience and just run the Tiger Shot gauntlet. Limit your jumping, and don't throw out anything unsafe until you're up close, otherwise you'll eat a tiger knee or kara tiger uppercut. Once you're in just play footsies and set up a knockdown. Keep him in the corner at all costs. It's a tough matchup but as long as you don't eat random tiger uppercuts you'll be fine.

Also check out http://www.youtube.com/user/LordAborigineSF4 ... search for TUC and Kuma. And take notes. :)

Standing HK.

EX headstomp is great for antiair.

Like someone else said above, get them on the corner and beat them with superior footsies. Keep knocking them down, bait wakeups and punish them. And also, instead of headstomping fireballs, do devil's reverse and DON'T press P in the air. You'll land right on their face then immediately throw. This will help getting them on the corner and people who aren't used to fighting Bisons fall for that easily. Mix it up with actual stomps and other things so you'll keep them guessing.

When I have trouble with a particular matchup I find that its helpful to watch videos of tournament play.

Here's a really good bison vs ryu match, hopefully that will help.
